I'm a real newbie when it comes to this stuff; that might be possible but I don't really want to start taking the loco apart at the moment as I don't know what I'm doing.

I've been given the name of a contact in the Berkshire Area Group, which is my local area group and when restrictions allow, I intend to go along to one of their club nights and see what they get up to. Perhaps someone there will know if it can be modified.

Hi there, @37214 I bought the set because you get the loco with sound fitted and the two coaches and it was discounted. I could not find any locos with sound fitted already I suppose I could have bought another castle loco and had a go at fitting a sound chip myself. And even though I have seen a video of another guy on this forum showing how to do it, I do not fancy it. And with the current crisis I could not be bothered with sending one away somewhere like youchoos to get one fitted. This was the easy maybe lazy way out. I forgot to ask did you manage to get a cheap controller.

All good reasons

I sent you a message but yes, I rang Jim as you suggested and he gave me a good deal on a controller, a lot less than I have seen advertised on several websites. Hopefully with me tomorrow.

I'm pleased you have a new controller whatever it maybe.

Thank you; it's a basic Bachmann DC controller. I recently bought a Farish train set as a way of getting back into N-gauge as I don't have a layout but a fair bit of old Poole Farish locos, kits and rolling stock. What I hadn't appreciated was that the set I bought was DCC and was advised on this forum not to run my analogue locos on this set as they would suffered severe damage.

crewearpley40

I noticed @37214   , a class 25 on the box did have 6 dcc. Below the code of the farish loco number, description and next to the barcode. It's an era 6 whichbsuits me 1967 to 71, though I run era 7 and 8. The loco is dcc fitted. So as has been said before. There was no label on the front of box. Until I was home, checked by lifting the body, chip. Etc. Ouch. Dcc. Ok. It can be run but as im analogue control, only with my analogue controller . It still works

The description of the set that I bought clearly says digital and DCC, I just didn't understand and hadn't done my research properly.

From what you say and my understanding of what I have read, it's ok to run DCC on analogue but not the other way round.

The qualified person here, nick. @ntpntpntp   , please can we have some input ? Many thanks. Chris

Hi there if you have bought a dcc loco brand new boxed it will be enabled to run on dc. Most of my dcc locos i have turned this off,but it can be turned back on or remove the decoder and replace with blanking chip.

Yes it's ok to run a DCC fitted loco on DC.  The vast majority of DCC decoders will allow it.

Pure smooth DC is best, some decoders won't get on well with PWM based DC controllers, and feedback controllers  aren't suitable as they can't read the motor back-EMF.  DO NOT run on a layout which has an electronic track continuity device (eg. Relco or Gaugemaster) as that may damage the decoder.

The operating characteristics of a DCC fitted loco on DC will be different to the same loco not DCC fitted. The decoder requires 6V-7V for the electronics to "wake up" so you need to turn the knob a bit more, but it should then move off smoothly.

Note that the ability to run on DC can be turned off in the decoder, and some people that only ever run DCC like to turn this ability off to avoid any possible runaways due to interrupted DCC signal.

If you really don't plan to go with DCC, I would swap the decoder for a DC blanking plate so that you get normal DC running characteristics.
