Title: Farish Mallard
Post by: Rob H on July 15, 2011, 05:43:59 PM
Does anyone know why Farish no longer produce the Mallard ? Or know if they plan to introduce it again ?

To my knowledge (a forum member may know otherwise) the last A4 they produced was the Silver Fox in BR green livery late crest. I know that they made at least x2 versions of Mallard, in LNER Blue (world record winner) and again in early crest BR Blue express livery (late 40's early 50's) but these are rare-ish

In answer to your question I dont know why they no longer produce this model, but I would guess that they are looking to improve the look and the mechanism of the loco, like they have done with diesels like class 47, 37 and 08 (let me stress this is only my personal guess based upon previous re-incarnations of old poole designs)

If you want an A4 though, have you considered the Minitrix Mallard? Although no longer produced these are still frequent on E-Bay, and for a 25+ year old loco, they still hold their own.

Hello Rob.

I spotted this on E-Bay this morning. May be of some interest:

I have seen the price rise over the last few hours, and i stumbled across it on a related search - so good luck Rob.

I have the Silver Fox A4 which my brother brought me as a present 2 years ago, and I must say it is a good runner. My only criticism is the two front wheels are very small, but this is a chinese improvement on the old poole design so im not to fussed. The paint work is good and I must say she is one of my favorites.

N Brass Locos do a front bogie for LNER engines to replace the Farish one. You can buy an etch, a kit with wheels or even one made up. Minimum of 12"`radius curves but well worth looking into.

I cannot say for sure but I would speculate that BachFarish no longer produce the "Mallard" or any other variant of the A4 because of the recent introduction of the Dapol model. As one would expect of a brand new model compared to the very old Farish one it is superior in almost every respect.

Whether BachFarish will introduce a retooled one at some point is anyone's guess, but I would suspect not as I doubt they would see a market for it now the Dapol one is on the shelves.
