the VR Class B (in blue and yellow, of course).

You are a true Aussie Kev, as an ex Victorian trainspotter I saw all of those old beauties in B and A classification.

The old Spirit is a mighty loco alright but my personal preference was the non streamline version.

The S before the streamlining is a nice looking loco I agree. For mine the R nudges it out (but could be considered a British loco owing to being built in Scotland!) on the "normal look".  Dad remembers travelling behind the S up to Albury and reckons with a light train it had the potential to nudge Mallard but didn't have the track to do it on.  I have never read of the them doing the ton but Dad reckons it was done.

I wrote 'happy'.

This is a tough one given we have the rest of the world to choose from.

and being a primarily brit forum, I'm nervous is saying my favourite steam train is French :)

I give you the U1 :)

closely followed I confess by someting from across the pond

the PRR s-1 (closely followed by the t-1 and the NYC J3a)

As for diesels, thats tougher, not US stuff (though I do have a softspot for Alco Bigs (c636s etc)

I'm going to have to go with the DB V200 (and yes I also like warships)

We also have to include electrics (which is so hard given the choices) but I'll opt for the croc

I'm not going to get started on multiple units :)
