Title: Drs and network rail coaches
Post by: Paulwhitt20 on November 07, 2018, 09:15:01 PM
Farish have made one coach in the DRS and Network Rail livery, what other coaches would be used to make up a rake? Not much use only having one coach out of a rake. Does anyone know if farish are making the rest of the coaches to make a proper rake? What would that be ?
Thanks

The DRS coach is the Courier coach used with Nuclear fuel trains. It is the only passenger vehicle in the "proper rake". The rest of the rake should be flask wagons...

Thanks, interesting. Who traveled in the courier coach then?

Officially I don't know who's in that carriage, Unofficially I  don't know who's in that carriage.

But then I don't want to look down the barrel of something that fires metal at you, to prevent you interfering with nuclear stuff...

There's a picture of the coach in a flask train here:

It runs with KUA flask wagons that are used for naval nuclear fuel (very different design to the FNA used for power station traffic and produced by Farish some time ago).

There's a good write up of a scratch build of the KUAs in OO Gauge here:

So far as I recall those coaches run one either end of a train of flasks carrying submarine fuel (don't think these flask wagons have been made in model form?). They carry armed guards - the flasks contain enriched uranium which is considered a far higher risk than the more usual flask trains which carry used fuel elements from power stations.

Not looked at what the model actually is - DRS replaced the original Mk2a coaches with newer Mk2 E or F ones not that long ago.

You can get a 3D print of an IQA here (http://modernimagemodels.co.uk/page10.html), which is closer to the KUA than the FNA.

Thanks, so back to the origional question, why make the charter coach if they don't make the flasks to go with it?

Anyway rule number one. I can stick a coach on a set of FNA flasks with a Drs 37 or 66 to make a more interesting train.

Probably because the coach can just be done using an existing tooling, whereas the flask would require developing a completely new model - and given how few of this type of flask there is, it's probably not worth their while.

ISTR that I have seen a 3d printed model - might be worth a trip to shapeways? ( I saw them at Corsham - see URL 2)

And NGF comes up trumps with a 3D KUA flask wagon thread!
