Title: Acrylic paint
Post by: jonclox on January 18, 2013, 11:37:05 AM
Ive been asked to repair a wooden toy that belonged to my sons and now my grandson.
A couple of bits will need repainting when its finished and the only paint the right colour that I have is a Tamiya Acrylic. It seems a waste to but a tin of paint for such a small touchup job but is it safe to use this when at times it might end up being sucked by youngstersand when dry will it be 'wash proof' oris there a way round the problems?

I just tested a spot of overspray on my layout that i used tamiya acrylics on, by licking my finger and trying to rub the paint off...

The paint came off - probably not the best paint then...

Humbrol enamals are very good when dry, just take a while to dry properly though

Just for the record, i've just switched to Tamiya acrylics as i've found them a lot easier to work with than humbrol and especially the awful revell paints. In this case though i think humbrol would be the best for the job.

Once you have completed all the repair and touching up with paint, you could always give it a coat of varnish that is safe for human consumption  ;)

cheers John.

Hi  Jon,

Cant be sure how  child  friendly Tamiya paints are  but   i  do know the thinners   are IPA  so   i  would imagine the paint will  have an element of IPA  in them.

It brought to mind using IPA as a thinner hence my  thread here

Back  to  your problem  i   tend to agree with 4X2   contact    Humbrol    to confirm  their paints are child friendly  http://www.humbrol.com/contact-us/ (http://www.humbrol.com/contact-us/)
&  use this paint conversion chartt to hopefully match   things  ;)

If it isn't biniding I'd start by cleaning the surfaces very carefully. There isn't any particular reason acrylic shouldn't bond as well as any other paints.

The only child safe paint brand I know of is International Paints.
I think B&Q, Wilko's etc... stock them.
