Title: N gauge complete beginner in Bucks seeks help
Post by: nicksharding on November 25, 2018, 05:23:14 PM
Complete beginner.  Never had a train set before, just acquired an N gauge layout which is complete with two tracks and lots of points etc.
I have not got a clue as to how to get it going, where I attach a power supply, how it all works and what sort of trains I should buy for it (DCC?).
More than happy to pay someone to come and help me get it going?  Advise me on what to buy and then install it for me etc etc.
I live outside Newport Pagnell.
Thanks   Nick.

Firstly, welcome.

Secondly, see if you can get some photos posted up on here. It's probably a better starting point for info. rather than asking someone to come and help you out.

;)

Welcome aboard.
Does your layout come complete with controller?
If so, if you can describe that it'll be a big start.

Can I recommend you remove your phone number, the forum has a reliable Personal Messaging system and your number is exposed to web spiders and the like.

Have you contacted the N Gauge society Im sure they have Cambridge/Bedford local club coverage that might be close enough to you.

Welcome tod the NGF - fount of all knowledge, wisdom, and a healthy dose of everything else!

1) local model railway clubs can be found here

http://www.ukmodelshops.co.uk/other/clubsheader.php (http://www.ukmodelshops.co.uk/other/clubsheader.php)

2) also,local shops
http://www.ukmodelshops.co.uk/counties/modelShops (http://www.ukmodelshops.co.uk/counties/modelShops)

3) and MR shows - see how others dip it!

http://www.ukmodelshops.co.uk/events/local (http://www.ukmodelshops.co.uk/events/local)

These are usually run by local clubs and a Good starting point for local info.

An overhead photo of track layout or drawing wouldn't be useful, also of the controller if any.

Also a picture of the layout underside if possible.

Are there any wiring attached to the track already ( a pair of wires emerging from the side or bottom layout? )

G'day from Australia, Nick, and welcome to the NGF!

I think that Railwaygun means a photo of the track layout would be useful, rather than wouldn't!

I'm a complete beginner too but I've been working on my layout for nearly a year now and have encountered all manner of problems to which I can offer some solutions and some things to be wary of or avoid. Good luck - it can be frustrating at times but great fun and hours of enjoyment.
