I agree with Merchant Navy.  They're wonderful looking loco's, and something I'd like on my rails.  Can it be converted to 3rd rail?!   :smiley-laughing:

Impossible to choose because I love em all, no matter what region all steam locos have a charm that other forms of motive power will never have, grew up with the LMS and visited other areas of the UK and enjoyed all locos regardless of what or where they were.

All I know is that British Steam is still King.

This is such a hard one.  Despite not growing up with Steam, I totally get the attraction (I had a close encounter with 5051 Drysllwyn Castle in 1983 at Newport that had a profound effect on me! :)

Castles are an obvious favorite, but I have to say, I think the lines of the Stirling Single GN No.1,  are just sublime.

I like all that other weird foreign stuff too  ;D ;D, and I confess a fondness for the Pennsy's odd experiments like the PRR S-1 and T-1 too

For me, it has to be these two:

London, Brighton and South Coast Railways 'A1' (Terrier)

and

Great Southern and Western (Ireland) '101' class (J15)

Its just a shame that only the first is available in N gauge!

My favourite is the Gresley streamlined A4 Pacific.  A fabulous bit of 1930s art deco design.  I love the original silver-grey livery like the Silver Link, but my most favourite has to be Mallard in bright blue as it holds the official speed record.  Must have been an impressive sight.

Definately the LNER A3 Pacific's. 'Flying Scotsman' being my favorite in Apple Green livery. It was pictures and old 00 hornby models of this engine when I was a kid that got me hooked on railways in general.

I own the minitrix and graham farish versions of this in N.

Second place goes to a 9F though....... I love these remarkable engines. :A1Tornado: :Carriage: :NGF:

Here goes by region. Eastern - V2 (proportionall perfect). Western - Castles and Kings. Southern - BoB/West Country pacifics (mesmeric slip issues!). Ugly but strangely attractive - the Q1. Midland - rebuilt Patriots, Scots and the standards - Britannias, 8F, 9F and class 5's.

Crumbs... it's probably a toss up between, on the LMS Garratts and Princesses, the Ivatt 4MT 2-6-0 - it has such character, and the 2-6-4Ts
On the LNER, it's probably the P2 or P1.
Southern? It has to be the Q1. Another engine with real character.
GWR... I'd have to say the big ol' 47xx like the 28xx... only turned up to 11. :) Oh, and the 2-10-2T that they didn't build. Like the 72xx on steroids... So I'll say the 72xx as well

That's a difficult but it would have to be Stroudley's Terriers with rebuilt Merchchant Navies as runner up. :  :A1Tornado:

I've already nominated 47XX 2-8-0s as my favourite but if I had to choose one for each region it would be :

GWR-47XX
SR - BB/WC (Rebuilt)
LMS - Crab
ER - B1
Standard - 9F

As i'm modelling a Cornish GWR branch, none of the above are appropriate to my layout !

oh dear, so many to choose from ! Im going to have to go through a short list :)

I guess I really like older smaller engines best, tank engines possibly with outside frames best of all.
the Sharp's single driver type is certainly high on my list. I especially like to see the various rebuilds, the GN had a number of them rebuilt into tank engines, which are very attractive.

Along similar lines the SE "Small Scotchmen" might take the prize.

Mansell's Gunboat class on the SE might also be the one.

I have often pondered this and I think the answer lies in what I would build in 1:10 scale if I had the beer tokens - 45565 "Victoria".  Slightly more beautiful than a Black 5 but not quite as hulking, brute strength of a Duchess - and can usefully be used on a range of model trains without looking silly.  Besides, I was born in Victoria!

LMSR Unrebuilt Patriot 5538 'Giggleswick' - the first 'namer' I ever recorded seeing sometime in the 1940's. Closely followed by Jubilee's, then most things ex-LNWR and ex-Midland. Biggest regret- - I never managed to see the last Claughton (LMSR 6004) which was one of the progenitors of my favourite Patriot - completing the circle.

For me it will always be the Duchess pacific - in maroon.

Way back in 1962 this young boy was taken loco spotting by his Dad.  The morning was spent at Euston.  The highlight was City of Coventry.  She had been cleaned within the last couple of days and looked magnificent.  She started the 14 maron coaches of the Lakes Express and stormed off up Camden Bank with no slipping.  Amazing.

Later that day a grinmy A4 at Kings X slipped and struggled with 11 coaches  into the tunnels.

Well such things leave an impression!

Nice vid that ! I've got a book called 'Complete railway modelling' published in 1982 with a great picture of that train 'Der Alder' (The Eagle). The train is powered by the first coach and the other two are fitted with pick ups - I've want one of these for years, but they go for silly money... :(

For sheer brute power, mine would be a Beyer Garratt 2-6-0 + 0-6-2.  So ugly, it's beautiful.  I know there is a white metal kit (Langley?) available, but I think it's a bit out of my skill set.  I'd be straight out with cash-card if anyone ever produces a RTR N gauge model. I notice that Hattons have details on their site of a forthcoming OO release, so I'll live in hope.

For me it has to be the Southern Schools, would love to have one on my layout, which is being revived after 30 years in boxes to keep me amused during retirement. Loosely based on Swanage (Terminus with a return loop) which is 30 mins away, I've started laying track which owing to space will have tighter curves than I would like. Stock will be Southern and GWR (had to have a 14xx and already had a Hall and Prairie).

Stanier Black 5 and/or Coronation Class Pacific "City of Carlisle"(another Stanier masterpiece)

A close third would be A4 "Union of South Africa" which one day appeared in Carlisle Canal Shed and caused lots of little boys on bicycles to peddle furiously all round the city ! :)

Just to be serious for a moment... If you've ever been in the first coach behind a great steam engine (lets say a S&D 7F) and stuck your head out of the window as the driver attacks a gradient at speed - it's a hell of a rush ! The same can almost be said of Diesels (let's say a western), the roar of the engines and the whistle of the turbos is also highly addictive - but what ruins it for the diesels is the smell ! I can't imagine ever getting emotional over diesel fumes ! The sound yes, but not the smell... ;D

The only challenging bit with the Garrett is reversing the gear on one end - and I am sure you could find someone at your local MRC who could do that for you.  The rest is straight forward (says he with 2!)

Yeah I'd agree with that. I've been building one recently that I acquired in a box of white metal kits. The spaghetti adjustment is fiddly and one or two other bits need some care in assembly but the rest is ok. The paint job is also not too hard, although I still need to number and varnish the one I've built.

No idea what I'm going to do with it, possibly run a highly "rule 1" preserved garrett (now wouldn't that have been the killer railtour....)

That actually doesn't look too hard - the centre of the mid section of the kit is hollow so there is plenty of room in there for a decoder feeding the two motors (and providing its sufficiently rated it will drive two at once although back EMF may be less effective). I think you'd get sound in with a speaker below the central section.

You certainly can get sound in. Although where you'd find the samples from I'm not sure. But yes, that's how it would be done.

I have read through the thread and my all time favourite loco has only been mentioned once.
When I were a lad (cue music) a Q1 visited Chichester and turned in the Y reversing siding, it has been my first love ever since......  Ugly ducklings have their own beauty!
Closely followed by the unrebuilt West Country, three down and three up every day, the only steam locos I saw.
However, probably the most beautiful loco built anywhere in the world has got to be Stanier's Duchess'.
I will now hide behind the sofa and await retribution! Be gentle, I'm a newbie!

So many to choose from. They are all great but perhaps my top 3 would be A4, Stirling Single and Tornado.

Thanks Poliss for that great video of Stephenson loco in N. Would love one of those!

The ultimate (sorry Tornado) was the 9F. I had a play on Evening Star when I was worker at Didcot back in the distant past. Pull on the regulator and you could feel the power, alas they only had 1/4 mile of running road in those days so it was a short lived dream.

Travelled around home a lot when I was a kid so I saw locos from the Big 4 in mail line action

Southern favorite was any of the Spam Cans.

LNER has to be the A4, saw Dominion of Canada cracking over 90mph.

Best GWR without a doubt Th Kings, was pulled by King James II from Snow Hill to London.

My home region is very difficult but I loved the Jubilees and Coronation Class locos that I used to spot on the Trent Valley line but my favorite was the original Fowler Patriot Class which I thought typified everything great about British Steam, regulars on our local line with the Jubilees.

My favorite is the LNER Mallard in Blue with Red Wheels. close runner in 2nd is the Silver Link. These are my childhood favorites and have not really changed much in all these years.

I have been perusing the replies and must admit that I love 'em all. But even though I have actually ridden on the footplate of A4 Sir Nigel, I must admit to having a total love of Class 55 Deltics, especially two-tone green. I don't recall which loco took me through the night of Aug 22 1974 from Durham to Kings Cross on my way to a life in Australia, but I'm betting it was a blue 55 class! They rule! Can't wait to get me hands on the Farish blue one.

And any train that has green livery gets my attention (green's my fave colour) hence why I own a Flying Scotsman (BR A3 class, 60103) and the B1 LNER 4-6-0 'Springbok'.

short answer, no.
the Wiki says the Schools have a rated Tractive Effort of 25,130lbs, which certainly is very large for a 4-4-0. But Baldwin built bigger ones for some of the US coal hauling roads.
For example, the Reading Co. Class D-11 had a huge Wooten firebox and 21"dia cylinders, giving a TE of 27,580lbs.
no one's favorite loco, Id hazard to guess !  those drivers look small under that boiler, they are  5'8" vs. the Schools' 6'8". The top of the stack is 14' above the rail. All in weight was 329,000 lbs ! almost half again what a Schools weighs.

Too many favourites! I do like the inevitible two - Flying Scot and Tornado. I also like the A4, but there's been a lot of other great British locos. I'm actually modelling around the early-ish BR period (basically from nationalisation up to BR blue days) and some of the things that existed around then are really quite nice!

Big respect for Steam. However, seeing as every time I try to drive one, they either misbehave and / or burn me, it's not quite the love I have for Diesels. It's defo a love though  :D

What can I say, I have a lot of time for things that I just start up and get to work.

However, Castle Class are absolutely stunning. I especially like the copper work, and have a soft spot for the way Gods Wonderful Railway used one example to show-up a certain Apple Green A3...cough 4472...cough.....

A ex GNR C12 4-4-2 tank engine. When I was a young lad growing up in Lincolnshire I knew a couple of the local engine drivers and firemen and was able to ride the footplate while they did the run around of the coaches to Mablethorpe or Grimsby. No health and safety issues in those days. I also got to shovel coal occasionally!

Not surprised to see so many streamliners listed ... I am (pleasantly so  :)) re the original P1 !
But I note that no-one has mentioned any of the three classes that had the A4 casings added ...

For me - it would have to be the Hush-Hush (original guise, not the W1 revamp).  Gorgeous engine, too ahead of her day.  Her steam plant got a lot of blame - but it lasted a hellova long time !  Shame they didn't take more time to sort out the bugs when fitted  :(

S&D 7F - I rode behind No88 on the West Somerset Railway last year... It was wet, the train was empty and it's mostly up hill out of Minehead - The driver opened her right up (25 mph my butt !  :-X) and the noise was incredible, every chuff felt like the air was being torn out of my lungs and i was in the first coach leaning out as you do... IT WAS AWESOME !

Anyway, that trip has stuck with me and every time this subject comes up i'll be chanting 7F, 7F, 7F etc... :heart2:

Regards Peter.

The Golden Arrow was hauled in the main by Bulleid Pacifics. Either the Battle of Britain/West Country or the Merchant Navy class. I think the odd Britannia class was also used ???

Probably GWR Heavy Freight (and mixed traffic as it happens) 47XX series.
Good call. Handsome, well-proportioned machines that just oozed power! I keep hoping we may see one frmo Dapol eventually since they have both the 3500-gallon churchward and 4000-gallon collett tender drives that these locos were paired with.

Failing the Castle comes a close second. I would love one of these to modern standards.

Just picked up this thread so need to say my favourite of all time would be the L&Y Pug. Oh to have one of those on my layout, DCC fitted, of course. A close second would be the ex-LMS Crab because it is ugly but a great workhorse (I have one of these.) Then I could wax on about other LMR locos, Scots, Patriots, Jubilees, Jinties etc with a special mention of the ugly Ivatt Class 4 2-6-0's and the charming Ivatt class 2 (looking forward to that one coming out soon.) But very high up in my list of favourites is the Adams 4-4-2 Radial tanks that used to work the Lyme Regis branch. I remember these from my childhood when the Oldham Battalion of the Boys' brigade used to go to camp in Lyme Regis the last week in June. We had five coaches attached to the overnight Olham Wakes special from Oldham (Clegg Street) to Bournemouth via Bath Green Park and the Somerset and Dorset. Our coaches were detached at Templecombe and worked down to Axminster where they were taken down the branch with two of the three surviving Adams tanks (always 30582 and 30584.) Although my layout is based on the LMR somewhere in the North West I would always find room for one of these if it came along.

To me, my first favourite must be the Peppercorn A1 - Tornado and my second favourite is the Terrier - Freshwater. But then, any steam locomotive is beautiful!

I love anything streamlined (Coronation class, A4, Battle of Britain, Milwaukee F7s etc) and although it's not British, I like the enormous, workmanlike American locomotives (Allegheny 2-6-6-6, Challenger 4-6-6-4 or Big Boy 4-8-8-4). I have a soft spot for oddball Bulleid stuff, especially the 'Leader' and come to think of it, other pretty Southern locos like the M7 tanks.

My very favourite locomotive is the elegant Schools class locomotive. I cannot wait for its release and I really hope we see a Maunsell green one as this is the livery which the Hornby O gauge one came in and that model looks so right compared to all the other inaccurate offerings of the time!!

From my formative years in the early 60's, initially being taken by my parents to the footbridge over the down yard of Wimbledon Station (and later pestering them to do so) early-ish on summer Saturday mornings to watch the likes of Bullied Pacifics (rebuilt MNs, WCs & BoBs originals and rebuilt) and Standard Class 7s hauling the holiday expresses to the West Country, these have to be my favourites.

The one main thing I learned from bitter experience which has come in useful photographing the preserved stuff is don't stand on the over-bridge directly over the running line unless you want to disappear in a cloud of steam, smoke and smuts.

The sad thing is that we didn't realize at the time that these were the twilight years of steam so didn't think to take a camera to record what seemed such an everyday event, then it all came to a halt - no more steam... sob, sob...

Regards to all

I like the Stirling 4-2-2 with its 8ft driving wheels, however the
possibility of an N gauge version is pretty remote.

I'm going to be boring and say the A4 Pacific Mallard. When I was young it was just the train. My best birthday present was the Hornby Mallard. Still got it, will never ever get rid of it.

No real favorite but I like small locomotives 0-4-0,  0-6-0, 0-4-2, to me they have the cute appeal that is missing on express passenger engines.

Being a blue with yellow ends man myself the kettles below are my favourite

Yep, gotta agree. Some people might think that the best steamer would be the last one to be condemed, removed from the network and scrapped, but my all time favourite kettle is the one I use to boil the water when making a pot of tea.  :D

Time to retire to the bunker.

I'm like that with my OO Hornby Flying Scotsman train set from about 20-odd years ago which languishes at my Dad's house...

And just think if Network Rail have their way all the 3rd rail stuff will be following soon.

http://www.rssb.co.uk/sitecollectiondocuments/pdf/reports/research/T950_rb_final.pdf (http://www.rssb.co.uk/sitecollectiondocuments/pdf/reports/research/T950_rb_final.pdf)

has the summary

"The conclusion of this research is that replacement of the 750V DC system with 25kV AC appear s to be both feasible and economically desirable. The economic case is likely to improve as energy costs increase over time. "

And since 3rd rail units don't run without third rail there may well be steam on the mainline network long after any 3rd rail has been relegated to museums or battery packs.

Lovely picture of Barry as it was though - all gone now, just a last few locos going off to preservation and a proposal to keep one preserved but frozen in the Barry state so people in future can understand a little of the scale of what was involved

Rust greets time, a grave to steam
in mire gloom, to no more gleam
Does care die, quiet and scarred
Berry red in Barry yard ?

Rusted steel, at rest dust all
old sump oil , lead is my pall
long rather, to linger there
Cold my fire, once called me fair

Who knows now, when I was new
Speed in flow, and on I flew
I turned eyes, to run and see
In steam, a dream, adore me

YES!  I had a "OO" kitbuilt one made by a friend that I wept over selling when moving to the "dark side", and will never forget it pulling long fast freight trains.

Incidentally, now that you have your 38XX, has the stressful waiting period left your conscious?  I'm now wondering if we have to face the same pain awaiting the Bachmann "Castle"!!!   Is there no end to this agony?!

All the proper decent stuff has already gone - it's only 'plastic' around now. The last VOP units were recently taken away, for reusing parts on the 5-BEL trusts Brighton Belle, leaving only Gordon Pettitt (4-VEP) as the only Mk1 derived unit on the southern.

Not quite - they can still run on non-elelctrified lines; just diesel hauled or propelled as here from a few weeks back on a non-electrified line;
