This caught my eye on the BBC this lunchtime!

Always a source of debate in our household of four...me and my eldest son don't feel the cold so much but my wife and youngest son manage to comment about having a window open any-time of year which in my book is just a good thing to do regardless of the time of year to keep air moving through!
I grew up a house which didn't have central heating until I was around ten or so. I can remember it was cold at certain times of the year, even to the point where ice formed on the inside of the windows, but you never moaned. You either went and sat in the living room or kitchen which were generally much warmer or put a jumper on!
Got mine on again today, was on yesterday and one day last week. Sometimes find the energy to go upstairs and find a (much) thicker jumper.
Different people genuinely feel the cold more than others. I have an underactive thyroid and sometimes shiver even when it is moderately warm.
This article covers the should we/shouldn't we switch it on debate in reasonable depth

Hi
I'd like to have the choice. Our central heating is broken and has been since March. This is the problem when you get a family member to do the work, you are bottom of a very long queue of paying customers.
Cheers
Paul
Mine is set to come on if the temperature drops below 20 degrees, and it started coming on last Friday :worried:
I am a chap who lives on his own as well. What I do is not too disimilar to others.I hold off on the official switching on of the central heating until October as well.
My hot water and central heating system is of an open vented, balanced flue system that uses motorised diverter valves to control either the hot water and central heating circuits.
What this means is that twice a day during the summer, the hot water side of the system is in use,ie boiler does its job of warming up the water. On the motorised valves, there is a small lever that allows manual opening of these valves to aid draining down and filling up the system. What I have done is set the valve on the central heating diverter and hey presto, heating comes on with the hot water. In October,I'll reset the time clock to allow the heating to come on indepently of the hot water but for now,I have what could loosely be termed as free heating. That being that it costs no more than it does at present.
As for the subject of feeling the cold more,I weighed 20 stone around 8 years ago.I now weigh 13 and a half stone so naturally,I feel the cold more now there is nowhere near as much of me.Bloomin expensive having to buy new clothes for a night out or whatever is happening, makes you feel like a woman in the sense that they never have owt to wear.I don't either, just zepplin dust covers on hangers in the wardrobe.lol

Pete, that's a very impressive weight loss and must have worked wonders for your health and life expectancy, well done! As someone who has never had a weight problem I'm always very impressed when I see figures like that particularly as I work in the health sector and know the sort of damage being overweight can cause. Congratulations and having a sparse wardrobe is a small price to pay!
