Just thought you'd like to see the sky over my place this morning:

'mackerel sky'

It's supposed to be a sign of better weather

Thanks EP & PP.

We called it a mackerel sky as well.

Not seen it for ages and can't remember where or when.

Fantastic pictures Dave and an interesting link from Port Perron. Mackerel sky is a new one for me

Whilst in Colorado over New Year a friend of mine pointed out 3 flying saucer clouds hanging over Mount Baldy near Breckenridge. I was driving, so couldn't take a picture, but that makes two new cloud types for me in a week!

Here is a link to a pic of the flying saucer cloud or lenticularis (thanks to Port Perran,s link)

That would make a nice change.

That's a great shot. I often take cloud pix  but to get the best you have to carry your camera about for best results rather than use a camera phone. Have thought of joining the Cloud Appreciation Society, might do it one of these days! I always thought a mackerel sky was a sign of bad weather but may be wrong. Don't want to be  Michael Fish mk2. Oh dear Mr Fish and mackerel sky!

By the way St John's Wood is the only London tube station which doesn't contain any of the letters in the word mackerel....so I believe.

I didn't think that anyone would be interested but I too took a photograph yesterday morning at 7.30 am out of my bathroom window.

This was my result:-

My dad emailed me with this, he took it at 7:45 yesterday in Bognor

I was taking this at 8:15 or so in Manchester 260 miles away

There have been some lovely sunrises and sunsets this year - I'm lucky to usually have a camera handy!
