Title: Running In Trains
Post by: RizUK on October 03, 2013, 05:32:47 AM
Hi

I have seen this mentioned a few times and guess it's the same principle as with new cars but what does it actually mean for a) new trains b) second hand trains.

I have just purchased a couple of trains second hand, none new as yet, I have nothing to run them on yet but I'm working on it.  My local model shop has tested both and in his view they both run strong forwards and backwards.

Once I get a layout or basic oval up set up what should i do?

Do they need oiling in some way, do they have to be left running at a certain speed for a length of time in each direction?

Thanks in advance.

It's generally thought that new locomotives need to be run in for about half an hour in each direction at about half speed. If you use an oval, then try 15 minutes going each direction forward and reverse to make up the hour so the wheels and gears see left hand and right hand curves.

I suppose for old stock, running in should already have been done.

As for lubrication, the service sheets from the manufacturer are available on line. If in doubt I suggest do not lubricate to begin with. Listen for sounds of binding an lubricate lightly if you hear it.

Brand new locos/units come with pre-oiling instructions which should be followed - generally I think (?) Farish advise no oiling and Dapol advise some cleaning of transit-grease and a light oiling ;)
