Thanks John I`ll look into it. I use realplayer a lot these days :)
I`m still open to sugestions of software so please offer any ideas :thankyousign:
For the ripping part, I would recommend Handbrake. It is an open source project and available as a free download from:
http://Handbrake.fr (http://handbrake.fr)
Or
http://download.cnet.com/HandBrake/3000-2194_4-12651232.html (http://download.cnet.com/HandBrake/3000-2194_4-12651232.html)
As far as read/write/play you are probably ok sticking to the free Windows utilities.
Hope this helps

Unfortunatly Ive had to delete the software after it flooded my PC with malaware/junk/and unnamable rubbish as soon as I installed it :veryangry:

That's unexpected, Handbrake has been well-behaved software for quite some time.
Out of interest, did you get it from the handbrake.fr site directly, or from download.cnet.com? The latter has a tendency to install all manner of crap if you don't follow exactly the right twisty-turny maze of install options...
I've had no problems either with Handbrake. If you didn't already I would try downloading from Handbrake: http://handbrake.fr/downloads.php (http://handbrake.fr/downloads.php)
I avoid CNET for the reason mentioned.
Cheers, Mike

:-[ I took the cnet.com route which may have been the problem.
I will retry again in a few days via handbrake.fr once Im satisfied that I have cleared all traces of '*rap'. that I am still being pestered with
Many apologies for posting the CNET link. I use a Mac and therefore malware isn't a problem for me, so I clear wasn't thinking protectively enough on behalf of my Windows using brethren!
Like some of the other posters I have always found Handbrake, like most open source software, to be impeccably behaved.
To try and make it up, I will recommend another little open source free utility called Subler. After you rip a DVD you can use Subler to add details such as title, description, cast, artwork etc. I guess the rule of the game is to download it from the source rather than a third party!

:-[ :-[ All my problems have been self inflicted :'(
seems that my onboard graphics card isnt strong enogh to run blue-ray :-[ so with a 'modern add on card (ordered) things should improve :claphappy: :claphappy: :bounce: :bounce:
Have you checked to see what RAM memory is required to run this BlueRay software?
I would also check if your processor is fast enough, these problems often have a cascade effect on your hardware.
cheers John.

:thankyousign: John Ive checked every 'I' and made sure they are dotted and every 'T' in the spcs and find that I ::) should be in the clear with plenty in reserve. the only weakish point could be the PSU but I can cross that bridge if needs be when the time comes :-\
In June now and at last today have got Blue-Ray sorted out.
The monitor had a high enough resolution but was not HD so it didn`t stand a chance .
Have ended up buying a new monitor and find that its perfect. Software that seems to operate it well is
TotalMedia Extreme2 by ArcSoft.
So I`m a happy bunny at last.
(anybody want a 22" monitor that Ive got spare lolol)
