making some terrain hexes for that other scale for wargames ...
mdf hex, added Jarvis scenic mat, then some Peco tufts, but I'm looking to add laying water to denote bog / flooded are etc.

any suggestions on [a] what to use, and how to apply it to give the impression of, basically, puddles ?

Years ago on my layout I had a small depression in some ballast near a goodsyard, and instead of filling it up with more ballast, as an experiment I thought I'd create a puddle.

My weapon of choice for water at the time was gloss varnish, so I brushed several layers into the hole. It's still there today, and looks pretty good.

However, things have moved on since then, and there are many products available now (I'm thinking, of course, of Woodland Scenics products, but there are many others).

I think a shallow depression is a prerequisite.

For boggy/marshy surface water I'd go for the traditional gloss varnish approach, easy to pour a thin coat and let it flow amongst the tufts etc.

If you are only talking about a shallow depression, why not use ordinary PVA? It dries clear, so paint the bottom of the depression a suitable brown or whatever and put in a drop of PVA. Depending on the depth, you will need to let the first drop dry and then add another drop, but you would have to do that with varnish anyway!  I used PVA to fill a 'pond' in the Stationmasters garden on my first layout - worked a treat.

I used to be indecisive - now I'm not - I don't think.
