The 'Steam Railway' magazine issue 495 July-August 2019 has a photo of a J15 with the brake van being an LNER Thompson  52' non-corridor BS-available as Ultima/Etched Pixels kit.

Location North Elmham; photo believed to date from 1960.

Another Mk1;

North Elmham again, train is J15 0-6-0, mk1 BG, one tank.

Dr I Allen photo E2190, Transport Treasury Publishing, included in 'Steam on the Great Eastern Norfolk and Suffolk', editor A Butcher.

Photo is B+W, undated, BG is single colour (ie not c+c), lined, so possibly maroon? Loco withdrawn 6/60, so photo obviously pre-dates that.

I think you are right (without seeing the picture) that it would be Maroon.
The few MK1 BG painted in overall Crimson (three batches from new for Eastern and Western Regions) were unlined as we're the Southern Green repaints.
