At long last a Gold for Team GB.

Well done ladies, hope your example is reflected throughout the rest of the team.

We also beat Brazil in the soccer (despite missing a penalty). I know that there is a long way to go before a medal can be considered but beating Brazil is a hell of an achievement whether it is in mens or womens football.

Statistically speaking - ladies(?) hockey is one of the most dangerous sports played! Second only to Equestrian among the Summer Olympic events!

Tell me about it. I used to go to a mixed school in my yoof and we had to play hockey against the girls. By heck, they were vicious :o No talk of 'the fairer sex' there - they would just flatten you by any means, fair or foul :P

Well done England hope you get a whole lot more, some thrilling finishes in the Rowing and 10,000 Meter Run.

We have gone from being a team who might/ought to get a medal to being the team to beat in certain disciplines - and we have consistently delivered the performance required in these events!

After decades of being the gallant losers that came fourth or had some hard luck stories we are now winners. Absolutely brilliant - so proud of them and proud to be a Brit.

Looked at the medal table and shocked to see our great rivals, the Aussies, so far down. Although I don't want them to beat the Brits, I hope they can return to form in the second week and get a gold or two.

The Aussies are sore losers officialy (with humblest apologies to Australian members here of course  ;) ). The Sydney Morning Herald has cleverly, but foolishly combined their own Medal Table with that of New Zealand (who are ahead by virtue of having 3 Golds, against Australia's 1), and stuck that on the medal table under the name Aus Zealand (I kid you not!)

Of course, this is considered an absolute outrage on this side of the Tasman, in fact as a news story is second only to the two New Zealand soldiers killed in Afganistan this week. This is not the first time Australia has tried to claim the glory of a New Zealand victory, quoting Auckland's New Zealand Herald, "After Australia was smashed 4-0 by Germany at the 2010 Football World Cup and New Zealand claimed a historic draw with Slovakia, the Sydney Morning Herald's headline read "Australasia 1 - Slovakia 1".". See pic below:

For the record, New Zealand currently holds 3 Gold and 4 Bronze Medals, with Australia holding the balance.

You can see what the New Zealand Herald had to say about this here: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/news/article.cfm?c_id=4&objectid=10825019 (http://www.nzherald.co.nz/sport/news/article.cfm?c_id=4&objectid=10825019)

They really are soare losers. And stealing another countries glory is very poor sportsmanship in my books.
That's why I have no sympathy for those 'whinging Aussies' who pretty much claimed they would win everything with their 'world class' athletes. Looks like the kiwis and Brits should give them some swimming lessons. ;)

My friend in Australia says the media are absolutely furious with the Aussie swimmers for their poor performances, they were expecting a lot of golds because swimming is like a religion in Australia.

They came out with several excuses including :

1) Social media
2) The other swimmers were using illegal kicks
3) All the best Australian coaches were being paid to coach other country's swimmers
4) The Australian coaches are too soft

Meanwhile saw these on twitter yeaterday :

BREAKING NEWS: Unconfirmed reports circulating that Australia's Olympic team is due to arrive in London a week on Monday.

Hey kids, spelling is important. Look! The difference between won and one: Great Britain have just won gold. Australia have just one gold.   :D

The trouble is they didn`t have long enough to become acclimatised. It take ages to get used to standing the other way up and trying to get used to the revesed direction of gravity that we have in the northern hemisphere

As a Brit living in Australia, I have to say I am enjoying seeing the Australians not doing so well almost as much as I'm enjoying seeing the Team GB successes. I've said for a long time that Aussies are bad losers and ungracious winners - you get the impression that the other competitors are just there to mkake up the numbers. (If Australia wins, they're the best. If Australia lose, they had a bad day.)

I have to bite my tongue, because SWMBO is Australian . . . but she doesn't complain about modelling BR, so life isn't all bad  :D

I'm very much of the same opinion. I personally don't care too much who wins and loses, I'm just enjoying watching it all unfold. I do however, like many New Zealanders take exception to the Australians taking credit for win's they had absolutely no responsibility for, and claiming our Gold's as belinging to Greater Oceania.

Well, they don't!

New Zealand athletes won the Golds for New Zealand, and themselves. Not for Australia, Australasia, Oceania, or Aus Zealand for that matter! The only input Australia had in our Gold's was that they didn't win those same events, and we did! :veryangry:

Grump over  :thankyousign:

The major problem is the media put that Aussie sportsmen on a pedestal when they are doing well, as soon as they start loosing the bring them down like a ton of bricks, for that reason I feel sorry for the blokes and girls that train so hard to achieve success.

It is true in some cases the Aussies can be poor losers and I have seen and heard it in this games but for every bad sport there is still another that is gracious in defeat.

I just wish all sportsmen were as good in defeat as Roger Federer when he was beaten by Andy Murray in the tennis, a true gentleman and great sportsman.

Being an Englishman I am having a ball watching England climb the medal ladder but not as much as I like to see any team on the planet beat them in the cricket, now that is what I call a real pack of moaners.

That is utterly absurd......frankly if i was an Aussie i would be seriously embarrassed by that :hmmm:
It's like the Manchester Evening News or the Liverpool Echo putting their teams name in with the other teams name......depending on who was top of the league.
Liverpool United.....Manchester Pool......anyone...? ???

I was starting to feel sorry for the Aussies until I saw Kaiwhara's comment!

However the thread is about GB gold so congrats to Andy Murray on his win (and I agree with the comments about Roger Federer. He is a truly great sportsman.)

Righto you lot!
Stop whining about us whinging  :D that said on tv today one station went to the length of using medal tally vs population, the best we could do was forth, it had no up as first but I think that might of been wrong as I don't think it is real country :P :P
Anyway as has been said our media and the sponsor make them to be better then they are and when they get the big sponsor dollars or mag money like Rice and co, they forget what themy are supposed to be doing, that's swim that's win because it's my tax dollar that is paying for their lifestyle they choose. They should be setting examples to my kids in leadership, sportsman like behavior but they are off the rails. At work I have to improve productivity and performance(not sure how that works in fire fighting maybe need to use less water who knows) but in the real world they be looking for a new job going by the way some of them behave.
Anyway have to go prepare for the next plane load of kiwis who want to be Australian hahahaha

Looked at the medal table and shocked to see our great rivals, the Aussies, so far down.

The trouble is they didn`t have long enough to become acclimatised. It take ages to get used to standing the other way up and trying to get used to the revesed direction of gravity that we have in the northern hemisphere

:laughabovepost:  :D :D

Well I don't agree. The kiwis got acclimatised real quick. That's why they got more golds

Being an Englishman I am having a ball watching England climb the medal ladder

Being a Scotsman I would like to remind you it is Team Great Britain not Team England.  :telloff:

The BBC used to be notorious for their commentary when the English won anything they were always referred to as English, if the Scots, Irish or Welsh won they were always referred to as British.  :veryangry:

Possibly the only good thing to emerge from this PC world we live in is this is now not the case as it is frowned upon the presenters even apologise and correct themselves if they slip up.

New Zealand athletes won the Golds for New Zealand, and themselves. Not for Australia, Australasia, Oceania, or Aus Zealand for that matter! The only input Australia had in our Gold's was that they didn't win those same events, and we did! :veryangry:

Following the successes in Beijing, the rest of the world forced changes to the type of races to be run in the Olympics in an attempt to stifle British dominance.
They have singularly failed as Team GB has just adapted to those changes and thrashed the rest of the world big time

Don't count your chickens yet everyone. Team GB have 22 well earned golds, however the Russian Federation are now finding form on 10 gold medals earning 6 of those in the last few days.

If I recall, the Russians pipped team GB to the post for 3rd position in Beijing.

There are still 5 days left...........

Hope team GB hold 3rd spot or even some how threaten the USA for 2 nd place.

Good luck team GB :claphappy:

That's alright. Because Team GB are good sports, they will let NZ 'embrace' British gold medals meaning a combined total of 25 Golds compared to a paltry 4 for Australia. This now means NZ are third in the table, well above Australia for a second time in the competition. ;) :D

I don't see any controversy there. The Olympics is a massive commercial branding event, so having one particular sponsor's brands whizzing around in the stadium isn't exactly an issue.

This is an issue though: http://www.ethicalconsumer.org/commentanalysis/corporatewatch/thegreatolympictaxswindle.aspx (http://www.ethicalconsumer.org/commentanalysis/corporatewatch/thegreatolympictaxswindle.aspx)

BMW are one of the companies that have caved in to public pressure and said they won't be using it as a chance to dodge paying any UK tax, but there's still a lot of sponsors using the dodge.

It has been a phenomenal performance both in terms of the organisation and the performance of the team.

I was trying to think who was the UK standout performer of the Games and it is an impossible task. How can you separate Ainslie, Hoy, Kenny, Farah, Murray, Wiggins etc or Ennis, Pendleton, Dujardin, Trott etc for the girls. And there are probably more that I haven't mentionned that have exceeded expectations just to get past the heats of some events.

Lets hope our boxers can do the biz this afternoon!

I completely ran out of superlatives over a week ago regarding the performances of the entire Team GB who have played their hearts out.
The only disappointing thing for me is the organisers seem to have created an air of anti-climax for the Paralympics. I realise there is always an end of show extravaganza but it leaves a bit of a sour taste in my mouth that guys & gals will be doing their utmost for medals next week, and their achievements (to me, at least) will be equal to or above what has occurred over the last 2 weeks

I think there has to be some kind of the break as it takes a while for the athletes, equipment etc to leave the olympic village and return to their repective countries.

They can't all be expected to leave overnight and then for all the Paralympians to move in.
