Title: BR MK1 Coach Rakes
Post by: jd on January 22, 2013, 04:03:45 PM
Hi everyone I'm planing on running a seven and five coach rakes. I've looked around the net but I'm struggling to find coach formations, so I've come up with this formation for era 5 /6. So if I've missed anything or messed up please let me know.

Seven coach rake formation: (ecml)

BSK,SO,SO,FO,RU,CK,BCK. (BR Maroon)

Five coach rake formation:  (Hull to Manchester run)

SO,RMB,FO,CK,BSK (BR West Coast Chocolate & Cream)

Chocolate and Cream coaches in Hull  ??? >:D  :confused2: :veryangry: :help: :worried: :(

Very Very unlikely... I've only ever seen one photo of Choc+Cream (Western Region rather than West Coast BTW) anywhere near Hull and that was an Excursion of around 10 or 11 coaches to Butlins @ Filey from I think Birmingham area.

Hull - Manchester trains in your period would most likely be all Maroon and maybe include an odd ex LNER vehicle or two. A five coach set would most likely have a brake at both ends and I would expect only one vehicle with first class accomodation (usually towards the western end).
From the early 1960s services on the route were mostly taken-over by the purpose-built Trans-Pennine DMUs (later class 124).

Hi Paul thank you for comment. I forgot to say the idea with this was that I could use a class 45 as I like them. I've been researching and I know they where used on Transpennines  routes.  So getting back to my plan was to run the 45 with the c&c coaches as a special. And also as a normal service with BR maroon.

Hi Paul

I did some research a while back on a similar quest - I was looking at BR Western Region and Cross Country services for my layout rather than Eastwrn Region though. First off, I think your two rakes look pretty accurate. The only observation would be that it would be unusual to have a buffet (RMB) on a 5 coach train unless it was joining up with other coaches to form a longer train en route. As someone else pointed out, the chocolate and cream coaches tended to be limited to use on the top WR 'named trains' expresses, so unlikely to be found on excursions. Having said that I have a few of these and freely mix them up with maroon and even blue/grey MK1s for the late 60s/early 70s when the WR chocolate & cream named train practice fell by the wayside.

Here are some other rakes I found:

7 coaches:
Newcastle to Bristol: SO, RMB, FK, SK, SK, SO, BSK
Worcester to Paddington: SK, FK, RU, SO, BSK, CK, SK
Up Golden Hind: BFK, FK, RU, SK, SK, SK, BSK
Sheffield to Paignton: BG, SK, CK, SK, SK, BSK, Gresley RB!!!
Up Golden Hind: BSK, SK, SK, RU, FO, FK, BFK
7 coach inter-regional service: SK, SK, BSK, RMB, FK, SK, SK

I also throw in the odd GUV at one end, freely interchange corridor and open stock and replace FKs or FOs with RFOs if it is an 'express'

For 5 coach trains, they tended to be more second class focused and rarely had a restaurant or buffet car, typical would be: SK, SK, BSK, CK, SK or BSK, SK, SK, FK, SK. These smaller trains were often comprised of really old stock mixed in with MK1s

As ever, my suggestion would be to use modeller's licence to mix things up a bit as well as using the coaches you already have - after all who wants to spend more hard earned for not much more realism!

I hope this helps

Mike
