Title: Source of ex GWR toplight coaches.
Post by: danmk1 on February 04, 2019, 05:52:18 PM
Hi All

As the title says. I am after some GWR toplight coaches to convert to run on Bordon. The War department acquired 9 GWR 'toplight' ambulance coaches which were sent to the Longmoor Military Railway which were split into 2 sets and used for passenger services.

Having a search on the forum reveals that Masterclass Models might do what I am looking for but from their website the last update was back in 2011. Last month I ordered from Etched Pixels the sides for a GWR 57ft Toplight (UMCSG1204), as well as some other items, so might have an answer but was wondering if anyone could advise on any other options?
Have also emailed Worlsey Works but I believe their version is the later one, but he was more than helpful and said his 2mm etches could be made into N.

Thanks in advance
Dan

Sounds like you have already identified the 3 main possible sources. I have heard of stuff from Masterclass models more recently so I believe they are still around. The problem as far as I recall is that they tend to produce in batches so they may not have any toplight kits left.

DavidK71 on RMWeb has built some Masterclass Toplights and they certainly look really good.

Thanks @Karhedron (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=207) for the info about Masterclass models still being around. Would be after a number of them so wonder how many would be required for a batch, might try to send an email to the address on the blog.

Just had a look at the link you posted and you are correct about how good they look, I would be after the 57ft version though, makes me think I'm about 6 years too late starting my 1st model railway

Thanks again
Dan

My 57' (full brake and dining car) and 70' (composite and brake/3rd) toplights are by Cav'ndish, bought musch longer than ten years ago, and the only one I could find with a search was sold last year by

It might be worth expressing an interest to them in case more turn up.
