Hi,
Thanks to the link from MREmag this morning, enjoying the reliving of my first brush with the hobby:

Issue 8 - 1962 in my case, when an non-enthusiast uncle - long since having received his celestial reward for this :hmmm: - gave me, unprompted and not near enough to my birthday or Chrimble to be anything of particular note, a copy which I pawed over until it soon fell to bits. I didn't start actively pestering my parents until Issue 12 - 1966 edition
Regards, Gerry 8)
I had the 1975, 1976 and 1977 editions , then I changed to N Gauge :)
My most pawed over catalogue was the 1979 W&H - such a wide selection for a 14 year old!

There wasn't one when I got my first 3-rail Sir Nigel Gresley Hornby Dublo set. (Christmas 1951.....)
Don't think I've ever looked at a train catalogue of any gauge my life, let alone bought one :D

I've only ever had 2 books...........and I've coloured one in already

Advanced for your years then >:D
My first inspiration was the 1982 Hornby catalogue, spent many happy hours making up wish list's - Those were the days !
The modern ones just don't have the same appeal, they seem to have lost something... :hmmm:

I remember the 28th edition catalogue as well as few of the late 70's ones as I inherited them after my grandad passed away. The mid nineties editions bring back the most memories; one of them possibly the 41st edition, I'd seen in my local model shop and wanted it as I think it had the Eurostar model in it. I found it on the table after school one day as Dad had been down to 'Trans, models and hobbies' in Bognor and got it as a reward for map reading on a long journey the previous Sunday!
I think my first was 1971, the second of the Terence Cuneo covers.
Anyone still looking for the mouse? ;)

I think my first was 1971, the second of the Terence Cuneo covers.
The first Cuneo cover was 1962. Others were 1963, 1965, 1966, 1967, 1970, 1971, 1972, 1973, 1974 then a long break until 1993. I think my favourite is the 1966 Tri-ang-Hornby cover. Interestingly both locos on that cover are made by Bachmann now!
Perhaps easier to say that it is the 1970's cover that is the earliest one I have then as I didn't see the early ones, I just stopped when I saw one that I didn't recognise :-[
No worries - at least you can now get to see some more nice paintings! :)
1990 and 1993 for me.
In 1994 I got my Farish trainset and, well, 00 never stood a chance :D

I also remember having edition 8 1962 with the Terence Cuneo cover.
I never cared for the catalogues; it was always about the Hornby track plan booklets, for me!
Now, now, Vanders !
While trackplans were good for dreaming of what you would one day have, the catalogues were just stuffed full of the pretties (and there were some not-pretties too mainly in BR Blue and Toothpaste :P) ...
I still enjoy getting them, although these days it's less of dreaming of what's coming, and more of wondering if they'll ever do what they promise :( Case in point - the O1 class in last years catalogue was advertised with a Tyne Dock photo - yet they haven't done one in that fit :scowl: SWMBO was very disappointed, so much so I'm going to have to get a conversion kit & do it myself :-X
SWMBO does still sometimes dig a pile of trackplans out & covers the bed, to spark off ideas on what she wants for the large layout :smiley-laughing:. Trouble is - she's lost the plan she drew up, so has to start all over again ! :'(
