Hi All,
I thought it might be nice to post up photos of where our layouts live? Zoomed out perhaps, showing the surroundings, workbench etc.
Here is mine. My layout lives on the shelf in my study. Above is my stock, below is my test bench and work area.
(http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/gallery/51/thumb_9706.jpg) (http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=9706)
Would love to see what yours looks like.
Thanks,
Gavin.
My main layout is in one of the loft rooms. It's a bit of a mess in there..... :-X

... one of the loft rooms.
Oh ... how many loft rooms do you have?
Great looking space though - very jealous.
There is a little landing about a metre square, and then another room - not as big as this one though. I made sure I had the bigger one. ;) :D
Hey, you can fit a lot of N gauge in a metre square. :D
under my bed . you should see peoples faces when they say , wheres the train i can hear? :D
Hi
My layout sits on top of the side board in the lounge, main 2 problems my 2 cats use the side board as a short cut from a to b.
Mike
When not in use my layout leans up against the wall in my living room. When it was just a bare board it could slide behind the sofa but I'm not sure that would work anymore.
My layout-to-be lives in the spare room, but it's currently covered in aeroplanes, a dolls house for the housing authority, Star Trek vessels and helicopters. Really gotta put some shelves up to move all those.
Cheers, Timmo
Mine is hinged on the wall in the dining room, waiting for the lad to move out so i can use the small bedroom.
Mine's packed away at the moment so it looks like a 6'x3'x2' wardrobe in the dining room, covered with a blanket to keep the dust off ;)
No pics unfortunately as haven't taken any since moving house :(
Paul
mine lives in the conservatory when the weathers better, at the moment its behind the book case away from the cold and damp
When I started with my layout the only space I had available was the area of my woodturning workshop that was my showroom.
If you imagine that the area immediately behind the door and the same width as the the door and the building to the Right allows me approximately 1.5 metres square.
It is far from ideal but beggars cannot be choosers!

Regards, Peter.
Like cjdodd, mine lives in the conservatory (aka mancave)
Mine lives under my son's bed. With the layout being only 3ft x 2ft it fits nicely! When in use it moves to the dining room table.
Any future layouts can't be any bigger than 3ft x 6ft...i.e no bigger than the bed.
That said...there is a long term plan to clear out the cellar which is around 35ft x 18ft...just imagine how much N Gauge you could fit in there!

That's some very solid-looking soil in your garden, Peter. I don't envy you the job of digging it over!
My layout 'lives' in the metaphorical womb at the moment, but it's getting close to its due date.
Peter
My layout 'Black sheep lane' is sited on on old computer table in the corner of the back bedroom. Good thing about using old furniture is that if you spill some glue, paint or slip with the drill - no problem ! The layout stood up on the left is my Z scale layout 'Earlstone Creak', it's a work in progress (very little progress at that !)... ::)
The shelves are for display at the moment, but i'm sure you can guess what the long term plan is.... ;) Just in case you're wondering what's on the shelf - HO scale at the rear, N gauge at the front and Z scale on the right.

I should have added that the picture was taken in 2007 when my workshop was newly constructed!
I have dug over the ground extensively since then and it looks totally different! Another reason for a Rotavator!
Peter.
Mine runs round the walls of my home office, it's built into the Ikea shelving/cupboards so that the space below it can hold all the other crap.
Alan
I have to stack mine (Fisherlea) vertically when not in use in my spare "box room" where I store stuff and as space is limited there I have to carry it into my living room whenever I want to run trains.
Due to its size and wanting to carry it safely solo most of the time, I can't have too much raised scenery or detail as that could be damaged when I move it back and forth.
My layouts live in a 13ft x 5ft shed, ex-aviary.

Alex
I'm lucky enough to have a decent space in my garage. When we were renovating our house in rural Pennsylvania about 7 years ago, we included an alcove space for 'storage'. My late father commented that it would make a good place for a model railway... Now the layout is in the alcove and the fiddle yard goes along the side of the garage.

Note the snow outside and the skis on the wall - the one downside with using a garage is the temperature variation :cold:
Mine's 6x3 and lives above a single bed in the spare bedroom. Has to move under the bed when guests stay.
I'm also lucky enough to have a garage to use, it was converted to a railway room in the summer. At the moment it's a woodwork building site for boards.

My mancave, a bit of a tip at the moment needs a bit of attention
I have a nice 10x8 manshed to the side of the house. Even that seems cramped, even in N!
I seem to have forgot the pic, thats the second time tonight....thats worrying(http://i1293.photobucket.com/albums/b597/lilchris261/DSCF4679640x480_zps42d81770.jpg) (http://s1293.photobucket.com/user/lilchris261/media/DSCF4679640x480_zps42d81770.jpg.html)
Some really interesting and varied replies. By comparison my layout location is very conventional - on a permanently installed purpose built baseboard with legs in the fourth bedroom. Very boring - carpeted, properly lit, and with central heating and coffee on demand!
It depends:
My 'Main' 'conventional-type) layout (The Tekereru Branch) which is a fold-away unit designed by SWMBO, inhabits a cabinet in our lounge, where it masquerades as a scenic divider, while the Kaisers's Reef (Hauraki) Gold Mining (N.L), an micro-layout inhabits the top of the china cabinet, and Te Kereru Mining and Investment Co. Ltd. (another small portable) lurks in a spare room...
There are also several other 'Tea Tray-sized' micro layouts scattered around in random places, 'awaiting further attention....' (aka 'Some day my Prince will come...')
As I said, it depends; thanks for asking.
i have a 4.5mtr by 3.6mtr fully lined and insulated train room built inside my garage. Its nice and dry and never hot as above it is the mezzanine level i use for storage; even in our hot summers. i put a good size window in one wall so im not "boxed in" plus i get to lokk out over my fire engine, yes i still have one left!
BArt
Kanjiyama lives in our shed, of which I have a 50% stake! Normally it is set up, but currently it is dismantled awaiting some minor spurring up. It is due out to play next month! :D
Under the bed.
Had I been able to pursuade Mrs TC to have a king-sized bed; I could have had a few more sidings.
Birds! Can't live with 'em; Can't shoot 'em.
Hi all,
I've really enjoyed reading all the responses and seeing the pictures.
I'm surprised how popular the 'under bed' option is. :)
I'm also entertained by how SWMBO, Mrs TC, Birds and the Better-Half seem to play an important role in the decision making process.
Cheers all. Keep them pictures coming.
Gavin.
My layout lives under the bed, propped against the wardrobe, on the bed.....anywhere it can get really....great to see the pics & hear the stories though, keep em coming:)

Fordpop - Great name!
As an avid reader of 'Custom Car' in the 70's, I have to ask; Jag IRS, Viva HA front suspension, Rover V8??
In the loft.
I installed a 'Velux' style window some years back, and the insulation material was upgraded recently when we had the roof re-laid. The window overlooks the midland mainline from whence I draw my inspiration! What could be better eh?
Andy
A pic of the layout in my conservatory (aka mancave) taken through the French windows in my bedroom. When I can't sleep at night I just roll out of bed and go play trains :D

Is the signalman aware that there's been a controllerslip onto the line? It could take days to move that lot. ;)
Mine is currently residing on the living room table!

Just getting it ready for the NGF meet up on 15/2/14. It has lived on it's end by my workbench in the back-ground, but should really reside in the loft in the interests of marital harmony.

First attempt at putting in a pic to a post, so here goes...
When I retired my wife quoted Nora Batty at me "Every man should have a shed"- so I have a 16 foot by 10 foot garden workshop, insulated, fitted with a rudimentary secondary double-glazing, and with its own consumer unit. This is where there should be a picture- did it work?
(http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/gallery/51/thumb_9751.jpg) (http://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=gallery;sa=view;id=9751)
Answer- yes.....
All the very best

Very handsome shed there, Les
You can always check to see if the 'pic in the post' has worked by pressing the 'preview' button as opposed to the 'post' button

showing inside of the shed in its first winter with Furtwangen Ost being built by me at the far end and Gresby by Mr Simon taking much of the space. Gresby is now under the workbench waiting Mr Simon to decide what to do with it now he's 120 miles down the road, FO is on one end of the workbench being prepared for Sileby show in 3 weeks time, and Hawthorn Dene is standing where Gresby is- having scenics done for first outing at Grantham Railshow in September...
All the very best
