From what i can remember reading most of it is done with O gauge, and for close up work 1/24th seems to stick in my memory.
edit: i must have a shocking memory, heres a link to the info you seek http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_the_Tank_Engine_and_Friends#Models (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_the_Tank_Engine_and_Friends#Models)
Though now most of it is down via cgi so no scale at all.
Much prefer the real models over the cgi's ones, tho the 2 1/2 yr old thomas nut in the house dosent care either way!!!!!

Stinky steamies....... Bring on Devious and his hydrocarbon burning bretherin,   thomas and the gas axe.......

And the 'original' (as in the Reverend's originals - he had a spare Thomas) are on display some of the time at the Narrow Gauge Museum Tywyn, as is his study  although they normally keep it closed or the stale pipe smoke smell honks out the entire museum.

My Parents had the honor of being Married by the Reverend Wilbert Awdry at Kings Norton Church in Birmingham, I bet they didn't know back then that their first born would become a Thomas freak
