Title: How many of you are still riding motorbikes?
Post by: rodders on April 06, 2013, 11:30:40 PM
I see from nobby's post, there is an element of bike riders a mongst the inmates here.  so how many are still riding and what bike are you on?.  I have a 2007 (07)  kawasaki z750 in the best colour  which is candy green.   It has 8.500 on the clock.  i also have a 1983 honda xl185r  dirt bike and a 1983 kawasaki 550 spectre shaftie 20.00 miles.  owned since 1994. we have a breakfast club, on wednesdays we meet up at 11am and have an excellent breakfast at the log cabin on the A361   at rackenford turnoff. On a good day 50 or 60 bikes, everything from scott squirrel, douglass, ajs vincent etc etc and the not so new jap stuff! On a snowy day 2 or three heroes!  regards  Rodders

I would love to still be riding my Yamaha but I had to give up riding many years ago due to health problems.  I still stop and chat to any biker that has parked up and I live round the corner from Westgate Road in Newcastle where there can be many bikes turn up on a Saturday

cheers John.

(http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-transport031.gif) (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php)  No longer ride unfortunately.

Have still got a soft spot for Kawasaki's as I used to work for Kawasaki UK many years ago. I remember vividly the release of the Z1300 and was able to borrow the boss's machine for a weekend.  My own Kwaka was Z900 B1 which I sold to fund my racing career during which I rode many types of machines. See my profile for a few more details. for pics https://plus.google.com/photos/114704872725725719992/albums/5714190210044233633 (https://plus.google.com/photos/114704872725725719992/albums/5714190210044233633)

Stopped for all the usual reason Wife, Kids and complete lack of funds and also finally worked out that tarmac hurts ! One regret - never managed to compete on the Island  (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys/smiley-transport031.gif) (http://www.freesmileys.org/smileys.php)

I still have mine,a 1994 Honda CBR 600 FP.

It is in red, purple and blue and has the Fireblade style graphics. It is completely original and unmolested and has less than 20000 miles on the clock.Regrettably,I haven't ridden it for a few of years due to the usual lack of spare time, money and rubbish weather(I am a fair weather rider which is why my bike has no rot on it).I hope to get it back on the road for a bit of spirited riding this summer but if I don't,it doesn't really matter because it'll still be there for when I do.It is kept in my kitchen which is a nice, warm and secure location for it to be kept.

So for the time being,I get my bike fix watching the Motogp,BSB and WSB on telly.

I still ride most days, unless it's icy (not much of a problem in Devon) I have a 1975 Honda CB750F1, owned it for the last 31 years (17 when I bought it!) Still great fun to thrash around, 177,000 miles and totally reliable, Also, no electronics, so easy to maintain/service, as much fun as you can have with your clothes on!

Alas I fear I would kill myself as a Born Again Biker.
I never took my car test until I was 29 as I was bike mad. British, of course
Having passed my bike test I progressed from a Tiger 100 to a Tiger 750 and then to a Bonneville. I took the 750 Tiger on a tour of Belgium, Holland, Luxembourg, Germany, Switzerland and France and it never missed a beat. Happy days in the Isle of Man and going to camping rallies with the Triumph Owners Club. Nulli Secundus!

Never ridden a motorbike and I never will.

And before you think I'm going to bang on about bikes being unsafe it is my own sense of self-preservation that stops me! I am a speed-freak when it comes to cars and like to push a car to its limits when safe to do so, and know I would do the same on 2 wheels - probably killing myself in the process :worried: I have done plenty of amateur rallying in the past throwing Minis around, and have had my Sierra XR4x4 airborne at least once :D

One day I'd like to have a go of a fast bike somewhere safe like a track, just to feel what it's like, but that would be it for me for my own and everyone else's safety ;) Other than that I'll just stand back and admire those that can hold back just enough to stay out of the scenery

Not sure if mine counts, but I bought a 2nd hand 50cc Scooter type moped on Friday as SWMBO needs to use the car more often, so I am left needing transport in rural norfolk and cannot justify the cost of a 2nd car.

I bought one 2 years ago and had it stollen afer only a few weeks. Prior to that had been close on 30 years since I had ridden.

It looks ideal for tootling around and enjoying the wind on your face

50cc moped? Whyever not, I still have a 1964 Honda 90 for icy weather, and in the congested city of Exeter, it's a lot faster than a Ferrari :D, love it on a bike, mr Posche or BMW convertible stuck in traffic with the roof down, revving the engine impatiently, nothing beats shouting "Really fast car eh?" and trundling through the jams on 2 wheels, no matter what size the engine! :smiley-laughing:

After many years wanting a bike - I only got my licence about 3 years ago (at age 31). Had 3 bikes in that time (3 years  ::) ) - Sachs Madass, Honda CBR250R and Harley Iron.

The Harley is my daily commute to work (rain or shine) - not the quickest bike around, not the quietest of bikes around but each ride is a wonderful experience.

I also like the fact that you *never* get backchat/filthy looks from cagers (car drivers)  :)

Scooters are great. The only people that seem to talk them down are people that havent ridden one!

I've ridden a number of scooters - they're an absolute blast for getting around town... particularly when you lean so far over the stand starts to scrape on the road  :P

Due to a left ankle injury, I have to drive an auto car, so never thought about motorbikes, until found out that old Brit bikes have gear change on the right side. To ride these old bikes I still need to take the test on a left gear changer, as that is all the driving schools have, so I am stuffed. Like the moped though, and I have that on my licence, so possible starting point (before I am too old to start, at 63).

Kipper, NOT necessarily, Honda made a few automatic bike, the CB750A and the CB400A spring to mind, and some of the larger scooter type bikes are up to around 500cc and automatic. BUT, as there were so few automatic bikes sold over the years, there is no difference when taking the test, unlike cars where if you take a test in an automatic, you can't drive a manual. Google the Honda 750A, it was sold mainly in the states, where they seem to have problems using clutches, on bikes or cars, but a fair few of the 750A model have been imported into the U.K. and are very reasonably priced, also the 400A was sold in the U.K. but for some reason prices remain low! :D  So my advice, check it out, ride a bike, it's the most fun you can have with your clothes on! :smiley-laughing: :D

Ah, I thought I had to learn on a manual, if I wanted to drive a conventional motorcycle. If I can learn on an auto, then relearn the right hand manual foot change, that will be good. Would like to get a 1938 AJS 350, like my dad used to ride.

Nice bikes, but you'd need a second mortgage for one of those in good nick! :D

I had a AJ 350 single for a short while as a 'yooff'.  Weighed a ton, I could barely pick it up if I dropped it.  Weight might be a problem with a dodgy ankle.  Mind you, I knew a lad used to ride his Gold Wing, even with a broken leg, changing gear with his crutch !!!

I regretfully no longer have a bike.  I toyed with getting one of the new AJS 125's but same reason prevailed for selling my beloved Honda CB900F2B.  Bought it brand new at beginning of a month's home leave in 1982 only for some stupid kid in a car to dive across the lights in front of me, resulting in a cracked frame and a total rebuild.  :'(  It was finished the day I came home again.

I had to sell it early this year, with 33k on the clock, fitted with Krauser hard panniers and only replacements had been batteries, tyres and one half of the exhaust.  I was really a fair-weather rider too, but most times the bike wasn't convenient for work so was just for pleasure when I could at week-ends - when I was home.  Destroyed health meant I could no longer handle such a heavy bike.  Shame, she was a beauty, loved the open road.
:thankyousign:
John

Got a 1983 Kawasaki GT550 Model G1 Shaft Drive with under 18,000 miles on it, had it about 22 years last on the road 2003. Also got a Honda VFR750 FH, had it about 6 years but not been on the road for over a year due to having a full right knee replacement and just a tad uncomfortable with lack of bend in my knee so looks like the GT550 may be coming out of the mothballs. 8)

I haven't ridden for about 6 years now. :(  I have a Kawasaki KMX - the most stolen bike in the world!!!  Mine is locked away VERY well and covered by laser beams, so no naughty ideas!!!! :D  My dad and I are members of a club called the South London's Uncommitted Trikes (SLUTs), and he has an Ariel NG (ex RAF and registered in 1947), Kawasaki VN, and a trike in the making.
