In Kiawhara's layout planning Thread "Portsmouth & Southsea" this was posted.

It is a shame but Kaiwhara's layout does not extend far enough out for him to include the Still and West!
Well that's a famous pub and we decided a "Cultural Tour" was in order. Train to the harbour station and staight into

We then repaired to "Wetherspoons" for soakers, Chili Con Carne for me and off to catch the train, we remembered to change at Southampton but apparently we were resting our eyelids when the train got to Poole and woke up at Wareham @22.30, could have gone on down to Weymouth! Had to phone the long suffering to come and pick Eddie and I up!
Not bad for starters, MinZaPint but you missed out on the Flete and Firkin and the Eldon Arms and then there's the Old House at Home, the Leopold Tavern and . . . . . . .
. . . a bit further afield is the Miners Arms at Funtley which came into being as the landlord also was the contractor for building the Funtley rail tunnels. It is said that one of the Welsh miners involved in the tunnel cutting chose the name for the pub.
Congratulations that the later photos are only slightly leaning!
Oh Pengi what are you doing to me? you mean I'll have to go again :bounce: (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-eatdrink050.gif) (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php) :claphappy: and as for the leaning Edwin I find a lampost quite steadying, if that starts to move I know I'm in trouble (http://i717.photobucket.com/albums/ww173/prestonjjrtr/Smileys%20Holidays/New%20Year/2602_6454.gif)
You also missed the Brewers fayre at Clarence Pier Southsea. http://www.brewersfayre.co.uk/brewersfayre/our-pubs/portsmouth/clarence-pier.html (http://www.brewersfayre.co.uk/brewersfayre/our-pubs/portsmouth/clarence-pier.html) >:D
Crikey, with that many pubs visited,if I'd have had a pint in each one,a wheelbarrow and the big white telephone would be needed.
:dunce:

I wouldn't even get that far! I'd be comatose after the third pub :D

Did you have the fish and chips at the Still and West?
Wait, how do I in New Zealand manage yo get you lot onto the subject of Beer??? ??? :beers:
It was Minzapint who mentionned his 'cultural tour' of Portsmouth on your topic and yet he is blaming me for his inability to get off a train at the correct stop :o I'm just waiting for him to blame South West Trains for making the journey too comfortable . . .

I really shouldn't have blamed Pengi, good job she's got a good sense of humour :bounce: Getting me onto the subject of BEER is not difficult ::) Rosemary and I are going to NZ next Jan/Feb to celebrate my 70th and her retirement, flying into Christchurch and out from Auckland, travelling a mix of car & train. Hope you've got some decent ale out there, I'll be looking for tips! (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-eatdrink050.gif) (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php) Oh and the train was comfortable! I don't mind being blamed at all - it's just a bit of good fun! Not surprised you found the train comfortable - SWT Desiros, a bit of a step up from steamers eh? :P :P

Surely a step backwards. :sorrysign: Not really.
:greatpicturessign:
Nice to see photos of Pompey pubs, spent many an hour and quid in them during late 60's and 70's when serving on Frigates. Commercial Road was the main drag with loads of pubs, remember the Golden Fleece, a place the wary feared to tread, the Albany, Yorkshire Grey and many more. Happy days.
Sorry Chaps, you are mere amateurs!
Try the Edinburgh, Rose Street challange... :beers:
most folks don't get more than half way along!!!
Looks like the football club have been saved :claphappy:
Sure they'll be celebrating in all the pubs tonight. Have been to quite a few in Pompey over the years but for the life of me can't remember all the names. Don't know why? :beers:
Tried to dodge the train fare from Woking to Bournemouth on the last train while drunk once. Pretended I was asleep when the ticket guy came along, which was a few times and as so comfortable, fell asleep.
Ended up in Poole, kicked awake by a cleaner. Luckily not Weymouth but the taxi back cost me £12, the train fare was only 10!

Pah,
totally amateur ...
Some years back, my job meant I had to visit E'burg a few times a year with some of the lads I worked with; we used to hit Rose Street as soon as we'd booked into our digs, worked our way up to the top then back down again, stopping only for a
damn good steak in 'Get Stuffed' (now sadly departed :'(), & finish Rose Street by closing time ... and then head over to the pubs around the Grass Market (I
think it is - under the Castle ?) until the wee hours, and then stagger back to the digs for a few hours kip before work & doing it all over again :beers:
Ah, those were the days !
Mike
The run ashore to be had was Union Street in Plymouth. Turn right out of Stonehouse Barracks, down the hill and into the Earl Grey. Out of the Earl, turn right again and head towards the city centre, stopping at every pub. Don't recall seeing much of the city in them days!!!!
