Hi Tim,
I have three of those vans, which certainly did run in the UK from the later 1970s, though I widened and raised them all slightly so they mixed better with the 1:148 wagons. Luckily the way they were constructed lent itself to alteration. Basically the grey roof clips off, splice down either side of the pillars, blend in a bit of 30 thou." plasticard on each of the side/end pieces, glue back together and repaint the grey (only). I also put in plasticard washers on the bogies (can't remember how much) and lowered the bufferbeams slightly (article in an old Practical Model Railways around 1983 or thereabouts). Altered like that they don't go too badly even with the Dapol Cargowaggon ferry vans. I've also got some Roco vans (ref: 25175) which make very good facsimiles of the older 4-wheel ferry vans.

Both links worked fine for me.  Maybe you were just unlucky Joseph!  :)

The second wagon is HO, but I'm sure you realised that and it was just for reference.

I have 3 of the roco VTG vans
And have them in a mixed rake of speedlink oba flats so you dont notice any diffrence in height like you would see with a VBA or VGA vans..

Modellbahn Union canvas hood wagons, I have 4 weathered and one not in DB liveries under rule 1 running as a short train.
Not sure how undersized they really are, but look good (especially the weathered ones) with Grafar BRAs / BYAs & Dapol Telescopic hood wagons.

Iain

cheers for replies

i'll look out on ebay and at future shows for some suitable continental wagons. i wouldn't buy new ones because they cost so much and without seeing the wagons in real life i'm not sure i definitely want them.

it's a shame there are different scales for continental and british n gauge
