I have a couple of Dapol JNAs which have lost buffers

The image shows one of these wagons with its one remaining buffer detached. They very easily pull off and this is presumably why I have lost so many buffers.
Any one know of a supply for said buffers? I need at least 6.

Cheers

Take a mould of one with two part silicone rubber eg Siligum, and cast some in epoxy resin.  I've done that for quite a few small bits and pieces that are otherwise hard to find.

You only need to use a small amount - I normally end up with a mould not much bigger than a sugar cube.
Make the mould in two stages:
1) create the bottom half first with a flat top and press in the thing you want to copy into the rubber. I find it works best if you press in about 3/4 of the item. You may want to use a craft knife to push and ensure the rubber is a tight fit around the item.  Leave to cure.
2) cut two or 3 locating holes in the bottom half, then make the top half mould so it fits over the bottom half and fills the locating holes. leave to cure
3) separate the two halves, remove the original item. Cut a couple of runners as an entry point for the casting medium and to leave room for air to escape.
4) clamp the two halves back together (not too tightly or you may distort the mould) and pour in the stuff - better if you can squidge it in with a little pressure!  Leave to harden.  I've had quite good success using 5 minute epoxy as the medium!
5) separate the mould, remove the casting, tidy up and paint.

You won't get it right every time, but it's a fun way of creating replacements for bits and pieces!

Hi @ntpntpntp
My silicon has arrived and Im expecting epoxy this morning.
Just a little confused about what you mean by locating holes. Any chance you could expand on theis explanation please.

@kirky

remembered I took a couple of photos whilst casting a replacement buffer for one of @weave 's Spanish units I was servicing.  The piece needed to be a specific curved shape to match the rounded ends of the model, so best option was to cast a new one based on the equivalent buffer from the other end.

Hopefully you can see that  after creating the main lower half mould I cut a recessed edge and some locating holes so that the top half mould would include some "keys"  and ensure the two halves fitted together accurately.

This was actually the first attempt, I wasn't happy with it and made a second casting  (and didn't take any more photos doh!), but you get the idea!

Thanks @ntpntpntp
Here is my firt attempt. Im reasonably impressed (ooh bad pun).

I actually made two molds. The first pic shows one of them. Im pleased taht there is something which looks reasonably like a buffer that may possibly be tidied up enough. Ive currently got another two curing in the mold at the moment. Ill see what theyre like. Obvioulsy the resin will need to sure for 24 hours before I can really clean up the buffer.
Interesting little exercise though. And thanks again ntpnntpntp.

crepello

Just come across this thread. One of my two 86s has lost a buffer after I coupled it too closely to the other one and it was mangled after a curve!
I'd prefer a brass or plastic alternative; advice would be appreciated.
Cheers.

@crepello  you might find a replacement here: https://www.nbrasslocos.co.uk/fitall.html#BUFFER

Or in the N Gauge society shop if you are a member - they have a very good set of replacement modern image buffers
A keen modern image modeller in N Gauge, the latest creation I am working on is Cottingfield - an N Gauge Rule 1 Layout

Plotting has started on a DC controlled layout for the trains I can't easily convert to DCC North Wroxham - an N Gauge Modern Era Layout

For non-UK, mainly French, stock this source has about 30 different buffers.
