Hi,

I have recently bought both a Dapol and a Bachmann Class 66 Diesel Locomotive (OK, soI have sold my soul to the Devil).

I find that the Bachmann lacks traction compared to the Dapol, in other words, with the same train, whilst the wheels appear to be turning at the same speed, I get wheel spin with the Bachmann.

Has anyone noticed anything similar, or is it just my model/track combination?

Thanks,

John T

I find it surprising you get this - all Co-Co diesels are generally way more powerful than is ever necessary in my experience. Are you sure both bogies are driving correctly on the Bachmann one? Sometimes the top gear in a bogie can get worn (have seen this) meaning it does not drive on this bogie.

Also check for oil on the track or any bits of track that are uneven and may be causing wheels to lift off the railhead.

Regards,
Alan

I have both Dapol & Farish Class 66's both will happily pull 16 PCA's or 10 JPA's or a 13 wagon container train at scale speeds from a scale 60MPH, through 30MPH to 15MPH.  I havenot tested them on inclines but have no doubt that if the incline is gradual then there won't be a problem.

The real difference I find with them is that the Dapol Locomotive below a scale 7MPH is much smoother and can creep at much lower speeds..  So as I need creep ability for part of my planned layout I plan to use Dapol 66's for that part and try to keep the Farish 66's on the mainline trough part...

Hope this helps..

Sorry forgot to add - I accidentally coupled the 10 JPA's to the back of the 4 CEP the other day and it had no trouble either...  Makes for a strange formation though...

Thanks for your comments, must be just my track.

Not a great problem as the Bachmann 66 is EWS which I intend to run with EWS China Clay hoppers, when I can get a good rake together. The train in question is 12 Bachmann container wagons which the Dapol Freightliner 66 handles well.

I have both Dapol and farish versions, and to be honest little separates them in performance.

Please refer to the loco reviews topics for both. They have some in depth reviews on both locos so they might be able to give you better comparisons in different areas.

Picked this thread because it had Bachmann and Traction in the title.. i have just picked up an american outline BO-BO very reasonable on ubuy, which will get santa claused for my christmas train, on giving it a service i was pleasantly surprised to find one axle has traction tyres, but disappointed that one of them is missing.
Any idea what loco. on the farish/ dapol roster has (tender) traction tyres about 6.5mm diameter... ?  ??? :dunce:

Doesn't need to be Farish tyres, in fact you may find some of the Farish ones a bit thin - depends how old the Bachmann US loco is?

Have a look around on ebay, Peters Spares etc. and see what you can find that sounds like it will fit? Look for 5mm - 6mm diameter?

I usually keep various sizes of tyres in my spares box, from Fleischmann, Roco, Arnold, Piko, Minitrix etc. (and probably got some Farish too)
