Great news Pengi, thanks for posting, more recording to do. :) I've got series 1 to 4 and the 2 series of Great Continental on my hard drive as permanent downloads and was just about to burn the lot to DVD's but will now have to wait until I have series 5 available.
Thanks Pengi,
The Lancashire bits will hopefully be most interesting
Lets hope he delves right into L & Y railway.

That's a bit of a misnomer where Mr. Portillo is concerned. I did wonder whether he was colour-blind or his wife picked his outfits for him for a joke until I read in a newspaper interview that he picked all his clothing himself!
We have been watching series 1 over the christmas period as the TV was not up to scratch, and I just do not know what makes these programs superb whether its Mr Portilo or the producer and the all team that made the series, but it made us go out and buy all the DVD,s, all I can say is we will collect all the DVD,s because thats what keeps making them record more series, so they will get our cash all the time, well worth it and a joy to watch over and over, bring on series 6 and any more series they make.
I would just hope they would bring out more programs about the big 4 and how they were managed, well maybe I am asking for to much.

Sorry, Geoff, but I just can't imagine they'll drill down to such detail as the programme is as much a travelogue rather than any examination of the railway's workings, and there are plenty of specialist DVD's around for railway buffs/purists.
Sky box set to record the series.
I well made program and great to relax to - especially if you have multiple episodes backed up!

Remember that Mr P is half Spanish. He's clearly inherited a more Mediterranean sense of colour, bless him.
I have to say I find the railway journals a complete delight to watch and I used to talk about it with my late father. For all their foibles -I find them a genuine delight and I'm not so sure of him in other respects but long live the Bradshaw book he carries (although it never gets weathered or dog-eared LoL). Portillo is very watchable and a good presenter, I think this is a brilliant series and long may it last. One of the few BBC programmes I am happy to see my hard earned cash go toward.
These are the upcoming episodes
Today: Bletchley to Newport Pagnall
Wed : Northampton to Nuneaton
Thurs: Leicester to Loughborough
Fri : Nottingham to Leeds
w/c 20th
Mon: Southampton to Basingstoke
Tue: Winchfield to Crowthorne (inc Portillo at Aldershot army camp)
Wed: Wokingham to Bradford upon Avon
Thurs: Chippenham to Gloucester
Fri: Cheltenham to Wolverhampton
It's a great series. Utterly watchable (and I'm not a great television watcher).
Looking forward to the next few episodes.
I'll be following this weeks progs with interest as it was my old stomping ground.
Thanks, Pengi :thankyousign:
Dunno how he'll get to Newport Pagnall as there is no track as far as I know.
Who knows - Newport Nobby might get a mention???
Enjoying them, too.
I'm even allowed to watch these 'live' rather than recorded to be watched (much) later!

Well Newport Nobby got a mention tonight, whilst he was on his bike!

Before The Minstrels became unPC :-[
I saw the NEWPORTNOBBY reference. Knew someone would post up first!
Just catching up with the recent Great Continental Railway Journeys and saw the Hamburg episode. Michael Portillo hand-painted a figure of himself (and very well at that), to be placed on Hamburg Station in the huge railway layout at Minatur Wonderland. There's a pretty good five minute intro video available on the website, with some great little vignettes:

Really enjoyed this weeks episodes - so far. Mainly because they are lines that I know (North Downs, Southampton, etc) and even Wokingham station where I have spent many an hour shivering in the cold :cold:. The station has been completely remodelled since the episode so the 'hell hole' days are now over :claphappy:
The Newbury and Bristol ones have had more meaning for me. Newbury is where I finished my first long-distance cycling trip in 2012, and Bristol is 'just up the road' from me and somewhere I considered moving to last year.
