Hi all,
I received a Farish Class 158 in the Arriva Trains Wales livery today (371-555) and it seems to be extremely noisy when running. If its going very slow it's tolerable but as soon as it is cranked up the noise is very loud. The only way I can describe it is like a whirring sound, but a mechanical whirring sound - if that makes sense!
I've only just started out in this hobby so I'm not sure if this is normal or not. Compared to my other loco which is a Farish Class 66 it's extreme.
What do you guys think?
:thankyousign: in advance!
my class 14 was similar after running in, i too am a newbie, so i returned it to my local shop who replaced it straight away, new one seems much better ;)
I have several 66s and several 158s and all the 66s are noisier so I think you may have a problem with your 158. If you are able I suggest you return it. If not then it may be a question of stripping down and running the motor with parts of the mechanism removed and see which part appears to cause the problem. However if you haven't done this before it's a bit tricky and there is a risk of losing or breaking some part. If you want someone to sort it out then BR Lines would be a good choice.
This is a shame as I bought it from a shop on the Internet so I suppose I'll have to post it back
I may pop down to my local model shop tomorrow to see if they can give it a run to confirm. Fingers crossed they'll be happy to help as I was in there the other day buying some bits and bobs.
Good news! I've just got back from the shop and it seems as though it isn't a problem and is just the sound that they make apparently. It probably just needs a good running in. Time to play with trains... :D
good news!!!
if its running smoothly at all speeds then i wouldnt worry about the noise!!!
sometimes the whirring is kind of like a wasp though, like its constantly making and then losing connection.... dunno if you've had that...

Good news indeed, and also a good reason to support our local model shop - if we are lucky enough to have a good one.
We all look for the cheapest price, but if we lose our local expertise it will be so much harder for those like me starting out in the hobby.
