Title: Modelling the "Binliner"
Post by: Western Exile on December 09, 2013, 02:32:48 PM
I would be interested to hear from anyone who has modelled one of the "Binliner" or domestic waste trains, or better still, see some pictures (of the models). Where I used to live in the 1990s, I was quite familiar with the Brentford-Appleford and Bath-Calvert flows and seem to remember that the former train usually loaded to 20 Freightliner-type flat wagons in 4 sets of 5 with buffers only on the outer ends of each 5 vehicle set. The latter train was shorter and made up of wagons with buffers at both ends. It seems to me that if I were to attempt to model one of these trains it would be using the Farish Freightliner wagons with 3 x 20 foot shipping containers modified and painted to look more like the refuse containers. So, has anyone had a go at doing this?

IIRC the single unit flats were KFAs (there were various varieties - some shorter than others).

More recently some of the binliners have run on single unit Freightliner FEA-Es or FRAs (one of the Calvert flows - probably from East London).

None of which are available RTR unfortunately.  Vonzack (on this forum) is doing a 3D print for the FEA-Es.

The waste containers themselves look substantially different from normal 20ft containers. Personally I would look at 3D printing them.

Some useful photos here: http://ukrailwaypics.smugmug.com/search#q=binliner&i=0 (http://ukrailwaypics.smugmug.com/search#q=binliner&i=0)

I have seen various attempt at modelling the 'binliner' including someone who made a master model of one of the containers and then cast others. They were selling them at one time although it might be difficult to track them down.

This is something ive always wanted to create.
Ian stoate made a binliner container kit. I have one set, then he stopped producing them

I believe Wild Boar Fell in rmweb is currently doing so

Was on shapeways as WSF only - Iv asked Matt to add FUD as an option. Will look superb if the OO version is anything to go by.

I'm putting together a Manchester to Roxby rake of bins using about 10 Farish Freightliners

Looking good, and you can ballast the wagon with old cabbage for the authentic scent

Now they look awesome, who made the containers?

They are actually the Ian Stoate ones that you mentioned above.
