We have had what is your favourite British Steam loco and Diesel loco threads but what about non British.
There are quite a few International modellers on the forum so it would be interesting to hear what their favourites are.
My favourite Steam Loco is the American Norfolk and Western J Class Express Passenger loco.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/N%26W_J_class_%281941%29
Favourite Diesel is the EMD F7 used by many American Railroads, I think this loco typifies what is good about American diesel power.

Steam, Southern Pacific GS4. Diesel. Union Pacific DDA40X Centennial.
Great choice Poliss, both legendary locomotives.

Steam's tricky; most of those operating overseas I like were either built in the UK or were developments thereof. Diesels is easier: SNCF 'Panoramique' railcar and (because it was my first Tri-ang diesel model) the VR Class B (in blue and yellow, of course).
Not a huge fan of US trains, but I do like the Morning Daylight GS-4 4-8-4. At the other end of the scale, I am also rather fond of Shays.
For diesel and electric, we go (obviously for me) to Japan. Diesel is a tie between the DD51 and the extremely impressive DF200, and electric is between the articulated EH200 and the stylish EF66

You are a true Aussie Kev, as an ex Victorian trainspotter I saw all of those old beauties in B and A classification.
The old Spirit is a mighty loco alright but my personal preference was the non streamline version.
Portuguese class 1400 and 1800, both English Electric designs, would be on my list.
Not foreign enough?
In that case, probably whichever one produces the most clag/noise.
being such a British modeller I must admit i do like gp38s in both chessie system and bnsf railroad colours
daz
Posssibly the Kenyan Railwayus class 62 - built by a designer who clearly hated curved surfaces, they are positively cubist and functional
Can we include electric...I'd have to go for the DB Class 103
Hmmm... obvious choice for me! ;D
For :A1Tornado: it would have to be http://www.rpsi-online.org/locomotives/loco186.htm (http://www.rpsi-online.org/locomotives/loco186.htm)
They were real workhorse's and thankfully 2 survive!
For :Class37: it would have to be http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CIE_201_Class (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CIE_201_Class)
My favourite out of the few diesels I like from anywhere!
Don't really have an electric one...

The S before the streamlining is a nice looking loco I agree. For mine the R nudges it out (but could be considered a British loco owing to being built in Scotland!) on the "normal look". Dad remembers travelling behind the S up to Albury and reckons with a light train it had the potential to nudge Mallard but didn't have the track to do it on. I have never read of the them doing the ton but Dad reckons it was done.
This is my favorite:

My favorites are ATSF GP60M's like these.

This is a tough one given we have the rest of the world to choose from.
and being a primarily brit forum, I'm nervous is saying my favourite steam train is French :)
I give you the U1 :)

closely followed I confess by someting from across the pond
the PRR s-1 (closely followed by the t-1 and the NYC J3a)
As for diesels, thats tougher, not US stuff (though I do have a softspot for Alco Bigs (c636s etc)
I'm going to have to go with the DB V200 (and yes I also like warships)
We also have to include electrics (which is so hard given the choices) but I'll opt for the croc
(http://www-personal.umich.edu/~khmiska/_derived/SBB%20Cr8.jpg)
I'm not going to get started on multiple units :)
