All going well i shall be going to Miniatur Wunderland at the start of February, I'm looking for any advise previous visitors could give please ? Especially on the hotel packages on offer, what one did you stay in, was it worth taking the behind the scenes tour etc?

I'm really after any info at all apart from details about the actual "layout" as i want to take all that in when I'm there. Advice on getting about to / from Miniatur Wunderland and perhaps other things to do in Hamburg with the Family? We will be going for a long weekend.

All I can really say is be prepared for it to be busy and allow plenty of time to get around The display.
We spent 4 hours there and could easily have doubled that.
It's a lovely City well worth a walk around and along the river and a visit to the port (you can walk for miles along the waterfront there).
We stayed at the Gastwerk Hotel (unsurprisingly an old renovated Gas Works) which was great but some way (an hours walk) outside of town.
Enjoy your visit. It's well worth it.
I'll get round to fixing it drekkly me 'ansome.

Sorry can't offer much advice about the hotel packages as I traveled up from Dusseldorf for a day trip when I went. Made for a long day but wasn't a difficult journey, plus I got to ride on some interesting 1:1 scale models  ;)

I got the train into the main Hamburg Hbf which is well worth a visit in it's own right as it's a very impressive place to watch trains. From there the metro to the nearest station (Baumwall on line U3). The walk from the nearest metro station is well signed if I remember correctly but if not just follow the crowds, it's a very popular attraction.
I don't speak German but don't remember any problems buying metro tickets or finding my way.

One note of caution, it was very cold in Hamburg when I went (mid-January). It was bitter and snowing in Hamburg but further south in Dusseldorf it was wasn't that cold, just drizzly so it was a bit of a shock.

Enjoy your trip.

Hi there,

I went in April last year.  It was really interesting and enjoyable.  It was fairly busy but I was easily able to see everything I wanted to see.

I can't recall where I stayed in Hamburg but it was about a 20 minute walk from the attraction.  Hamburg itself is a lovely city with plenty of other things to do and enjoy - I thought the art gallery was very good.

Cheers

Railwaygun

there are a number of low cost hotels along the tram/metro lines and travel is resonable

https://geofox.hvv.de/jsf/mapsOSM.seam?language=en

there are 1 day or 5 day passes available (click on Tickets icon

also the tourist office

the MW is on several floors - the TEEs transfer by lift! there is a busy coffee shop inside - others in surrounding streets

local model shops

have fun!

PS take a CC/DC from Metro or other provider with zero Euro surcharge - saves money!

Can't remember the name of the hotel, but it was out at the racecourse. Had to get train in.

But Minatur Wunderland is awesome and I would happily go back again, especially with the new Venice scene.

I described my visit in Bealman's Euro Adventure a few years back.

We went on a Christmas cruise, so again no hotel details - sorry.

When we went you had to buy a ticket for an entry time slot to make sure the place was not flooded all at once, so we arrived, bought a ticket for entry an hour later, and sat and had a coffee and cake before going in. Then we spent longer than we expected to in the visit - about 3 hours in all, and could easily have been longer.
You can dump your bags and coats in the cloakroom for another fee, but well worth it - or you wont feel the benefit when you leave.

If you wander around the nearest train stations and see the sights, you can then go and see them all in model form.

The ticket thing could easily catch you out, and I can also vouch that Hamburg in winter is FREEEEEEEZING COLD :)

Hamburg is great to walk around, and its all within easy walking distance. St Michael's Lutheran church is also fantastic. It has something like four different organs. http://www.st-michaelis.de/service/

Craig,

Miniatur Wunderland is Wunderbar!!

I would go onto their website and prebook your tickets, Mrs C and & I have been twice now and make a beeline for it pretty much every time we visit our daughter in Paderborn.

We've stayed in a Best Western Hotel https://www.booking.com/hotel/de/hhinternationalbestwestern.en-gb.html?aid=304142;label=gen173nr-1FCAEoggI46AdIM1gEaFCIAQGYAQm4AQbIAQzYAQHoAQH4AQyIAgGoAgM;sid=be32e5f6291421887a4cd35a9762ca69 which is 2 -3 minutes walk from Rauhes Raus U-Bahn station, 10-15 minute ride into Hamburg HBf, then on U3 to Baumwall Station, then 5 - 10 minute walk to Miniatur Wunderland itself.

Our first visit took about 5 hours to complete including a couple of Coffee stops and a very reasonably priced lunch, including a beer or 2  ;) ;) our 2nd visit was longer as we had our 5 year old grand-daughter with us, who had to press every single action button in the place  :D :D

Would I go again?? in a heartbeat  :laugh3: :laugh3: :laugh3: and we will do before my family get posted back to blighty.

Enjoy your trip, you'll love it.

Cheers

Neal.

It's been a couple of year since we were there, and we stayed in the St Georg area overlooking the lake and and about a 10 minute stroll from the main railway station (also the route took us past a model railway shop).
We took the UBahn out to Baumwall  Station, from there a short walk to MW. We spent the entire day there and could easily have spent two, and I believe it has been extended since then.
There is a great restaurant on site so don't worry about grub (or beers) but if you are staying in St Georg I cannot recommend https://www.portugiese-hamburg.de/ enough, the food was amazing.

I've been twice. The best advice I can give is to book your ticket online in advance. Do not turn up unbooked otherwise you are likely to be in a long entry queue. Aim to get there as soon as it opens in the morning, it fills up fairly quickly. The behind the scenes tour is worth taking. The English tour has to be booked in advance. The cafe on site is good for a reasonable lunch. Everyone in your party will enjoy the visit, even if they are not model railway enthusiasts. It's been aching feet that's terminated our visits.

Any hotel in central Hamburg should be fine, so use Trivago or whatever to find something that suits you. I've stayed in the Radisson by the Dammtor station. It's easy to get to by S-Bahn from the airport. Public transport is excellent and cheap. The only thing about Wunderland is that it is not immediately next to an S or U bahn station, so you will need to walk a little bit from the nearest. The only problem I had was that some of the ticket machines would not accept non German credit cards. This may have been fixed by now though. Best to get a day or multi day ticket. There are harbour boat services that are part of the transit network, so you can use your ticket on these as well, so good for a "free" boat trip. There are various sightseeing tour buses, including one that has a stop near Wunderland. We took one, which is a good way of seeing the city. If you are going in the near future be warned it can get jolly cold. We went about this time of year. It was +10C when we flew out of UK and -10C when we landed. The ducks were walking on the ice.
