Washes mouth out first but the mechanisms and track are N gauge.
In the last 14 days I have built a complete 009 mini layout and an etched brass Loco that uses a Kato 11-105 bogie chassis.
Track is some of the Tomix stuff I had lying around (140mm radius ).
Loco shown in picture above, based on a GE Boxcab. The layout size is 420x350mm and the total cost has been around £20.
OK, I did have some stuff squirreled away so apart from the foam board and the loco body kit no money was spent.
Great job Mike. Interesting loco! Looks like fun.
Nice little layout.
Thank you for your kind comments,
I may be doing more in this scale because I can actually handle the bits without using a magnifing glass.
Don't be alarmed tho - No decent N gauge loco's will be sacrificed.
Only stuff like that 'orible bachman Plymouth 0-6-0 switcher and a couple of old minitrix 0-6-0 tank loco's needed for any future loco kits. Still trying to sort out what to do about the one kit that needs a good farish Motor bogie.
Mike.. how come you can produce more goodies than me, when you are "only doing dioramas" than I can in months of "modelling".
Jerry, think it might be called imagination.
Because I am not worried about having to fill a massive area and happy to do freelance stuff in small areas, maybe that helps.
Just to rub salt in you wounds :bounce: That is a fully working layout, I have also built an 009 open coach today- postman delivered it at 1100 hrs, painted and test run 5 minutes ago.
I think that doing this 009 stuff is really giving me a buzz. I have a working layout that I can test all stock on and because every thing is kit built more of a fun.
Etched Brass or whitemetal Loco Kits. Am concentrating on plastic rolling stock.
There will be some Scalescenes and Smartmodels buildings as well.
Ouch!!!
I dabbled in the 009 stuff many years ago with my Gurgle and Wobble Railway. Had great fun with it before discovering.... Women my eventual downfall.
Glad to hear the card kit addiction is still strong though. Keep em coming!!
Guilty as charged mi lord.
Problem is I'm now having to buy new scalescenes kits to suit the larger scale.
However I am ordering them in a different finish so could still use them for N, just printer reduction needed.
Also making etched brass working couplings :help: Cost cutting, they look a bit on the large size but are compatible with other makes and at only £5.00 for 5 pairs
I'm not going to complain too much.
If you DON'T complain you will be ostracised from the Grumpy Old gits club!

I think I may definately be loosing the plot now.
Going to try scratch building one of these in 009.

Chassis is one of the Caramel ones.
Next kit will involve the Bachman Plymouth chassis but that is a couple of weeks away at the moment.
:uneasy: Started stripping some rail from some offcuts of flexitrack.
Idea is to use it to make some 120mm radius points. Plan if I get finished will be
2RH, 2 LH and 1 Y for the new layout.

Just to prove to Jerry Howlett I am still card modelling. These are the larger scale versions of ones already built in N. Both buildings are lit.
Good for you, Mike.
Remind me what were these Kits I like them....... The lighting effect looks really good in ("Shhhh") grown up scale.....
I am persevering with the canal, about to build a wharf to finish it off but still don't know how to put it in place... However I have finished the power station after all these months.
Keep at it.
Jerry
Cheers Jerry,
The kits came from http://www.clevermodels.net/, (http://www.clevermodels.net/,) The track in that last shot is a length of N Flexitrack - not purchased any 009 track yet.
Currently working on a Scalescenes Platform kit.
The whole layout will be built using A4 sized modules in a larger frame. It enables me to work at the dining table without causing too much disruption.
The railway works, provisional layout fits on a sheet of A4 paper.
Will include working turntable. Room for 5 Locos.
This other scale stuff is getting scary, first attempt - not yet finished 120mm radius point.
Is that a convertor point from Narrow to Broad Gauge ? :bounce:
Seriously Mike, looks like a nice piece of soldertrickery.
Jerry
Just because I have not put the rest of the rails in yet - no Jerry it will be 9mm gauge.
Any way where are the pics of your boiler house that you say you have finished? :hmmm:
I posted the brickwork pictures and have done lots since. No Excuses.
Looking good so far. I think I'd have chickened out and gone for stub points like a lot of quarry railways did :beers:
Well impressed!! :admiration: :admiration: I wish I could get my soldering to look so good, :envy: . It's a good job all mine is hidden. :-[

However I have just found ANOTHER source of card kits albeit 1/160 and its a postal delivery job, this one is Crofton Pumping Station....
I have tried to add other pics from photobucket but I keep wining a new Italian smart phone..... Moving to angry thread.
Jerry
Cheers guys, that point is my first attempt using just a paper template.
No jigs or special tools used.
Sleepers are std copperclad fiberglass, rail is code 80 pulled from an offcut of Peco flexi. Every thing done using the mk1 eyeball for the bends etc. Soldered using an Antex 15w Iron and std electronic Multicore solder.
Only track gauge I have is the small block one that is supplied by Microtrains and contains their coupling jig as well.
Alan -I did think about stub points but decided to go this route, next up when this one is finished will be a Y

Mike,
Station building with lights looks like something from the Will Hay "Ghost train" set, you are doing well. The point is also impressive and being narrow gauge has the right look about it. My efforts into 009 were years ago with the Gurgle Wobble Railway.
Jerry

matchstick bridges
I'm impressed by the matchstick bridges. They look fabulous.
Very nice bit of brasswork with that tipper. But my vote goes for the matchstick bridge. Now I can put the box of Italian matches to good use as they are smaller than UK matches and are NO GOOD FOR LIGHTING FIRES!!!
Nice to see you are keeping busy.
Jerry
Thanks for the comments on the bridges.
The woodwork in the mine entrance was also supplied by Swan Vesta.
The handrail on the footbridge is actually a cocktail stick.
Next up will be a matchstick built platform once they come out of the colouring solution that I am experimenting with ( Cold expresso coffee with the used bean grindings put in the solution).

Matchsticks. Very innovative in N gauge. In view of the scale size of a matchstick, in retrospect I am surprised this is the first use I have seen of them since joining the forum. Especially for the bridges where they are being used for what they are rather than as for fabricated raw material. Don't know if that comes over but I know what I mean.
Lovely work, the crane is amazing.
Cheers Steve

New projects in the pipeline include 1200 x 250mm mini layout using 3 of the micro baseboards from Tim Horn.
This will include a beach complete with breakwaters, possibly a cliff and a small narrow gauge tourist railway with mini works, beach huts, etc.
Some more scratchbuilt track with servo controlled points.
Have a sheet of 50mm foam in stock ready, the servos but no controllers yet.
May try some scratch built rolling stock as well.
Keep posting the wee big stuff.
Jerry
I'd missed the last set of pictures. It's really well made, and looks good fun. :)
:thankyousign: for the comments guys.
The trackplan for the new layout will be dependant on a couple of buildings I am waiting to be delivered and then built.
Due to the nature of this new layout all track will be handbuilt and the rolling stock a combination of 3d prints and Etched brass kits.
Buildings will be card kits from various manufacturers and hopefully will look ok as they are several scales.
Looking at building one of the new railcars as radio controlled.
Just need to sort out the battery and charger. Will be on a Kato 103/104 chassis.
Sourced the rest of the R/C gear. TX approx £25 ,RX similar price but means can be run on any layout DC or DCC with live or insulated frog points with out worry.
Will post build on here when I do it.
New layout basics as built so far. Decision made not to hand build the track as reliability needs to be a priority on this one.

Should never have made them illegal. A night in the pillory or stocks would do some of the hooligans a power of good.
I thought the instruments of torture were the pub benches - Could never get on or off one without bashing my shins. ;D
:uneasy: Just had a play around with some offcuts of stuff in the modeling box and

Sorry Malc, only working motive power at present is 2 Railbuses, one is the one going up and down on the video. :sorrysign:
Due to my dislike of struggling to fit working couplings on 009 stock I decided that I shall concentrate on Railbus/Railcars only.
Full marks there Mike.

Scale change for a new year - still 9mm track but an experiment at the moment. O9 7mm to the foot Equivalent to 15 or 18" narrow gauge. Wagons arebeing built on Peco 10' wagon chassis and Locos powered by the standard Kato 103.

Have decided to stop doing stuff based on 9mm .
Can't get on with it anymore. Also not logging into forum as I used to.
I scraped 4 baseboards with all the ballasted track on it. 2 bin bags of buildings and scenic stuff got rid of.

I certainly understand Oldman and can only hope that medications can find a suitable balance for you soon....................... (Or of course that a long prayed cure may suddenly appear)
I guess to some extent that I`m lucky in that I only need to take a weeks dosage of steroids about every 7/8 weeks
Hoping you feel loads better very soon, OM.

Very sorry to hear of your problems, Oldman, and hope things turn around for the better soon.
Fingers crossed that everything turns out OK, Oldman. Keep your spirits up.

Cheers, Sadly my choice is building the scenery and stuff not the running of the trains- hence I can knock up a diorama easily but a full scale working layout is a problem I cannot get my head around. To give an idea of the scale involved here the picture below is during the construction of the bridges with a 5p coin for comparison

Busy trying out different building ideas- 6mm wargame models so slightly small for Z.
Time to update you on what I am doing.
Staying with the tiny stuff but have also had computer issues and found Photobucket is a current pain. Pictures have become a thing of the past so I only use my mobile phone to browse forums.
Health is still causing issues - have just changed doctors so hopefully that may improve.
Currently looking at some stuff from IDL to do something different using some Z gauge micro scenes that can be laid over their linear power track - if I can do it right I will be able to have different locations and run different styles of trains in the appropriate settings.
Sorry to hear about your ongoing health issues and hope the change of doctor brings you better treatment.
Thanks Mick.
When I have some results I'll let you all know.

A new broom, they say, works wonders.
Well not so much wonders but I know that changing my GP last year has given me a bit of a future. Theres no miracle cures available yet and the future on new medications can make life bearable for most of the time now so I wish you luck and a future
As I am currently housebound and not allowed to do anything that involves heavy lifting I am playing with fitting micro magnets to my Z scale WW1 stock ready for when the IDL track is ordered.
I ordered the little wooden box that the smallest loop of track fits in and think that this idea is very promising.
Not a lot happening at present, have got to wait for the weather to be more friendly to enable me to do the next stage that involves having windows open.
.
In between my painkillers I have had the windows open and have been busy building some Swiss centenary , the soldered ones are fine but not happy with the ones I built using superglue.
Unfortunately I will not be able to rebuild those because all the extra bits that have been fitted.
Also I believe it's dangerous to heat up set superglue.
Best regards,
Joe

For what it's worth, new gp's even longer wait time to get an appointment, currently just about coping with chronic back pain that pain killers don't seem to be helping, done prescription strength co-codamal and pain patches may be next on the agenda.
Trying to do a little modelling but can't concentrate for more than 10 minutes.
Sorry you are having such an uncomfortable time just now.
Hope you feel loads better very soon.
Dave G
So sorry to hear nothing has improved :(
Hope you get it sorted.
Just spent 2 days trying to make 10 dummy catenary masts.
Currently looking at bits of wire glued to styrene uprights but will have to do as they are only for effect.
The etched brass ones I have are now beyond the limits of my budget. I need about 50 single masts.
Any chance of a pic please?
Will sort something out when I get some more camera batteries and am using a pc instead of my mobile phone.
Just got to sort out the cable support system and then spray paint in primer before I sort out pictures.
Prototype based on are the poles on the Brunig line in Switzerland.
Just had an insane idea that might work.
Looking on shapeways there is a French steam locomotive body that allegedly fits on a pacific class 4-6-2, do I rebody my Northern Pacific unit hoping that I can hide the DCC conversion?
Back off on a tangent am looking a 2foot park railways using the T gauge stuff. Will eventually make up my mind and actually commit to something on a baseboard
Couple of pictures of std gauge Z and then some NG Z (the park railway stock ) 2' on T gauge (3mm gauge)

All the bits are from Shapeways and everything in the third picture from the same designer.
Jeez - I can (just about) see the attraction but have problems at times with N gauge let alone going smaller
