We had a wonderful time throughout our trip good food and drink met some lovely friendly people. We hired a car for our trip round the South Island and also discovered why NZ train drivers have so much time for modelling but more of that later.
Cheers for now, I've got a lot to catch up with on here. David
Looks like a great trip.
Thanks for sharing with us.
:greatpicturessign:
Glad you and Rosemary had a good trip, David
Great pics! Thanks for sharing. Confirms my desire to visit NZ someday (amongst a long, growing list).
Sounds like you had a great time! All recharged now and system flushed with some nice beer. Not great beer, just nice beer.
Whenever I travel to Singapore, I bring along an old clunker of a caboose that I have had since the 1970s to show the toy stores I come across. Guess what? Some of them have trains that they've had put away for 20 or more years with prices to match! Buying an old Rivarossi or Con Cor locomotive was a real treat at 1980 prices.
Great you went to NZ! One of my favourite parts of the world!
If you drove around the South Island you'd be used to sharing a one lane bridge with an oncoming train, then.
Heading south from Christchurch we stopped overnight at Timaru, nice spot

And all while going through lovely scenery, on travelling days we aimed to set off at 9.30 with a coffee stop about 11.00 and lunch at 13.00 dumping the car in the evening so I could have a beer! at this stage the mainstays were Speights, Montieths Macs and Emmersons (a Dunedin treat that I had been told to look out for) plus whatever craft beers I could find.
That's all for now, :beers: David
Ah, bringing back memories now! Been on that railway - really excellent, and Dunedin station is magnificent. Didn't you go to the Cadbury's choccy factory?!
Speights is of course, brewed in Dunedin.... did you go to the brewery? Got that fresh spring coming out of the wall where townsfolk go and fill plastic bottles! Great stuff!
You sound like me... every where we go in a hire car (no matter what country), I always make sure we have a beddy byes location by 5pm and it's near a pub!
Great pics - keep 'em coming!
George
In Dunedin we missed out on a visit to Speights brewery to go to REVolution a celebration of 100 years of motorcycling which was very good, oldest bike was a 1902 Motosacoche! and we did cross a lot of one way bridges.
Next we visited the Otago peninsular

No pictures of Te Anau but we had a lovely wedding anniversary lunch in Kepplers restaurant next to our hotel were we sat looking into the kitchen while our meal was prepared, had a very good haircut and went to a bar attached to a cinema were you could sit in armchair sized seats with your drink and watch a helicopter ride over glacier country.
and then to Milford Sound

Fantastic pictures! Especially that one of the reflection! I think you have earned the right to be called a photographer, David!
Haven't been to Doubtful Sound, but have been to Milford Sound. Did you get eaten by sandflies?
Yeah... that Speights Alehouse chain do amazing feeds. Always one of our favourite pitstops.

Lovely pictures - thanks for posting
Love this thread! You are really bring back some great memories for me.
Interestingly, I've stayed in that very Queenstown hotel, mate! Very snazzy, too. Back in 1982, all the posh new bit wasn't there and we stayed in those little cabins you see in your balcony photo. I think it was called the A-Line back then. But the new part is heaps better!
Looking forward to Franz Josef!
George
Bealman mentioned the oneway bridges of which there were many, on the way to Franz Joseph we crossed this fella

737 metres with passing places!
Franz Joseph was our first and only major weather disappointment, drizzly with low cloud, we had intended a flight over the glacier and Mount Cook had to make do with a visit to the Kiwi sanctuary and a cinema show of what we would have seen, had some excellent food at Alice Mays and the town boasts a Monteiths & Speights alehouse so all was not lost.
On the road to Greymouth we stopped for coffee at an interesting little café which had a display of memorabilia (or junk depending on your point of view!)

On our travels I have never come across so many roadworks and resurfacing, some of the ripped up sections were not so good in a car so I felt extremely sorry for a group of cyclists that we passed. Nearing Greymouth we stopped at Shanty Town a collection of old buildings set out as a smalltown servicing a timber mill and goldfield, loved the Bush tram line

Well that's it for now the short run to Greymouth to follow, cheers David
Great pics! Keep 'em coming.
You do know you got a photo of the ghost, behind the bar of the Golden Nugget.
Excellent pictures, as usual, David. It's funny though, after a while you get totally used to those bridges, don't you. At least the Kiwis drive on the correct side of the road!
Yeah, that barmaid does look a bit spooky, and I love the dunny shot!
Sorry the weather at Franz Josef was unsuitable for flying. When we were there we took a helicopter to the top of the glacier. I won't post the pics here because I don't want to look like I'm attempting to hijack your excellent thread, but if you are interested you can have a look at them in the media section in 'Bealman's old photos and magazines'.
Eagerly waiting the next installment!
George

and so off to Wellington, cheers David
So nice! Have always wanted to go to NZ, watch some Cricket, some Rugby, hike the trail to Mordor, etc...and now ride the rails! I have a book that among other things talks about some of the great lines to ride, and the a NZ one is written about.
Great stuff! That's a lovely ferry trip from Picton. Looking forward to the Wellington chapter! My old schoolmate lives and works there. I left Geordieland and went to Aus, he left a year later and went to NZ.
A friend of mine hired a camper van, and toured NZ for a month or so, some years back. Made me very jealous with her photos, which she emailed back every day!
One day I hope to do the same.
And so to Wellington, our hotel was on oriental parade on the waterfront with hills behind it. our room was on the side on the 8th! floor and this was the view from our room!

We took a trip on a sightseeing bus, turned out to be a small 12 seater and we found out why when we wound our way up to the Mount Victoria viewpoint. On the way up we passed some lovely Victorian Villas built into the hillside many serviced by their own cable cars, anyway from the top

I was saved by a nice bar just round the corner that had their beers on tap, couple of pints of "Chomp" restored my equilibrium. Didn't realise at the time but we'd been walking past a great restaurant but more of that when we get to Napier. Cheers for now David
Great stuff! Thanks for posting. I went to NZ a couple of years back and visited many of the same places so it really brings back some good memories.
I'm hoping to head out there again in June to coincide with England v All Blacks (oh and my mum's 60th!).
Cheers, Mike
wonderful pics of the windy City. I want to go baCK - 1996 is a long time ago. Looks as if you may have stayed in the same hotel we did.
Depending on where you go in North Island, there is a model shop on a road parralel to the sea front in Napier. went there in 1996 and again in 2011 - I think it is now run by a niece of the original proprietor. Also do visit the Glenbrook Railway somewhere west of Pukekoe (SW of Auckland). Not drmatic but great fun. Our firend's dairy farm is nearby.
There is supposed to be another preserved line ip towards the Bay of Islands but it had suffered flooding in 2011 and was out of action .
Glad you did the Taieri Gorge. A bit like the Mallaig run but on a vastly bigger scale. We missed out on the Transalpine as the awful quake hit when we were still in north Island. so we rescheduled to take in Queenstown and Dunedin. Actually in Napier that day near enough 80 years after their quake.
Once again, great pics, David. Looks like typical Wellington weather, here's a 2008 shot:

At least you had a level walk to town - as you are aware, Wellington is a very hilly place, and my mate lives right up in the Gods!!!
Great thread, mate.
George
Thanks for the comments guys, we got back on the 25th Feb so I'm afraid its to late to take advantage of Portpatrick's tips, so now to Napier the Art Deco capital rebuilt after the 1931 earthquake. Loking at last nights weather map on the news I'm glad I'm not out there at the moment, hope that those of you that are, are all OK.

It was here with our motor lodge a little out of town that we asked our landlords advice on where to eat, he recommended "Thai Chef" a short walk away. The meal was superb I would highly recommend as well, this was the place whose restaurant we had walked past in Wellington, if only we had known! They also have outlets in Auckland, New Plymouth and Mangonui.
Next stop Taupo, cheers David
In our 2011 visit we must have photographed many of the same views and buildings. In 1996 the place was almost starting to look a bit seedy and down at the heel. however in 2011 a lot of restoration had been done. We and our friends stayed in a motel on the main front road - their eldest son was detailed to do the milking etc at the farm. Their youngest is Downes syndrome and lives in a community near Napier. I found it amazing to realise how much their quake in 1931 changed the landscape in the locality.
I get quite excited when I get an email saying "Walking Upside Down", as your pics are so clear and full of good subject matter, while holding a lot of memories for me.
Napier is one of the few places in NZ I haven't visited, so it'll be on the agenda for the next visit. All those Art Deco buildings look really cool.
Keep 'em coming, buddy!!

On the road to Taupo we stopped for coffee and saw this little beauty,

Throughout our trip we saw beautifully restored cars & m/cycles being put to good use including 2 lovely Velocette Venoms winding their way up an alpine pass.
and the Tui brewery at Mangatainoka (try saying that after a couple) really nice bar & tasting room with good food and their own cider (Rosemary's favourite), apparently the founder Henry Wagstaff stopped on the site to make a cuppa which tasted so good he decided the water could be put to better use (wise Man) and the famous tower

Fantastic photos, David. That flight you took looks great - will definitely be on the agenda for my next visit! I think I've been in that pub - is that the one one the lake front at Taupo that advertises all day breakfasts?

Coromandel! Can't wait.
You sure you're not a professional photographer, mate? Your pictures are very good! I really like the first one there where you have framed the subject with the ferns.
There are some good pubs in Rotorua - I'd forgotten about that police station one!
I'll be interested to hear how you found the drive up the Coromandel Peninsula... I thought it was scary.

As Bealman pointed out the road north was very interesting, unfortunately I didn't take any pics too busy watching what I was doing!

We took the "Scenic" ? 309 road to Coromandel town, it's actually a dirt road with bush along both sides so you see very little, we came back on the northern loop of highway 25 which is scenic. However we did stop at the Kauri grove, these magnificent trees were used for house and boat building and are quite rare.

A very nice small town, just outside we found the "Driving Creek Railway" that'll be in the next post,
cheers for now David
Great, great thread! Great advertisement for New Zealand
A bit of useless railway-related info' about Coromandel:
In the Nineteenth Century there was a tramway running from the wharf through the township (which at that time had two distinct sections 'Upper Town' and Lower Town'). Running along Wharf Road (from which point you took that photograph) the tramway was horse-drawn and while primarily used for goods transportation, it also ran an hourly passenger service, using a 4-wheeled carriage for the purpose.
This passenger service was designed to connect with the 'commuter' steamer service which at the time connected Auckland with the various gold mining settlements dotted at intervals down the Firth of Thames. While the township of Thames was the focus of these services, the steamers (known locally as 'Coaster's') also went as far south as Paeroa (pie-ro-ah) on the Waihou (Why-how) river.
Glad you enjoyed the experience.

I thought that pub was bit pricey, but that might just be me being picky.
Looking forward to the Driving Creek Railway!
Driving Creek Railway was built by Barry Brickell a NZ potter to transport clay and wood to his kiln, it took 26 years in stages to achieve what can be seen today, he did a lot of the work himself getting specialist help for bridges tunnels and major earth works. At one stage his bank manager pointed out that the idea of a loan is that the bank gets its money back! He suggested taking passengers to raise funds this was done and the money used to buy more rails! It was 3 years before the bank received a start on the repayments! He is also a conservationist and has planted a Kauri forest and set up a nature reserve for native species.

and there are a few more in Bealman's album. It's a great trip! The bloke who built it, Barry Brickell, must be getting on a bit by now. Do you know if he's still alive, David?
Hi George
Barry Brickell is very much alive, he was checking passengers onto trains when we were there and is a very fit 78 year old, you can check him out on Google.
Cheers David

The glass windows are on the outside of the lift shaft, aware of the light flashing past I turned to see terra firma rapidly disappearing looked down to find a glass floor showing the lift shaft, spent the rest of the ride staring at the wall. Arriving at the top walked into the main observation level shuffled round hugging the centre and got back in the lift while Rosemary explored further up, the lift stopped at the next floor down marked café & BAR so I got out and sank a few quick pints and feeling better took a few pics.

What looks like a vertical scratch in those 2 pics is actually the wire tether for the free-fall that you can do if you've really lost your marbles. above the observation deck you can see the 1.2 metre wide "Sky walk" if you fancy a little fresh air!

We had a wonderful time in New Zealand, met some very friendly people drank some wine (all locally produced and exceptionally good) and would go back at the drop of a hat, we did a lot but missed a lot as well, fingers crossed we might get back! So now it's the journey home via Las Vegas. cheers for now David

Glad that you enjoyed our fair city, and that you got to see Mainline's depot at Parnell. It's a very interesting place.
The 'Garratt is unique in NZ - our last ones were the infamous 4-6-2+ 2-6-4 'G' class Gresley compounds, of the late 1920's, locomotives best described as 'Over powered, over-useless, and too technologically advanced' for the local scene. Designed by someone who thought he could out-do Beyer-Peacock, they were abominations. However, as a positive, we did get our amazing K-class 4-8-4's.
As I am sure you were told, Mainline's is the only one in NZ (how it got here is a story in itself), and it will eventually run; once a 'slight' problem with the loading gauge is sorted out... We look forward to it.
BTW: FWIW, I have a personal involvement with J 121, going back to events that occurred after she was withdrawn from service in 1971 (which I won't detail here). Let's just say that she has had quite a history. . .
The NZ railfan community owes a very large debt of gratitude to Ian Welch, who was able to save the loco's you saw (and, subsequently, others) from the scrappers...
Did you get to go for a trip on the 'Daldy?
Hope that your trip home was enjoyable; and that you will enjoy your 'endless summer'as a result. Being in two hemisphere's can have its advantages can't it?
Hi Komata
Thanks for adding that info on Parnell depot, I would like to have spent more time there. Unfortunately a trip on the Daldy was another victim of the time we had in Auckland. On the upside I have a list of things to do in both South and North islands if we can wangle another trip out there and we enjoyed the trip home via Las Vegas but more of that later. Getting back to UK traffic also came as a bit of a shock!! :o
Cheers David
David
Re: 'Getting back to UK traffic also came as a bit of a shock'
Ah, yes, you mean to a place where road rules are actually observed, and turning indicators are used around roundabouts...? :)
Yes, that must have been something of a shock; some locals have 'interesting' interpretations of the road rules, especially in the rural areas...
Glad the 'Parnell' information was of use.; shame about the 'Daldy. Perhaps next time.
I still like that one lane bridge south of Greymouth when you can be driving along on it and a huge loco hauling the Tranz Alpine steps onto the other end of it!
Driving in the UK is easy, after that, I reckon! ;D
Las Vegas is fantasy land, we stayed in the Venetian and parts of it were pretty authentic, 2 shots at night

Great shots, but I'm not sure I like the look of that fuel gauge!!
Great photos!
Superb photos - just looked through all of them. The thread caught my eye as I'm off to Oz in 2 months time - I'll do my own thread of pics when I get back!
Bealman didn't like the look of the fuel gauge in the copter, that was just before we stopped to refuel, apparently they use 55-60 gallons an hour! no wonder the flight was expensive.
Back in Las Vegas we took another trip to downtown, the original “strip” area, when we went to the “Mob” museum Rosemary had spotted at the top of the road the Main Street brewery so had to go have a look. First a pic of the area taken from the helicopter on the way back from the canyon.

You can just see this part of the building in the aerial shot poking out to the right of the line of tall buildings where the highway curves left.
Anyway on to the exciting bits, where the action takes place!

Oh yes!!! Saved us all many tourist dollars..............and reminded me that I haven't seen all of my own country yet (NZ). Great to see your reactions to places - never seen so many pubs! :D :beers:

Cheers, David. This has been one of my favourite threads of late. You'll be getting on with your layout now, then? Oh, did you bring anything railwayeee back? On my trips I always bring at least one thing back for my layout, no matter how small.
Again, thanks for an entertaining and informative travelogue!! :beers:
