Title: Warwell, Warflat and WIA Arbel car carrier drawings
Post by: alibuchan on February 21, 2013, 10:21:53 PM
Hi guys,

Wondering if anyone, knows where I can get hold of scale drawings for the MOD Warwell and Warflat wagons (post 2003 versions) and the WIA Arbel car carrier wagons.

I want to have a go at producing these in N gauge using 3D printing techniques.

I know that Someone is doing them in 00 on RMWeb and have spoken to him about where he got his info which has been quite helpful but not completely conclusive.

The Warwell may be a non-starter as I am waiting on some other info about the N Gauge Society kit but if I have the info ready to go that would be great.

And before anyone says it, I know that the WIA has been done by both ATM and CJM, the ATM ones are as rare as hens teeth and I can't afford £350 for the CJM one without selling body parts.

Ay help would be very much appreciated.

There was an article in Model Rail about ten years ago which had a 4mm drawing of a Warwell.
As for the "Warflat", I have the diagram sheet only.
From my recollection, Model Rail did a kit of the "Warflat" which was almost right - again in OO though.
Good luck !

Drawings for the modern wagons can be very hard to get because  the manufacturers generally own and keep them locked away as in todays world everything is a "trade secret" "copyright" "sell you a licence" etc

Arbel went bust in 2009 and is now part of Titagarah Wagons - an Indian company. That may make it even trickier to find original sources.

That said it shouldn't be that hard to produce your own drawings - its a continuous body profile with a two step hulled end and some simple end door layout. The underframe is a bit more complicated but you can usually work out the exact position of elements by counting sleepers.

Might need etches to get the door detail and solebar bits right (some bits are very thin below that as are the steps) but otherwise doesn't look a hard one to tackle. Biggest problem is probably getting the end profile right - which just needs a clean and fairly level end on image. You can correct the perspective using the vertical line of the doors and you've got the scale from the inside edges of the track.

Bogies may be more fun and getting the close articulation to the standard of the ATM product.

Of course, there is another member on here who is producing the Warwell and Warflats, posted pictures only the other day.

Hi Timmo,

That's me!!!

I managed to find some drawings for the Warwell and Warflat.

Still nothing on the WIA so I have given up on it and decided to go down a different route with the articulated STVA car flat.

Oops, your right, that's you... Sorry.

Seeing this on my unread posts list made me think of your other thread. Didn't realise it was you too, that's part of the trouble with tiny lettering using my iPhone.

The models so far look great. I'd love some of these, and car carriers too.

Cheers, Timmo

Well in good news they have been re-engineered(?!?) and accepted.

With me in a couple of weeks.

Car carriers are still going to be a while as they are very difficult to get the articulation anywhere near right. So it's still in the design stage.

I got curious enough to scale out and remap a WIA from photographs this evening and then sit and design some articulation bits. Good excuse to play with those as thats the bit that interest me most !

Comes out at about £40 + bogies (which I don't believe match any generally available ones ?), buffers and detail bits. I also need to find some shots of the underframe area to tidy that up further - in particular what is further behind the solebars.

Can't do the end plates and end detail in polished WSF to keep the cost down so I guess you'd end up adding a printed overlay for them or a simple fold and glue etch.

Would certainly be cheaper than CJM but probably not quite to the same standard !

Have you tried asking Bernie (BernardTPM on here) if he has any drawings of the WIA which he could lend you?

Cheers, Mike
