Sorry to say but I'm almost at the end of my tether with my luck/this hobby.
Whist away I purchased 3 loco's, all 3 need to be returned :veryangry:
Farish Jinty - great runner but has been assembled by a 3 year old and machined using a chisel
Farish 66 'new tool DCC' Freightliner - has chewed it's top gear after 30 mins of running
Farish Class 20 Green 'like new' from Hattons - clearly been hand painted in places to cover marks
Talk about returning from holiday with a bump!
Pretty fed up now. Check the classifieds later, might be a collection up for grabs.....
Good luck. I've managed to acquire a few albatrosses myself. Most annoying.
Two of them became static portions of my layout on a siding track next to an engine repair shed. Even glued them to the rails so I could lift up the section and get to the wiring. Hated to waste the motive power but they were useless for anything else.

You probably know this, but just in case - Farish 66s generally chew the top gear if you run them upside down. I went through a few myself before realising (cleaning wheels).

I didn't know that, so thanks, I'll bear it in mind for the future.
However, it was only run UK style as opposed to AUS!
Whilst I have settled a little, I'm questioning my enjoyment of the hobby as today has put me off a fair bit!
It might be because you lifted one end slightly whist it was running. Basically they need weight on the bogies for the gear to mesh properly. Since I knew about this I haven't lost one!!!

Just been watching my class 60 hauling 29 SPA's around and I'm a little bit happier.
Jon - thanks for another tip, luckily I was taught from a young age not to touch a loco whilst moving so I must rule this out too.
All 3 loco's are being returned. I'll put it down to my luck, again!

A lot of people clean the wheels by running the loco upside down in a cradle and applying something like this

If I were you I'd return all three and then take a breather for a while. I'm sure you wouldn't want to quit the hobby, just on a bit of a downer.
They say things come in threes, so another way of looking at it is you have got some bad luck over with in one go! Now you can look forward to trouble free purchases for a while. ;)
I do empathise though. In 2012 more than half my loco purchases ended up going back for repair/replacement. The better news is everything bought in the past year have all been fine (touch wood and all that!).

Sorry to hear about these loco problems.
I'm surprised that some new locos chew up gears if you apply power to them when inverted :worried:
For many years, whenever I've been fault finding, I've turned them upside down in a cradle and applied power to the wheels and/or motor.
Looks like it's now a :no: :no: with some of today's production.
I only know it to be the case with Farish 66s........unless anyone knows differently?
Bit of a shame as they are by far the most represented in my "fleet"!

They are lovely beasts, I was really lucky to get my two EWS ones's new despite them being sold out everywhere.
I'll certainly be treating them with extra extra care now.

I assume by Colin you mean Colin Heard of Union Mills Models?
There is no doubt that while basic they have a solid reputation for robustness, good running and haulage. I must have about ten and of them only a J39 from about 1997 is showing signs of it's age.
I would have to agree one of his locos could well be a good choice to break the unlucky spell - how about the J11 for a good all-rounder?

My experience with the Farish 66's is that they suffer from split gears, and some of them chew gears over time anyway. Best place for them (apart from possible rectal use in whoever is responsible for the fact Bachmann haven't fixed the gears) is in the shop. The later Dapol ones are much better all round. The early Dapol ones are however fairly bad!
If you want a loco that just works then Union Mills is the thing at least for steam. Diesel is a bit harder unless you buy CJM. If a CJM loco fails I imagine Chris will personally show up at your door to apologize ;)

I'm pleased to say I'm in a much happier place today.
Two new 66's have survived the run-in, the class 20 has gone back to hattons and the Jinty has been put on ice.
I've got 4 66's now, the EWS ones are both on the newer chassis' as I rebuilt 66200 onto a new chassis. I also aquired a couple of duds for parts. My spares box resembles Toton!
