Are they being fair, and moving Microsoft licences.

I still use Office 97. I have also installed OpenOffice as this enables me to cope with more recent file formats such as XLXS etc.

There is an MS upgrade file which allows MS 2007 to read Xlxs files on ms upgrades.

If you can't find it, PM me and I will email / mail it.

Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind;

Use Apache OpenOffice, a FREE office suite which parallels Word and Excel and reads and writes *.doc, *.xls, etc. files.
When Microsoft decided that when I updated my Windows version my older version of Microsoft Office was to become unusable I decided in future to minimise my expenditure on Microsoft products.

With regard to MS Office.
Have heard tell, allegedly, that you can reinstall/use more than once if a single user licence/transfer to another machine using the following steps:
- Install original MS Office from disks using the key supplied
- When the time comes to activate, use ONLY the phone method
- Follow the instructions as given by the automated voice
- Record CAREFULLY the activation code generated
- Input the activation code
- Use as required

Or you could contact Microsoft and explain the situation as already discussed.

I have decided to accept the £400.

I don't feel it's overly generous considering the agro I've had, but it's better than a poke in the eye with the proverbial.

On the MS Office front, I've found my original paperwork complete with 'key', so I shouldn't have any bother installing a new copy on a new machine.

Thanks for everyone's input, it's been a great help.

Just be ready for the annoying case where if it is an OEM licence it just might be tied to a particular brand of hardware.  Hopefully you'll be fine.

Or if it remains activated on the old machine it probably won't let you install it again. You'll need to deactivate it first.

Taken from my reply at #10 -

I have been using MS Office 2010 since, err, 2010. I still have the original disc and licence code so just reinstall it it on any new laptop I have bought since then with no problem.

If I remember correctly, I bought the programme, so it is not OEM, but I have never had a problem reinstalling it on a new computer and have never had to ring Microsoft.

I used to be indecisive - now I'm not - I don't think.
