Thought I'd put this here rather than in n gauge discussion as this applies to all forms of railway modelling.
Thought I'd start a place where people can confess to setting out with good intentions of doing work on their layouts and just end up playing trains :-[
I'll go first, had all good intentions of making a start building my metcalfe platforms, measured a bit up and started sticking the walls together then thought I know I'll give my new HST a run as I didn't properly run it in last weekend!
Now have a layout full of stock and a twelve coach HST running and not a platform in sight :angel:
Happens a lot but as I'm currently installing point motors, all my locos and stock are stowed away so I have no excuse !

Just ordered a farish london midland, nearly £60 off at hattons so that will be excuse to play :claphappy:
Never mind 'guilty as charged' - I'm doing serious porridge for not cracking on but playing trains :-[ I keep convincing myself I need to do more research in all things electrical etc etc :D
I believe I have made prevarication an art form :laugh:
Mind you, it's not helped by members selling me locos that I just have to play trains test, of course ::) :angel:

Don't forget that once you have done the platforms, you'll need to give the trains a good test to make sure they don't scrape the platforms... ;)
Testing is just so much more fun. :D
After a hard couple of hours modelling we deserve a reward, don't we? :P :P

Get a good couple of years testing if your building platforms like Reading...
I'm terrible, started a thread on here months ago about building, or trying to design, my layout, got distracted by building my Royal Train, got plans now for my NMT, and still I've got just an oval of track and no layout to do 'testing' on... ;)

You have to play trains while still in the throes of building because they seize up if you don't do it - don't they? The track gets a micro coating of dust - and the engine drivers become bolshy with all the inactive time on their hands. The points petrify, and controller transformers become brittle.
I'm sure I've read somewhere that this is all true.!!!
I thought the testing/playing session was compulsary.
You do a bit of work on the layout and then have to run trains to make sure the clearances are still there. Also means you can check nothing like adhesives have accidently coated the rails, before you can't get back to that inacessible piece of track toclean it off.

... but after ballasting it might be good to run a loco pushing a Tomix Track Cleaning Machine to vac up all the loose ballast and to make sure that nothing derails due to unseen ballast stuck to rails. Of course you have to make sure that all the rolling stock doesn't derail anywhere.
With all this track testing, how do I find time to play? :( :laugh:

Ever since I decided to relay the track formation I get to a certain point (pun intended) and the work stops!
I am hoping that in about 2 months time (If I retain my sanity) I can actually make something move under its own steam! (so to speak)
I envy you fellows who can indulge your fantasies. (With your modelling that is!)

Is it not possible to apply some temporary power supply to what you have laid Peter, just to make sure that that part works? A couple of crocodile clips attached to wires attached to your controller is how I've done it in the past.
