When I was a lad, I was given a tatty copy of "Nice Enough to Eat", an Island Records sampler released in 1969. This record was pivotal in introducing me to many of bands of the day inc. Free and consequently helped shape my musical tastes. NETE was one of at least 3 samplers released by Island. I had another sampler called "Wowie Zowie" also released in 1969 by Decca, which featured The Moody Blues and very early Genesis. Vertigo Records released sampler(s) as well. They were all good enough to be records in their own right.

Cheers,

Tim

My vinyl collection includes Island Samplers
Nice enough to eat
Bumpers (double album)
El Pea (double album)

CBS sampler
Fill your head with rock (double album)

Polydor Sampler
Bombers

Harvest Sampler
Picnic (double album)

Atlantic sampler
Age of Atlantic (single album)

I used to have the Vertigo double album sampler but lent it to someone and never got it back :*(

Fantastic Mick, I remember the first two Island samplers well, the CBS one, but not the others. The Vertigo one was called "Suck it and See". I had had another one called "Handle with Care" with a spider on the cover - bit bluesy for me at the time. I would imagine you have a very very very large collection of music.

Cheers,

Tim

Yep, I still have "Nice enough to eat", also, "You can all join in".

CBS sampler - "The rock machine turns you on".
Vision over visibility. Bono, U2.

Moonglum

Well done George, I thought there was a fourth Island sampler. I recall the CBS one as well. There really was some quality music on these releases.

Cheers,

Tim

Newportnobby

Wow, George.
'You can all join in' pre dates 'Nice enough to eat' and 'The rock machine turns you on' pre dates 'Fill your head with rock'
Do you still play them?

Compared to some I am quite minimalist, Tim.
Maybe 120 albums, 110 singles, 500 or so CDs and Lord knows how many cassettes of stuff I've recorded (our local library used to lend out CDs so, of course, they got recorded)
A friend in Northampton had over 4000 albums and that was 40 years ago!

Luckily I've still got the kit from 1988 to play everything on

Sorry that you didn't like Nightwish Martin @port perran  , not live but perhaps this is more your cuppa tea.

I saw this band in Barnstaple in 1975 and bought the album "Extravaganza" from which this comes. I suspect you have also seen them as they are/were a SW of England act. Anyway, I really like this song and the atmosphere it creates - written by the late Gordon Haskell.

Cheers,

Tim

I saw Stackridge twice back in the 70s.
A great live act.
I've got The Man in the Bowler Hat album which has some excellent songs on it especially The Road to Venezuela and The Galloping Gaucho.
I'll get round to fixing it drekkly me 'ansome.

Still using a Pioneer stack system bought in 1988 with twin cassette decks, turntable, 6CD cartridge, tuner and graphic equaliser. All I've done extra is arrange play through surround speakers :)

Another live track.
I've seen The Bluetones maybe 7-8 times in the last 25 years or so.
A marvellous little live band hailing from Hounslow in West London.
They invariably finish their concerts with If which is great to sing along with.
Probably not everyone's cup of tea but I (and Mrs PP) really like them.

Good choices with lindisfarne and bluetones on a sunday evening

Found them really easy to listen especially after a long week

Listening later after my meal and one of those days

Hey Mick @Newportnobby , have you heard these boys?

Listen out for the nod to John Bonham in the drum solo, there must be about ten drum kits MM is playing.

Tim

I bought a Sony stack system when we moved into our new house in 1981, but sold it around about 1994. Why, I don't recall, but I realise now it was one of the silliest things I ever did.

Sound gear back then was quality stuff, I've never had sound as good since. The turntable was particularly excellent. It was some other brand that I don't recall.

And yes, I still listen to those sampler discs.
