Title: One for the Trekkies
Post by: Adam1701D on August 22, 2013, 07:49:02 AM
There's a new partwork in town, featuring the starships of Star Trek, starting with the Galaxy Class NCC 1701-D from The Next Generation, which I picked up yesterday.

Have to say the quality of the model is far better than I expected with a level of fine printing and panel work on a par with the best RTR model railways. The ship ha clear plastic inserts in the warp nacelles and a nice, heavy stand that allows for different display positions. Well worth £1.99 for the initial issue.

The next issue will feature the refit Enterprise from the Motion Picture, the finest spaceship ever designed IMHO, followed by the Klingon Bird of Prey.

Plenty of goodies promised including the Excelsior, Romulan Warbird, Voyager and even the Prometheus.

Do you know how much are the normal issues going to cost Adam?

If I get the first one, my OCD will kick in and I'll want the lot  ::)

Just to set the cat amongst the pidgeons here, my favourite variation of Star Trek will always be Deep Space 9 so where's the model of that then :'(

The cube comes as a freebie when you subscribe.... The sphere was in Startrek somewhere, i'm 90% sure i've seen it before... I'm a bit of a low calorie trekkie, so i couldn't tell you which episode.

The Borg Sphere first appeared in the movie First Contact and made numerous subsequent appearances in Voyager.

I agree that at £9.99 it is going to be very expensive - I may just get the odd one or two favourites.

Hmm, didn't see a scale model of Seven of Nine - now that would make it worthwhile subscribing.

Err ... you do realise that some people pay up to £850 for this model ?  :o

The price it's listed at is very reasonable !  I can't recall if this is the 'special' or the ordinary edition ...

What is the difference between the editions...I'm almost afraid to ask. :-[

Gawd ... now you're asking ...

Just checked an old catalogue (she was released in '06 I think), and it looks like that one pre-dates her (odds are it's the 05 one).

I know she was available in two outfits - one silver (400 made), and one maroon (that's the special ... 200 made).  The difference for the special was just the maroon uniform, and the cost was a bit more too I think (usually, the specials had something extra - eg both the Obi-Wan (Alec Guinness) and Darth Vader figures had droids - Obi-Wan had the learning remote that shot Luke in the Falcon when practicing with the light saber, while Darth had the "toaster" droid that Chewie roared at & sent fleeting when "captured" on the Death Star).  Personally, I prefer the silver outfit ;)

For some reason, most (all ?) of Trek is missing from their site :(

I bought the magazine today with the first model and I am astounded at the quality of the model.
What I think is a big omission is there are no Vulcan ships  :confused1:  I always thought the design of the Vulcan ships was way ahead of the others.

If they had only made it a monthly magazine then I feel more people would manage to fit it into their budgets.  When I was chatting to the shopkeeper she agreed there would be very little take up at £9.99 every two weeks.

If you have not bought the first magazine yet, you will be missing out a highly detailed starship  :heart2:

cheers John.

Might by the first two, I love my trek but I'm absolutely in love with the "JJ-prise" I don't get all the nerd rage about the new ship and movie,

Are they going to be to scale the models surely There's a size differance to a constitution JJ-prise and the galaxy class?

having looked at the website these models they are pushing with these mags are just the furuta collectibles models re-hashed, they can be bought on ebay and most of the less popular models far below £9.99 each, yes the magazine is a plus point but they usually get a bit thin, especially with ships that never featured much in the shows just trumped up schematics and scene grabs of their 5 mins of fame on the screen,,,,,

N gauge? Probably not!*

But to concur with Scotsoft above, the model is really nice, and for £1.99 for this issue, amazing value. I can't see myself getting every single issue, but for sure some of the ones with models I happen to like. Shame they don't seem to have the Vulcan shuttle (http://en.memory-alpha.org/wiki/Long_range_shuttle) from the first film; I always thought that was a really nifty design.

Cheers, NeMo

*Quick calculation suggests that if the real NCC-1701 D is 642.5 m long, then at 1:148 it'd be 4.3 m in length at n scale!

My Enterprise is 1:600 and is 48cm long...
I suppose I could hang it over my layout and just tell people it's far away...

I'm quite a Star Trek fan, original and newer series but I wouldn't
spend a ha'penny on something that looks like it came out of a
Christmas cracker. So  beam me up Scotty and set phasers
to tickle.

It's N gauge Jim ,but not as we know it. :D

Seriously, then I WANT whatever crackers you get at Christmas! Couple pictures of the model Enterprise in question in and out of the transparent stand, and no, it doesn't blend in well with the scenery! The judiciously placed Land Rover gives an idea of scale.

Is the size, paintwork and detail worth £1.99; probably yes. But £9.99 for the subsequent models after the special offers are done, more of an open question.

Cheers, NeMo

Nice pix Nemo.

Here's a true tale, sort of related to this thread, in a pub I frequent in Glasgow,
kind of place where you nod to the regulars, know their first names and make
small talk there was a guy called Mick or Mark, and when asked if he was doing anything special would say he was working on his boat. Eventually he said it was finished, and someone asked where he was taking it , like Loch Lomond or the
Clyde. He looked a bit bewildered at the question. Turned out it was one of these
part works, build your own Cutty Sark or HMS Victory month by month.
Conversation then went a bit flat, some of the regulars had thought they might get
an invite to a trip on the water.  :(
