I nearly got one (Dirt Devil Scorpion plus) from the enemy (Amazon) in frustration before realizing that it would be imported and 120v!
I actually need it for proper cleaning on stairs and awkward areas, but I'm sure it will also find its way around hobbies.

Were the heck can I get a handheld, mains 230v, corded vacuum cleaner, that's decent quality with a reputable brand name, that's that actually in stock?

Try looking at what Dyson offer, good build and readily available spares if needed but not corded.
