Dear Friends,

Has anyone tried Seuthe No. 3-14 Steam Generator, which is meant for n scale locos ?

https://www.ebay.com/itm/Seuthe-Nr-3-14-Dampfgenerator-fur-Spur-N-Lokomotiven-NEU/252443222609?hash=item3ac6c9e251:g:fa8AAOSwoLFehzPz

I have been thinking of using them in one of my locos.

Wanted to see anyone has tried it before.

Thx a lot everyone and please be safe.

Cheers,

Ajith

Looks a bit long for our locos, but difficult to tell. I saw some examples at a model boat show some years ago that just used water, rather than oil. I've never seen them and didn't make a note of their name.
The years have been good to me, it was the weekends that did the damage.

I dunno, but to me that looks suspiciously like it's just the element  and you'd still need a reservoir for the smoke fluid?

Especially given the description
ist ein Spur N Dampferzeuger zum Einbau direkt in den Vorratsbehälter.

translates as
is a N gauge steam generator for installation directly in the storage tank.

I have a couple of the old Arnold steamers with a Seuthe smoke unit comprising an integrated element and reservoir.  Seuthe's web page also makes me think that ebay listing is just the heating element and pipe

Could you please share the details of the Arnold steamers you have ? Model number ? Picture ?

Thx a lot in advance. :)

I have an Arnold #0251 (later #2511) BR 41 Reichsbahn loco with smoke generator.

Details and photos here:

I was wrong about my other one (lower), it's #2512 BR 41 DB and doesn't have smoke (but could have a generator fitted).

That definitely looks like it's just the element.

I have a Seuthe unit installed in a factory chimney. I can't remember the part number, but from what I recall (installation was a long time ago), it would have been too big for N, it was probably a HO unit.

I have an Arnold #0251 (later #2511) BR 41 Reichsban loco with smoke generator.

Thank you very much. I will look into that. Did it come factory installed or you did it by yourself.

Thx :)

It will be easy to install in a building. The space inside a n scale loco is the challenge. Thx :)

Factory fitted smoke.  Arnold were selling these way back in the early - mid 70s (mine has the old number #0251 dating from that time).

The smoke generator #7390 was a separate catalogue item and easy to upgrade into  #2512 if desired.

The models appear regularly on ebay.

Arnold made just two classes with factory-fitted smoke generators: the BR 41 and the BR 18.
Article numbers 0251/2510/2511 (BR 41), and 2536–39, 2542–44, 2547, 2549–57, 2599 and 71001/71002 (BR 18) should have one.

The Ibertren locomotives BR 66 and BR 92 were also available with smoke generators (NB: There are versions with and without them).

And more recently from Minitrix, 16186 (BR 18.6) also had smoke.

Were there any more models with factory-fitted smoke?

Ajith, if you try to retrofit a smoke generator, be aware that the smoke unit gets very hot once the smoke oil has been used up (it lasts just a few minutes), and then can melt plastic. So not every locomotive is suitable, even if there is ample space inside the boiler.

Yes, an advantage of the old metal bodied Arnold locos.  They're a bit dated now compared to modern models, but still run well and thunder their way round a layout with plenty of pulling power :D

A short clip of my old loco in action. (no sound).

The clip is actually slowed a little from the original, the layout was at a show and we were running a little fast to warm up the heating element and demonstrate the smoke to some watching kids  :D

if use with DCC make sure the decoder can switch off the output to the smoke unit .
unless the smoke unit is kept topprd up .
(my HO Big Boy from Athern (DCC sound Factory fitted) has 2 Seuthe No 10's fitted
and once oil has been used starts to warm up , as there is no way to turn power off
to the smoke unit)

Loco not tender powered; better and more durable than many newer models, just picked one up on eBay Arnold Spur N 2511 Steam locomotive BR 41 001 for just under £100 (109 Euros) from Germany.
Hope i didn't pay too much but real steam from the funnel sounds like a lot of fun. :}
Fingers crossed that it does have a smoke generator fitted as standard.
