Title: Server Upgrade
Post by: Tank on December 06, 2018, 03:38:02 PM
Dear all,

The forum will soon be changing from a shared server to a dedicated server as part of our upgrades. This will improve the speed at which the forum works. It will also allow other parts of the forum to work properly and improve further upgrade work to be done.

This will mean that when the forum is being switched over you will not be able to post for about 24 hours (although hopefully less!).

Many thanks for your support and the forums success,
Tank.

When is the maintenance scheduled for?

Should be happening from tonight.  The technician is making a backup of the forum as we speak...which is now at 50GB.  A big site!

I have been informed that it may take 48 hours.  Best to get it out of the way before the busy weekend!

Regarding speed, it will be faster once everything has been loaded.  We thought you'd appreciate the forum to be up and running than nothing at all.  :)

Great news, and looking forward to the fully functioning site.

Everything, bar the Gallery as noted, seems to be just fine, and no speed problems for me at least.

Though I'm left wondering how on Earth I managed to get through the last two days without a 'fix'. :D

Thanks to the whole team involved in the process. :beers:

Is there some "optimisation" to be done on the new server ?   Because at present the load time for the entire forum, subsections within it, and getting to posts is terribly slow compared to the old forum.  Sufficiently slow that if that persists, I'll be using the forum a lot less.

I'm in Australia, mate and it's super quick on my phone. A little bit of patience please?

I don't think that a few glitches are any reason to leave the forum!
Title: Re: Server Upgrade
Post by: Tank on December 10, 2018, 10:36:08 AM
Nigel, I did say in reply #34 that once everything is loaded it would run faster.

Currently, with no images from the gallery uploaded, the forum is constantly searching for the missing files and slowing it down.  As well as other small problems.  Please give us time.

Chris.
Title: Re: Server Upgrade
Post by: Snowwolflair on December 10, 2018, 11:26:28 AM
Yes I agree with @Tank (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=2) Threads with no embedded pictures are quick but those with lots of "unavailable" photos have a 2-3 second delay which is to be expected.  Add to that the upload of pictures in the background the poor little thing must be shattered  8)

Keep up the good work

Post by: Bob Tidbury on December 10, 2018, 12:31:10 PM
Nigel ,I agree that the Forum is a bit slower at the moment  but Tank has explained that once everything has been loaded it should be quicker and there will be other benefits as well so just be a little bit more patient Even Rome wasn't built in a day ,and allthough I know nothing about this sort of thing I think there is quite a lot of work involved you don't just flick a switch and hay presto it all works but  I know it will be done as soon as possible ,It's certainately not a reason to leave this fantastic Forum ,if it took forever to load I will never leave .
:thankyousign: to Jean , Tank and everyone else involved ,and don't rush to finish the work better to be slow but get it right first  time .

Hi Jean, Tank and the crew,

Just giving my thanks to you all and like most to say that the Forum was greatly missed here over some of the Weekend.

Luckily I had the footie and I did actually get some things done on the layout.

Am still confused about the gallery/posting pics situation. I just post directly from 'my pictures' (Windows 7) to my post. I think they go into the gallery? but I don't need them to. So, do I still have to wait to do this (NO problem if I do) but just seeing.

Computer dunce as you all know.

Cheers again weave  :beers:

 Eh, hum, ha what??  :confused2:

I appear to have missed all the excitement. Haven't had the opportunity to drop in for a few days, and now I find all hell has broken loose! I'm not finding it any slower* than it was before, and the 'Not secure' thingy on the address line has grown up into a proper padlock.  :claphappy:

Thank you to @Tank (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=2) and all the techies for wielding their soldering irons into the dawn.

Cheers,

Chris

* PS. Just hit the 'Preview' button and that, admittedly, was a bit slower than usual, but that's hardly a major issue.

Hi all,

An update for you.  Currently the gallery is almost completed.  It has been very hard to download all of the files from the old host, and they have taken their time in helping.  However, Jean has been working hard to resolve all of the many problems that we've had.

The latest one is that the Gallery files are all in Zip files.  Unfortunately I'm running out of space on the new server, so need to upgrade to a 100GB SDD to allow us to move forwards.  This should happen shortly and hopefully the Gallery will be restored in the next 24 hours.

After that, we can look at resolving the actual issues on the forum.  :)  Why did I start this forum again?!?!?   :'( ;) ;D

I'm not sure on the finances at the moment.  I'm due some advertising money from one advertiser, and the donations have been fantastic this month - without me even having to ask!  The biggest outlay will be technician costs.

I would like to say a HUGE thank you to the members who have donated.  This has been a weight off of my mind to have funds coming in to cover the bills so far.

Yes, 100GB is more than enough for now.  We only really need about 45GB at the moment (and that's 8 yeas worth of data).  No need to spend more money each month for no reason.

I am still getting the wrong format error. Out of interest  @ntpntpntp (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=5885) , what browser are you using? I am using Chrome, may try Edge later as I have found that sometimes, when trying to pay for something using 'Sagepay', it will not let me on Chrome but will on Edge, (I know that is nothing relative to this problem), but the browser may have something to do with it.

Its telling you the file type or size is wrong, or is not the same as used to be allowed.  Try loading a picture you have previously successfully loaded and see what happens.

The most likely explanation is the file image "type" filter the database currently has.

As its probably a new install it may have gone back to a default setting and the range of acceptable file types and sizes may need adjusted @Tank (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=2)

Right, what we're going to do it put a new gallery update on here.  Hopefully this should be easier for everyone to use.  It also has built in editing for photo's.  Hopefully that will sort out any issues with the gallery.

Files of 2Mb are completely unecessary for forum use, the pic below is 350.82 Kb, perfectly viewable and can be viewed a bit larger by clicking on he image.  Images from cameras with mega pixel sensors  produce massive files, great for 20x16 prints to hang on the wall but for forum use even 500Kb is overdoing it, it takes up far more space on Tank's SSD too.

Not only taking up storage space but also taking longer to load, and not too friendly for those using mobile devices with limits on the amount they can download.

This link is to the Amateur Photographer forum detailing size limits  for uploading images. Any image editing software has the capability of setting image sizes, (sometimes known as optimising for the internet)

Just a thought about file size, why upload such large files? It takes up room on the server and for those with a poor internet connection, it takes a long time to download them. It also makes no difference to the picture quality you see on the screen. I put mine through a photo editor and make them a maximum of 1,000px and about 80% quality. The file size is reduced from 4Mb + down to less than 200kB with no loss of quality.
@Dorsetmike (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=2855) , you beat me to it!

...

Personally I'd prefer to view that image 4x (or more) larger than that. I mainly browse the forum on my 'puter at work or laptop at home (where I sometimes project to the TV). It looks like there's some very nice modelling in those gardens and I'd like to see it in more detail. And I prefer to zoom-in/out and fly around a large image rather than view a series of separate zoomed-in shots.

Different strokes etc. :beers:

Sorry, straying a bit. :offtopicsign: :sorrysign:

ADDIT: I agree there's steps folk can and maybe should perform, to reduce the size of an image without loss of resolution, before posting.

Not to prolong the file size debate too much, I tend to use c800 x 600 'pixies' when resizing a photo. That gives me an image of around the 200 odd kB like this one:

I think that shows things fairly well and allows a bit of zooming in..

We cannot afford unlimited disc space or repeated upgrades, so some limits on file size will be necessary.

Can the server s/w resize submitted pictures? Or at least produce an "outsize picture" error message

I've just attempted to upload an image - several times. I believe I'm using the same process I've been using but get this message:
The following error or errors occurred while adding the picture
Not a valid picture file.

It IS a valid picture file and if I'm doing anything differently I'm unable to identify my mistake. While I'm at it, I'd like to suggest that there should be a simpler way to upload. No?

Yes and we will all get this message until the input filters are updated to the settings the old site had (see earlier notes on the thread).   Remember this is a new install of the forum software and all the settings will have reverted to default.

Most pictures from today's cameras are of the order of 8MB.  In order to reduce the file size and increase download speed, I edit the file using Paint to reduce the size to 25% which produces a file of less than 500kB (1/4 X 1/4 = 1/16).  The resulting definition is plenty good enough for website use.

I, too, use 'Paint' to resize the odd photo for the Club Kawasaki forum but, as I take quite a few pics at quite a few exhibitions, it would be a royal P.I.T.A. to resize all of those for this forum.
I await developments/new instructions from the Techies

Thanks @Malc (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=497).

I've installed it as it looks quite handy.

By habit I have always used Paint to adjust meddle with my photos and that has a quick and easy Resize option.

As mentioned elsewhere, I default anything to be posted here or emailed to a max dimension of c800 pixels which usually produces a decent quality image for online viewing.

About 18 months ago I ralised I was running out of gallery space, so I switched my pictures to my personal website instead.  Funnily enough, I have tried to check my gallery space usage today, but I can't see it any more, presumably since the server switch.  It would be nice to go back to using the gallery, but I don't want to fill it up.  I've now found the space and I've less than 30% left free.

Since the recent upgrades, I do occasionally have a slow moment, (but that might be my age), but one thing I have noticed is that all the email notifications are coming through almost immediately. No more delays like I have been having for the last few months.

I've also experienced some slow moments (particularly this afternoon).
Mind you, like Danny, perhaps it's me (or something to do with the incessant rain down here over the last few weeks).

Slow here also in fact it's by far the slowest Forum of the six I frequent daily, My download speed is normally around 90Mb, plus or minus 3Mb; hopefully it's the continuing upgrade work, we can only hope so.

I've noticed some odd behaviour: there are slow loading pages, then there are pages which appear to have loaded, but the browser is telling me that it's still loading - I haven't found what it's up to yet; and then there are times when after hitting the 'back' button, nothing appears to happen, so I hit it again, and end up going back two pages when it catches up. Disconcerting, that one.

This is all on my ipad/safari.

Yes that's the same here on my IPad ,one minute the Forum is as fast as it used to be and then as Yet another said you click on go back or next page and you wait nothing happens so click again and your back two pages ,but as Tank said once the gallery is transferred it might be OK as I said before it's not just a case of flicking a toggle switch there must be a lot of technical work involved so let's just see what happens when every thing is finished .

Probably totally unrelated but we are in the throes of enduring a huge WIN10 update.

It's slowed everything down here to a crawl if not a dead stop.

Hoping that all the fixes are done soon so Chris and the team can enjoy a peaceful and uneventful Yule!

Merry Christmas everybody.  :beers:

@Tank (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?action=profile;u=2) I just noticed the [ youtube ] tag is generating an http:// rather than https:// link, which is causing the Youtube content not to be displayed unless the browser is set up to display non-secure content.

Other than that, everything is working fine for me (though I'm usually asleep during what I assume is peak UK usage time).

Thanks about Youtube.  I guess this is because users submit their own links and choose whether to use http or https.  I'll see if we can get some coding done to change this.

Quote from: Graham on December 23, 2018, 12:31:16 AM
another thing I noticed is some threads are coming up as "not secure" whilst others are coming up as secure.

This is most likely due to the photo's on the forum.  Once we can finally sort out the new gallery (in talks with the author still), then these should be secure as well.

I can't remember who asked, and what thread, but we now have a 'Save as draft' function for our messages now.  Once saved, they can be accessed through your profile.

Admin,

I'm no programming expert but just an observation from me (apologies if this comes under the heading of teaching grandma to suck eggs) ........

The forum is back to operating very slowly this morning. At each turn of page I get the message "Establishing secure connection" at the bottom left of my screen (Windows 10. Chrome browser). I thought establishing a secure connection was a routine that took place when you first access a website. It shouldn't need to keep doing this once you are on the site?

As I said, just an observation, not a moan.

Alec.

My message is different.  I'm running Firefox (latest version).
After requesting a page I see a message for up to 10 seconds giving details of the page I requested, which then changes to "Establishing a TLS connection to ngaugeforum.co.uk" for up to 20 seconds.  The whole website has become a cumbersome tortoise, a pain to use instead of the fun it used to be.
:sorrysign:
I know that you were trying to improve things by the changes, but for me the result has been the opposite.

When I pressed {Preview} to check my spelling, fetching the preview took 20 seconds.  :(

Sorry!  We're trying to sort it out.  Believe me, I'm more annoyed than most!

It seems that we are being constantly attacked by 'bots' from other countries.  The host is helping to rectify this with NGF Tech.  Also, once the new gallery is installed and photo's converted to work with it, that will also help.  There were a lot of problems with the forum that we're working through.  I know that it's very annoying for you, but it's annoying for me, and has taken up a lot of my Christmas break to sort out.

Unfortunatley in Microsoft Edge you can select which site to Allow notifications from, It is either ALL sites or No sites.

I'll be keeping mine at No sites.

Just a bit irritating getting the settings message ever time a page is loaded. I've tried turning off all notifications in my profile but still get the message

Tank,

As of 12.30pm today is the Gallery working correctly? I'm using the bulk upload feature to add to my gallery and after dragging eight files across and dropping them into the box the little thumbnails appear with their progress bars and then the ticks showing successful uploads.

Now once they all show as uploaded the only option (as far as I can see) is to return the the gallery - but they are not there! Am I being a muppet?

Well lucky you, it has been dire the last 24 hours, taking 10-20 secs to load a page, post a reply etc, despite doing all the cache things and on two different browsers on two different pc's with two different OS and in two different towns, that assuming it doesn't time out altogether  :censored:

Well lucky you, it has been dire the last 24 hours, taking 10-20 secs to load a page, post a reply etc, despite doing all the cache things and on two different browsers on two different pc's with two different OS and in two different towns, that assuming it doesn't time out altogether  :censored:

I guess it depends on what your expectations are. Most pages have loaded in less than 5 seconds and I've not had any time outs

Its a new site, URL is the same but the IP address is one the web spiders have not seen before and everything on the internet will be trying to index the site in real time.  Its a storm that should pass but it will get worse as they try to index the Gallery new or old.

Hi Jean, you just keep doing what you're doing and it will all work out.  Communication is key so as long as Tank lets us all know what's going on it may help appease some.
As part of this upgrade process, am I right in thinking the N'porioum is still a work in progress, Add Auction only points to a test board and I was almost finished adding a lot when the screen just completely cleared.

My main concern is that everything is loading fast since yesterday evening into today. Once it is loading fast then that means we have isolated the cause and can work on it from there.

Just so that I don't keep trying to upload to the Gallery - is this function disabled? I have been trying to upload PDF images to my Gallery and I keep getting told it is an invalid file type or I don't have permission?
Title: Re: Server Upgrade
Post by: NGFTech on January 05, 2019, 09:10:39 PM
Tank will best say as I do not know what he has enabled / disabled.

Here's what is happening offline... the site has been using two galleries for uploads and we have been trying to merge it into one pro gallery but have been encountering issues during conversion which we are attempting to address in the background. I imagine when that is sorted then all will be functional.

Hi,

Might have been answered before but as you're talking about posting pictures. The other week they would upload if the pics were made smaller. I have difficulty doing this as am a computer numpty so when it's sorted will it all go back to how it was ie picture size can be loaded as it took me about 2 years to master how to do it before?

Hope that makes sense. Anyway, thanks to all the tech people, Happy New Year and good luck with whatever you're doing.

That Alerts system is problematic and I have it set only to alert on personal messages nothing more. I will leave it disabled for now as what's the point to be "alerted" when you can't even view the page you are being alerted about.

Definitely looking into it. While I am online and testing I may turn it on now and again to see if there are improvements. Then will turn it off when I cannot monitor to ensure pages load.
Title: Re: Server Upgrade
Post by: NGFTech on January 06, 2019, 12:57:10 PM
It is enabled now... the problem MAY be that there are more than a dozen things you can be alerted about and if a member has all checked in their profile then each time you load a page it checks on all of those before loading a page. Now if many members are online and all doing it at the same time then the script becomes really busy.

At present it is set for personal messages and new replies only. Let's see how that goes and more can be added.

Greetings folks. I appreciate the tags to check this thread but really everything should channel through Tank.

Just as an update, I was working on a massive amount of files and the database yesterday and today which may have slowed things down.

In addition to this, the new gallery is resource intensive so checking things over may have slowed you all down. I am not working on anything as of right now and the alerts are temporarily off so you should be able to run at a good speed.

Also, just added a little bit of cache code to tell your browsers to stop loading things that should be in cache so that should speed you up too.

I see today I had a '1' in the triangle above the toolbar and thought to myself "What could that be?" as we don't get those for Thank Yous any more as the Thank You button has gone.

Vary variable response for me unfortunately.  timed out a couple of times, and slow to load pages from time to time, but ok on other occasions.  Have to say  generally it seems to be a bit worse than it used to be before the server updates etc.

Hitting the Reply button took 4 seconds to load.

Variable response here also but our BB is not good. Still on slow copper despite just 2 miles from the nearest fibre box!

Glad to see Notifications back.

Not tried using the Gallery since the upgrade but some folk seem to be doing OK. Would seem like oversized pictures are the main cause for problems. Various methods of resizing already covered so won't repeat,

Is the server upgrade now complete ?

I am new to the site and been reading alot of topics some go back may years.

The main issue I have is that I keep getting the denied.png "sorry, you are not allowed to view this file. Make sure you are connected to the server"

for example

https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?topic=1671.msg44789#msg44789 (https://www.ngaugeforum.co.uk/SMFN/index.php?topic=1671.msg44789#msg44789)

Is there an issue or just me ?

Welcome to the forum Colin. Not sure why you can not view the post, one of the 'powers that be' will probably be able to let you know what is happening.

Welcome aboard Colin.
I think the message you are getting relates to the fact that some 12 months ago (or thereabouts) Photobucket started to charge users for having an account with them.
Several of us on here used Photobucket (a photo hosting site) to add photos to their threads. Some of us (me included) didn't want to pat for our Photobucket accounts so the links to our photos were severred.
So it's nothing that you've done wrong it's just an unfortunate event from a while back.
Any photos added in the last 15 months aho (by other methods or using different hosting sites) should be fine.
Hope that helps.
Martin

Thanks for the quick replies.

I am sure that there are a range of ways people include photos and video's, and some issues must be expected.

G'day from Australia, Colin, and welcome to the NGF!

Don't worry mate, I've been having problems posting pictures since the update, so it's nothing you've done, I assure you.

Hi all,

While were on the subject of posting pics. I think I asked the question and don't think I got an answer (apologies if I did) but when the gallery is sorted can I post like I used to?

I have a problem with making the pics smaller to post so shall/can I just wait so I can post them or go on a computer course?

Thanks for any help.

Cheers weave  :beers:

The new gallery has come to halt, due to the author not helping us with what is needed.  :'(  I have to wait until they update it with what we need.  You will be able to edit photo's with the upgrade, but for now, you will need to do them yourself.

Going back on topic, I'm finding the forum to be very quick.

I find the making of pictures smaller a tad awkward so use Flickr, certainly till the forum sloution is fixed.
Flickr is free as long as you limit yourself to 1000 photos and is easy.
I can send you a "How to do it" in bullet point form if you wish.

Hi Martin,

That would be great. I'm a complete computer numpty but my wife, who isn't, works very long hours in IT and although I do ask for help sometimes, it's best not to. She's not an ogre, just very tired and the last thing she wants to do when she gets in.

Understandable, I'm a Landscape/Maintenance Gardener and our garden is crap  :)

A PM would be good and I'll give it a go.

Thank you so much.

Cheers weave  :beers:

Thank you Brian,

Here be one of the many problems of being a luddite, computer numpty in that I don't know how to send you the pics in the first place  :).

Have been in contact with Martin via PM so hopefully we can sort something out tomorrow. Any further help always appreciated but please don't fry my brain with technology  :)

Weave, no need to go on a computer course. Download this freebie. Its pretty much idiot proof.

Pix Resizer its called, and that's what it does  :D

if your using windows open the image in paint then either drag the image to the size you want,or use the resize tab and type in the percentage change you want in the horizontal and vertical boxes.if your using a real operating system you can do it at the command prompt using the mogrify command. No idea how to do it with apples though

On a Mac, use the preview App - great for conversions ( PDF to JPG etc) . You can resize a JPG by using Export and changing the resolution of the JPG.

Thanks guys,

Been waylaid with a sick dog. She's good now, we think, but bit messy. Anyway, will have another go tomorrow at all fronts. I went to college, it can't be rocket surgery for God's sake!!! I'm on a Samsung PC, Windows 7 if that helps.

Thanks again,

The speed is brill now, no doubt about that!

However, at the risk of getting my marching orders from the boss, I'd still like to see a simple plug and play method of uploading pictures to my galleries without resizing, going through Flickr, etc, as in times of old.

I have a heap of railway themed pics from last year's Japanese trip I'd like to bore members with!  ;D

Could we disable the " add single picture option", and rename the add multiple pictures option  which is almost easy to use!
Title: Re: Server Upgrade
Post by: Newportnobby on March 01, 2019, 10:11:19 AM
I use the 'add multiple' option for even one pic for that very reason. It's just easier.
I also note there are 2 pics from each page bumped to the next page which, of course, just increases the number of pages to scour through
