Title: A game for a railwayman's light relief
Post by: ngauger on March 12, 2014, 03:01:11 PM
My ever watchful colleague spotted this 'game' somewhere on t'internet, and I thought it looked an amusing challenge.  It reminded me of operating several trains at once on my own layout, if you get my drift!

It's an idea based around the continual provision of passenger services which link areas together.

Have a go, it's free, and is guaranteed to have the most logical minded among you feeling perplexed and overworked!

Have fun.

Looks like my kind of game but my PC won't support it. Something to do with needing a Shader model 2. Oh well, off to buy a new PC now which I should have done a long time ago anyway

You've got me addicted to another game now...  >:(

I know it's only an alpha, but the following things are bugging me:

a) 'upgrade line/train' - following the mouse instructions but doesn't seem to do anything.
b) 'upgrade station' - when I click on the station (having previously clicked on 'S' in the left hand menu), gets a 'no further lines available' error if you haven't got any free lines, or nothing happens if you have. In any case, has no discernable effect on the game.

Hints and tips.

i) when the line is built in a tunnel under the river, the trains go at half speed through the tunnel.
ii) because of the above, try not to have long tunnels under the river.
iii) because of the above, try not to have more than one tunnel per line.
iv) clicking on the clock in the top right corner pauses the game; click again and it starts again.
v) you start with three stations and three free lines, the clock appears at midnight on Monday. You get another station to connect to at midday on Tuesday. You get a further three or four more stations by midnight on Sunday, at midday each day that a station appears. In the first week, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday are all days that stations have appeared when I have been playing. Three or four more stations then appear during each of the following weeks.
vi) at midnight on Sunday, you get the option to choose one of two from the following options: another free line (to a maximum of five, apparently); the ability to upgrade a line/train (make it go faster/increase capacity); or upgrade a station (increase capacity).
vii) keep an eye on your stations - when the 'passengers' 'customers' start to jiggle about then they are getting tired of waiting. A grey circle appears and starts disappearing clockwise. Once it has completely disappeared then you've lost...

I've only ever got through to the fifth week so far (i.e. got both the extra free lines and both the upgrade capability) but not for long. My highest score (as registered by the 'customer count' icon in the bottom right corner) is 484.

Any more info and I'll update here...

UPDATE

A bit of RTFM later... apparently you have to drag the C or S icon to update the line/train or station respectively, not click and click as I had been doing.

Do you think it will take over from Candy Crush Saga on Facebook.

After selecting an update on Sunday, you have to mouse over to the left side to get the list of available updates and then drag the one you want onto the station or train to upgrade, then hold it there until the colour changes to match.

BTW, ngauger, do you realize that you have just caused a significant forum-wide slowdown in layout construction and other useful activity?

I had twigged that and is noted in my 'Update' line in my OP...

It's fortunate that it's such a small program, no noticeable effect on bandwidth :)
