I have a relativly small layout, with very little in the way of storage yards. AS my stock is ever increasingly growing im running out of space. I want somewhere that i can easily store the trains when im not using them, but they are safe say a chest of draws.
Dont want to keep on having to get them in and out the boxes all the time. What do people use to temp sotre there stock when its not on the layout.
I was thinking of buying something like this to store my locos, coaches & wagons.

I also use a similar system to mickyffin -- relatively cheap and safe storage.

I use equipment cases (normally used for electronic or photographic equipment) with the foam inserts removed. Each has three wooden stock trays (30mm pine moldings for the long sides, plywood for the base and ends) and an additional plywood lid. The three trays and lid fit together into a block, using nail heads and drilled holes for alignment. Some 1" foam packing around the sides of the case, a bit thinner top and bottom. Each tray is divided into eight rows for stock using a sheet of bubble wrap rucked up into ridges and glued down, with more on the underside of each tray and the lid to protect and hold the top of the stock. Some trays have an additional folding flap of bubble wrap as well. The 30mm pine moldings are just the right height for N gauge stock lying on its side plus two layers of medium bubble wrap.
Total capacity is 3 trays x 8 rows x (2.5 locos/coaches or 7-8 wagons), or a total of 48 locos/coaches plus 36 wagons, or simply about 180 wagons.

Wow! This is cool! Nice solution.
I have 2 of these - not cheap but very good.

Think I ordered special inserts. Had them about 6 years.
Another option but cheaper http://www.diy.com/nav/fix/handtools-storage-workwear/tool-storage-workbenches/tool-storage/toolboxes___trollies/B-and-Q-Two-In-One-Storage-PVC-Case-11247837?skuId=11758542 (http://www.diy.com/nav/fix/handtools-storage-workwear/tool-storage-workbenches/tool-storage/toolboxes___trollies/B-and-Q-Two-In-One-Storage-PVC-Case-11247837?skuId=11758542)
cheers guys its given me some ideas
I have been using 3 boxes similar to those in the link below for 12 years or more to store my Humbrol paints - cheap and surprisingly serviceable.
For rolling stock you will still need some foam, Not so big as the cases so easier to store several of these together.

I like the blue plastic foam-lined boxes I bought from JB's Model World at TINGS. Ebay is coming up empty now though, anyone know what happened to him?
I like the boxes from JB's Model World as well - I still see him at shows occassionally.
Edit: looking at his ebay account he still lists stuff in batches and has been selling recently.
Cheers, Mike
Ah, I didn't look at the history, just saw the empty store - thanks Mike.
Had the same issue, you can view my solution here...

That is a great way of displaying your stock Bob, I really like it very much.
Great way of keeping them free from dust as well
cheers John.
May I suggest?

WOW! Is this something you got from there recently, they only tend to sell things for short periods.
I found these storage boxes for £2.49 each in Quality Save - you can take dividers out and make room for a loco/coach or keep it in and put in one wagon. You can even fit 2 16t mineral wagons in one section. Wouldn't be much use for transporting my toy trains but seeing as my stuff just stays in the office I thought why not!

Another satisfied customer here
I know he has sporadic medical issues so maybe he's not got anything listed at the moment for that reason. Here's a link to what he normally sells on Ebay just so people can see:-
Stupidly long Ebay link (http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_odkw=&item=271174595315&pt=UK_Trains_Railway_Models&_osacat=19119&LH_Complete=1&hash=item3f2343f2f3&_ssn=chev625&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR10.TRC0&_nkw=n+gauge&_sacat=19119&_from=R40)
These boxes also fit perfectly into those foldable plastic crates you get from cheapy shops, eight boxes to a crate :) Think I'm up to 15 boxes now! :worried:

I bought 2 of these about 6 months ago and agree with Bob, they are VERY heavy, I used extra and better fixings than those supplied as I wasn't convinced the supplied fixings were strong enough. Good quality too and if I remember rightly they were about £60 for 1 or £110 for 2. I may be wrong though on the price.
Edit: I just checked and it was indeed £60 for 1 and £110 for 2. They were a bargain at that price!
If you find any more let me know!!! :)

Same here - I presently have three of these - http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Aluminium-N-Gauge-Case-and-trays-for-42-coaches-locos-or-over-100-wagons-/230946707480?pt=UK_Trains_Railway_Models&hash=item35c57f1818 (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Aluminium-N-Gauge-Case-and-trays-for-42-coaches-locos-or-over-100-wagons-/230946707480?pt=UK_Trains_Railway_Models&hash=item35c57f1818) (sorry, don't know how to shorten the link! ??? ) However, I do also have two of the blue stock boxes too - got them from a local model railway shop for £8 each, but they were also on sale at the Bristol Thornbury Model railway show last weekend.
Here's how to shorten a link.

Gives you this:-
