Title: Midland Autocoach
Post by: jackdaw on October 16, 2013, 10:36:19 PM
Does anybody know where I can get hold of a midland autocoach? I've seen instructions for converting suburban brake, but nervous about my skills. Is there a kit out there or does anybody have a surplus model I can buy?

Midland or LMS ? (btw autocoach is GWRism - 'push pull' or 'pull push' or "motor coach" is a better search term for Midland/LMS stuff)

The Midland ones were I believe clerestory stock of some form. The LMS inherited these, and the LNWR ones and their own, plus some craziness from the minor companies.

I don't know of any models for the Midland one or LNWR ones but there is a kit for the LMS ones. The Midland ones I know of would be very hard to do as conversions as they came from 52ft 1874 pullman stock which were grand American style coaches - in fact you'd probably want to start with a US model not a British one.

Be sure to let us know how you get on, Jackdaw. It's always useful (and interesting) to see the results of any kit-building or scratchbuilding.

Depending upon the period modeled, in the 1950s some LMS push-pull driving trailers were converted form Stanier corridor brake thirds and ran with a third open, both types are available RTR from Farish with some modification needed to the brake end to produce the driving trailer windows. Etched Pixels supplies push pull coach ends by the way ;)

I'm certainly interested in doing a Southern Railway push pull version to complement my M7. Someone sold a Graham Farish carriage conversion to push pull on eBay a few months back and it went for quite a price. More than I could match.

I'm about to convert some old Farish suburbans to an ex lbsc pus-pull set.

I stumbled upon this by accident while looking something else up.It has descriptions on converting the LMS built (ex Midland) push-pull coaches from a Farish suburban.

http://www.igg.org.uk/gansg/00-app3-4/ap3-pp.htm (http://www.igg.org.uk/gansg/00-app3-4/ap3-pp.htm)

(fair way down the page)

has instructions and notes on what you need to cut/fit.

In the process of butchering an old suburban brake, I need to buy some of Deluxe Material's glazing glue (been dragging my feet over this). Searching the 'web' shows quite a few styles, I got the impression some where locally converted. Cheers john.
