:hellosign: njee20 It's an amazing place there is everything you can think of connected with railways from buttons ,uniforms ,track diagrams ,time tables railway furniture ,models in several scales  The old Henley on Thames Wooden Booking Office a small real station ,a signal box ,a pair of ploughing engines ,and various parts of old stations around the grounds so much more that I can't remember it was a long time ago when I was lucky enough to visit with my late mate Cyril. The little tank engine really struggles up the hill with two wagons loaded with people  when it rains it has to be pulled up by a bulldozer .The late Bill Mc Alpine was thinking of running Flying Scotsman there but allthough a clever man he didn't think of the incline out of the valley.

I have written to Farley Hill, asking for 2019 dates.

I'm certain we will have room for Rabbit's friends and relations!

The N Gauge Forum has a group of 20+ who would like to visit Farley Hill.

Please let me know when you have agreed  the 2019 visiting dates so that we can suggest a suitable date for our members.

Post by: Railwaygun on October 25, 2018, 12:25:58 AM
Fawley Hill have replied to me:

Thank you for your enquiry regarding a visit to the late Sir William McAlpine's Fawley Hill Railway and Museum near Henley-on-Thames.

We are now able to advise dates for club group bookings (see attached flyer).

Fawley VIP Days are run by the independent Fawley Museum Society and admission is by pre-booked invitations only as the museum has a daily limit of 350 people.

Please can you advise your estimated group size and your 1st and 2nd choice of dates as soon as possible. We are experiencing heavy demand for invitations particularly following the screening on TV of 'The Great Model Railway Challenge' that was filmed at Fawley, so are expecting the dates to fill up rapidly.

There is no admission fee for our invitation running days but we would ask your group to provide a suggested minimum donation of £10 per person.

i have created a poll, and ask people to vote ASAP for 2 dates.

I will ask for the 2 most popular days and reserve 20 (or as needed) places.

I'm open to suggestions about an alternative approach!

Somehow in the mayhem that is currently our life (I won't bore you with the details), I missed this thread.

I would love to add my name to the list please (if not too late), I'm in North Oxfordshire. My father and mother went last year, I think, shortly before McAlpine passed away. My father had dealings with him through Wolverton Works.

Hi all,

I must admit I found being at Fawley Hill very depressing....

All that stuff just sitting around waiting for someone to take on it's restoration - a great shame.

Just hope that a good outcome is found for both the place and the stock, fixtures and fittings and that one mans dream can be fulfilled in some way.

Thanks

Great news to brighten the day!

Could we change the thread title to reflect the new date please. My old brain might see me turning up on the 20th! :o

To save a three hour+ trip down from north of Boston I'll be setting out on the Friday and staying closer, probably near Brackley.  If anyone needs a lift along my route from there and back on the Saturday, let me know. (I'm happy to make slight detours off the A43, M40)

Looks like a good lunch/tea venue Nick.

Yes, that's the most likely route, a road I've travelled many a time, with the A418 through Aylesbury a highlight . Thought I'd overnight Friday near Henley, but........  it's the Henley Festival weekend! Cue the doubling or tripling of accommodation costs. :'( Another rethink needed. :hmmm:

Last night, sleepless as ever, I did wonder if it might be quicker to go north to Humberside Airport, fly down to Heathrow, then hire a car to Fawley Hill! :D

Thanks for the kind offer, but never a serious option, and I've just checked prices and flights :(

£231 return is current cheapest with a flight time of over 3 hours! That's due to a stopover for flight transfer in Amsterdam! :o

Think I'll drive and stop over with family half way - unless they're all on holiday, gone to the GP, or gone boating on the Thames, of course. :D

Think I'll drive and stop over with family half way - unless they're all on holiday, gone to the GP, or gone boating on the Thames, of course. :D

Would it not be easier, and less stressful to just get up early and drive on the morning...? Isn't it only 3 hours did you say?

That would make a long tiring day for me. Health issues can tend to make three hour drives a bit of an issue for me in the following days.

Re signing up, by mentioning here you'd like be included will mean Railwaygun will probably have added you to the list, but drop him a PM to be sure.

From memory Henley in the season of boats and boaters is bursting with visitors, booked solid for accommodation, and eateries and drinkeries are usually packed. I'd recommend somewhere north of Fawley to avoid the congestion.

I have also asked re facilities ( loos, coffee ). The site may Be difficult for anyone with a disability.

Lunch at the pub is optional and we can all meet at Fawley at 2pm I hope.

reply from Fawley

Hi Nicholas,

Thank you for your update on your group's numbers.

The attached flyer will hopefully provide the answers to most of your questions. Note that the station still has it's original loos (including a large slate wall-type urinal) although there are others in the museum itself.

We prefer donations to be paid in advance with a single payment per group as we don't like having to ask our gate supervisors to handle large sums of cash.

The museum is a private collection so unfortunately we are not able to register it as a charity.

Regards

Mark & Helen

The N Gauge Forum has a group of 26 , and we are planning to arrive at 2pm, by car ( not a charabanc).

Can we make donations on the day? ( £10 suggested ).

Are you a charity. Ie can you reclaim the tax? (Always worth looking into.)

What time do you close? Any visitor facilities ( loos, coffee/ tea etc).?

We are all looking forward to the trip ( and the forthcoming Series 2 )

suggested arrival is 130.

how do people want to handle prepayment?

1) could we contribute to NGF and NGF then pays Fawley?

2) I could prepay, and then you send me the ££ (paypal preferred) or bank transfer

3) any other suggestions??

I am on the original list but will have to drop out.  It is the weekend before our 50th wedding annivbersary and I am required for party preparations.  I will try for next year.

Alan

I reported back in April that I would have to drop out because of my 50th wedding anniversary commitments

I have builders in at the moment so not so quick on the uptake as normal - I'm out of country from 6th to 13th June so can it wait until my return?

Unfortunately, due to circumstances beyond my control, we will have to give it a miss. @Railwaygun (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=941) We have visitors booked in.

Small detail noted by my brother about the lunch venue - it's not open until 12:00.🙁

QuoteOpening Hours

Tues to Sat 12.00 to 3.00 Food served 12.00 to 2.15

I suggest we meet there around 11:45 to allow for delays driving on a busy Saturday so we are all ready to storm the dining room as it opens.

With a crowd of us eating it possibly means we would be arriving a little later than 1:15 at Fawley.

N.B. It will be a particularly busy weekend on the roads, with numerous events around the country such as Henley Regatta, British Grand Prix, major air displays and many many others. Route planning is a must, so allow plenty of time for your journeys.

I can't avoid High Wycombe as that's where I live .
The only thing to be carefull of is Handy Cross roundabout which is the junction of the M40 and the A 404 you need to WATCH WHAT LANE you get in ,traffic does some times get a bit hectic but it should be OK  on Saturday as there won't be many people on their way to work ,it's mainly a problem in the morning and evenings on a weekday .
Looking forward to meeting you all .
Make sure you print out the two forms that Railwaygun put on his post ,NO FORMS MEANS NO ENTRY .
Dont forget your Forum badges with your names on so we know who's who .
Mind you I think by now everyone knows me .

Due to time constraints Jim and I have decided to go straight to Fawley Hill, and not to the pub for lunch.

I have the completed signature / disclaimer form filled out for entry but do I actually need two of them? Hope not as I'm at Jim's and his printer is kaput!

Several examples were rebuilt with cut-down cabs for working on the Burry Port & Gwendraeth Valley Line, as there were several low bridges on the line that precluded the use of normal height locomotives.

The modified examples were nos. 03119, 03120, 03141, 03142, 03144, 03145, 03151, 03152 and late addition 03382

Their duties included shunting at Burry Port  and hauling full coal trains down from the valley's pits. For this latter duty they sometimes worked triple-headed

Great day! Thanks to Nick R for organising.

I shall post a couple of my lowly pics tomorrow, though brother Jim and I are already pictured amongst those already posted. We had arrived early and didn't know we were on the same train ride as other members, some of whom we met later.

Fawley Hill is only open to invitees five times a year according to one of the guides/volunteers I spoke to, though its simple to get an invite - just go to the website and ask for entry, or email them. Numbers limited to 500 apparently, with today's tally being somewhere around 400 I was told.

Well worth the visit, the exhibits being numerous and varied, even eclectic, with some superb models in many scales and gauges. And for wildlife lovers there are Red Kites circling overhead, Alpacas amongst the trees, Peacocks calling, ducks and geese fleeing from the ever-passing train load of humans, and occasional deer flitting from pasture to woodland.
