No idea on best but BVE4/OpenBVE is free which makes it a good start.

Quite honestly I find them tedious and boring - rather like a long drive 8)

Old fashioned as it may be, I still enjoy Microsoft train simulator (MSTS), with various uk and german add-ons.

There's railworks 2 which is a good starter platform, it is getting an upgrade on September 23rd and will be titled train simulator 2012, I bought the first one cause it was on special offer and have recieved two updates for free as they don't believe in bringing out a new version every year and charging their customers over again year in year out, slightly better than the trainz franchise but not too hardcore and has a ever-growing catalogue of routes and trains, carriages, waggons, not to mention the freeware makers out there.

yeh i've heard of this

is railworks 2 any good?

is it realistic driving, signalling etc?

is it any fun, or really boring?

i notice that the updates for new locos and routes cost a fair amount...

Yer the addons do cost a fair bit the quality is great, the realism varies you can just meander through
A route looking at it, signalling is realistic depending on your settings SPAD violations will end a scenario there's the driver alert system and such the new version should bring nice new features hopefully,

Plus remember once a year or so they have 75% off sales and that's when I get the stuff I kinda want but didn't wanna buy,,,,

The new Brighton to London route has been released for Railworks, if anyone is put off by the price tag of £25 i have to say it's worth it the route is excellent and the scenarios are quite challenging if you want to stick to timetables religiously,

i took this screenshot while running Brighton - Victoria racing out of clapham and up the fly over toward the thames,

Have you looked on the itunes store?  I did a quick search and found:-

I just had a quick look at OpenBVE and it looks like the original developer's stopped working on it and they're still working out what's going on. There is a download there but it requires Mono to be installed too, which is a bit of a faff and having to install other packages and libraries to make an app work on the Mac isn't really the way to do things. It is free though if you want a mess around.

I've had a go of TrainZ on the iPad and it does work pretty well. It even has an editor. The rolling stock seems a bit limited though. If the Mac version available from the App Store is the same but scaled up and with more stuff, it may just do the trick. Although I found actually running the trains on it was a bit dull compared to playing with my train set too :)

I'll have a look at Trainz and see if they do London to Brighton/Portsmouth/Southampton.

I'll also have another look at PC emulators for the Mac. Have used Parallels but it had its issues and then I kept getting a message that my version of Windows 7 was not genuine (which it is). This was one of the reasons why I switched to Macs and swore never to have anything to do with Windows again.

Aside from the validation issues, Pendy, did you have any luck getting any games running with Parallels?  I have VirtualBox, which works fine for the simple stuff I need to run (mostly SCARM, PCRail and SimSig), but despite wasting many hours, I can't get its alleged 3D support going.

I actually own a copy of Railworks from my brief relapse into Windows (never again!), would be nice to have it working...

I was unable to get much running with Parallels even Civilisation 2 would not work!

Even if I use Bootcamp, I am still going to have to try and get Windows 7 loaded if I want to use Railworks (which I do because of that picture that Fratton posted).

i have to say that railworks is getting better and better, scenarios used to be very lonely places with no variety in AI trains but they have started to add different AI models (guess they didn't want to before because peeps turn them into drivable assets) and sites like http://www.rw-trainsim.co.uk (http://www.rw-trainsim.co.uk) and http://www.uktrainsim.com/ (http://www.uktrainsim.com/) offering not only individual downloads but freeware packs and scenario packs to go with them,,,,

Hi Pendy,

I use a Mac with OS Lion,if you've got a copy of windows 7 it will run in Bootcamp.
I use Windows 7 in Bootcamp, but it's not connected to internet so I don't have to install all the anti this and anti that software and wait while it installs the latest updates and bug fixes all the time.

I only got Windows 7 after I found out that OS Lion won't run XP in Bootcamp but I believe the prior OS would run XP,my only reason to use windows is that some of my software won't run on a Mac.
Getting a copy of windows worked out very little more than one of the emulators which very often still won't run some software.

Thanks, will have a go with Bootcamp. When I was running Parallels, I didn't have it connected to the internet either to avoid all the anti-this and that stuff that you referred to

You probably know that you will have to repartition the hard drive but that seemed very easy to me using a Mac,I had to do mine twice because I didn't allow enough room for the Microsoft bloatware the first time.
Save anything important first.
I like the Mac,it just seems a lot less hassle to set anything up and get it working than it does in windows.

I'm still waiting for a nice train sim for the cheap Android tablets. The 85 quid one I've got can play doom and stuff so it ought to be able to run a trainsim 8)

bootcamp is definately the way forward with this sort of software- running virtual machines like parallels is fine until you want to do something clever- like running a train simulator

i'm intrigued by your error message about an unauthorized version of windows, perhaps you've picked up a little virus type thing? as a mac user, i have not much good to say about microsoft, but i have found in the past that when issues like this arise then they are quite good about helping you- i mean the issue of the non authorised version of your windows

Thanks. Will give bootcamp a go. The unauthorised version of Windows message, which first appeared when I was upgrading Windows 7 to SP1 on my PC, was not a virus  (although I was worried about it at the time). It was the final straw and now I have hassle free computing using Macs - except when I have do deal with anything Microsoft related!
