:'( I have made the decision after much deliberation to move to the dark side (OO) sadly.
I have given N Gauge my best shot but part way into my first layout I now realise that my poor eyesight just isn't good enough to see me thru if you'll pardon the pun!
I have to say, Pete at Rails were fantastic yesterday and allowed me to take back the stuff I had purchased this last couple of weeks and not opened or used and swap it for OO gauge goodies. Although sad that I can't see well enough to master N Gauge I was smiling like a kid in a candy store on my way home with a shiny new Britannia Class Steamer (Clive of India) complete with digital sound though and enough points and track to build a slightly adjusted version of my original plan.
I would like to remain a member of the forum though if that's ok with the mods as the friendly and advice I have been given to date has been invaluable.

Good luck Ian hope everything works out well for you, my eyesight is getting pretty bad these days so I may join you if it gets much worse.
Thank you Dave, It's Glaucoma and old age for me :hmmm:
Hi Ian, very sorry to see you leave N Gauge, but at least you are staying in the hobby. No names mentioned but a few of us on here dabble in HO/OO Gauge aswell :-X ::)(ahem)
Im glad your staying as a member, and please let us know developments of your OO gauge layout.
All the very best for the future :NGaugersRule:
Good luck Ian look forward to seeing your progress on the new layout regardless of it being the ''darkside''' there is always the general discussion section where other gauges are allowed to be posted i believe, i would join you if i had the space as some days my eyes arent up to close work & i do enjoy the change.
Lots of ideas & threads pertain to more than N gauge so please stay here as a member :D

What a shame! You're always welcome on here so don't worry. ;)
If 00 is the dark side I must really be in trouble with my occasional dabbling in the deeply extreme dark black side (0 gauge).
At least you are staying in the hobby as whichever you dabble in at the time it's all money going back in to the hobby to fund more new toys for us to play with!!!

I wouldn't! ;)
I'd just have a MUCH bigger N gauge layout :D
As said above Ian, at least you're still in the hobby and better to admit it to yourself now rather than get frustrated later and give up altogether. After all, this is meant to be FUN! ;)
Don't be a stranger on here :)

Appreciate the reasons why you want to go to OO and it is great that you will continue to be a member of this forum. :claphappy:

Don't forget your torch Ian so as to find your way back to :NGaugeForum:
Glaucoma is no fun, neither is old age and I am sorry your plans have been dashed after all your enthusiasm Ian.
I will admit to some envy on my part due to the greater selection of locos and rolling stock there are available in the larger gauges.
I do wish you every success with your larger locos and I do hope you keep in touch.
All the very best John.
Good luck over there Ian. You are not going very far as you will only be 2mm away after all
Thank you everyone. It really proves what a great forum this is and what a nice bunch of folks you all are.

Have to admit , for months & months I keep sneaking looks at those gorgeous American Bachmann On30 narrow gauge locos....DCC + sound . Every time I look at DCC stuff on Ebay , there's always 2 or 3 of these on there at some highly tempting prices....the swines !! Even though I've spent time in the States , their railroads don't really interest me BUT I am REALLY tempted by these babies ! Purgatory Peak layout (& others)at the exhibitions - yes please ! I'm gradually running out of resistance.....HELP !!! Ric

Hi Ian,
I can certainly relate to your eyesight problem. I had excellent vision until a couple of years ago when I got my first set of glasses (43 years old). I have noticed that I find it hard to focus on N gauge "bits" even with my glasses on! That is why I ordered one of the magnifying lamps as recommended on this forum:
http://www.mysmartbuy.com/p-499-Lifemax-Daylight-Energy-Saving-Magnifying-Lamp.html#ML004 (http://www.mysmartbuy.com/p-499-Lifemax-Daylight-Energy-Saving-Magnifying-Lamp.html#ML004)
It arrived yesterday - very prompt and I am looking forward to trying it out this weekend.
Many thanks
Paddy
Hi Paddy,
Yes I have one of the lamps too but a slightly bigger version. I find it invaluable although sometimes a little awkward.
Years stuck in front of a PC screen for a living and Glaucoma has got the better of me now unfortunately so the difficult decision had to be made.
All the best
Ian

Sorry to read about your health issues Ian, really is frustrating especially when part way through a project, but delighted to hear you are staying with the hobby
If you are still deciding what to do with all your N stuff why not use the forum classified section, okay it may be a smaller audience than ebay but at least it is free, and no commission :D
Wish you all the best with your new projects

Ian,
Sorry to here this, I believe I was in Rails at the same time as you on Wednesday and I've only just twigged that it was you who tested the sound loco as me and Ollie we're testing the 5MT's.
Good luck with the 00 layout.
All the best,
Steve
Thank you Steve.

I'll be back there soon im sure are you local to them?

Perhaps Tank or the mods could set a forum for the oversized outcasts or OO for short. :P

Here, here, at least 5 years compulsory community service, no internet for at least a year and for a repeat offender, all their models seized and sold to benefit the N gauge community. Far too lenient these days, that's the problem. >:D ;)

A picture of real beauty, told a mate about you switching to OO gauge this morning, he said he would give me a hand to double the size of my shed if I wanted to run OO :hmmm: not a good idea as SWMBO would most likely chuck me out :veryangry:
Ah, but you will have a larger shed to live in
Actually it would need to be 4 times the size to have a similar layout. Erm, that's the shed I mean, not the wife.
