Hi folks.
I know this question will of been asked before and probably beaten to death.
What are people's views on running the new breed of stock with can motors on pwm.
I ask because I have built my own dc / pulsed controler which I use on my em layout. ( which by the way use mashima can motors).
I have test run a couple of loco's all which run perfectly well on dc. Its just I find with the pulse they will crawl better and run much quieter than dc.
What's anybodies views.
The floor is open.

Jon
High frequency pwm I'd consider.. same as DCC chips do

The pulsed ac uses the full wave rectified voltage from the transformer which is at mains frequency of 50Hz. the waveform from the controller on pulsed ac is not the same as pwm.
The loco's run really well on pulsed and do not get any warmer than normal dc
Do you use pulsed or dc
Many thanks

I have can motors running PWM DC and have not noticed any problems. This is PWM produced from battery power via a radio control module. The PWM frequency is 16KHz.

Yes they generally use an H bridge and produced high frequency DC pulsed power.
Here's a short clip of my ivatt 2 running up hill on pulse. As can be seen there is no change in speed up hill or along the flat once over the crest.Very happy with the result. On dc the controller needs to be set higher and still slows on the incline. Whichis less than 2%.
