Title: NGF Mobile
Post by: Tank on June 18, 2012, 05:28:17 PM
We have now launched the 'N Gauge Forum Mobile'.  This is due to demand from members for a mobile friendly way of navigating the site.

The mobile experience is of course a basic version of the forum, and many features are missing.  This or course makes it easier for the smaller screens and loading times of some mobile devices.

Please let us know how you get on.

Oooh, a wizzy new mobile interface. It looks pretty good and seems easy enough to navigate via Android.

Tank....I will be giving this ago. Have just got me a shiny new HTC one X

The normal forum displays beautiful on my phone, but I would imagine the 'Mobile' version will be just as good

Cheers, Anthony

I must have seen this on my phone only moments after you pressed the big shiny green GO button as one minute it was old the next... wow.

I like it! Seems to work perfectly and much more friendly for the iPhone - goodbye annoying scrolling and zooming. Well done!   :NGF:

I'm glad it's got the 'go to full site' button at the bottom the page. I use an iPad which is fine with the full version, but it defaulted to being the mobile version using safari. no probs just clicking the button to get ful version.
But good idea for phones.

Didn't work on my (retina) iPad. Just did a huge long list of forums on the left hand side.

Personally I tend to prefer "full site" mode on the iPad anyway as Safari's designed around viewing normal sites and the mobile-ised versions tend to be a bit wonky.

Main worry is wether it'll remember that I've selected full site next time I'm back (couple of other sites I visit didn't for a while). Also may be worth setting it to full site mode by default until a user selects mobile.

just about all the mobile theme is on the index is a list of the boards, so it did work just fine.

it would take more work to disable it by default then have it enabled by default. but it should remember your selection until you log out.

So that's why I got the blue screen at 14:32 today you were testing it!

I use a mark one iPad and with the addition of the previous/next page facility find the old Forum format works very well.

All though I have an Android smart phone my fat fingers cause havoc so I shan't be using it to view the forum but havinghsaid that I can see a lot of members finding it very useful.

It is a little different to the Safari version when seen on the I-pad, but it is really good. Well done to the developer.

Just by chance I've upgraded my Blackberry Curve to a Bold 9790 today ;D

(don't do these humungous touch-screen thingies - I'd be forever cleaning the finger-marks off the screen  :smiley-laughing: )

Had a nosey at the new mobile format - cool  8)

Obviously the mobile version is a cut down version and IMHO it has been well done. I have found most things, but can't find how to give a "thank you". Is it well hidden?

that mod is not available with the mobile theme along with several of the other mods that are installed on the forum. if you wish to thank someone you will need to use the full theme.

Hi
Is the new mobile format only for Android phones? It doesn't work on mine. I can only get the standard version on my Nokia E71 and of course I have to scroll sideways, backways, etcways to read it. That's fine, I'm used to doing it, but the new mobile-friendly version would be nice.

That happened to me as well and I have an Android Samsung Galaxy Ace. But if you scroll to the bottom of the front page, and press the word 'mobile' it'll take you to the mobile site.

Cheers

Neal

Yes, most phones will auto-switch to the mobile version, but as Neal says, some users may have to click the 'mobile' button on the bottom of the forum.

Ok guys, I've just done that. (That very second!) At first I was thinking 'still no go' But I think it is working. It doesn't look like the picture, that's all. Hang on... hey realtime commentary here.... yeah, I think it is working. The heading says "NGF mobile" and when I click on a topic or reply it is coming up with readable - without - scanning - sideways stuff. Cool! I think the problem is my outdated phone, but I like the 'real' keyboard.

Well done fellas... this forum gets better & better.

By the way, those iPhones and the rest of them have SMD accelerometers in 'em! Hence you can flip 'em around, etc. A Physics teacher I know recently wrote an article about taking kids to the amusement park and getting them on a rollercoaster to use the accelerometer on their phones to determine the value of g!!

Makes one wonder if you can actually ring anyone up on these things. Ah well, one of these days I might get excited about DCC..... ;D

Thank you very much for doing this, it's great to know that the management listen.

Works a treat on my iPad and my Android phone... again thank you.

Techie Team,

I've deliberately left it a few days before commenting on the Mobile site, just to see how it settles in, but I have to say it's very good.

Only criticism is about the block blue colours. Can I suggest that the Topic only be blocked in when an update to that Topic has been made??

And thats about it really, everything else is pretty straight forward, although I had to read the posts on here to find the 'Show Unread Posts' link was, as I was getting a bit frustrated trying to find it and really throwing my toys out the pram, moaning about the site  :smiley-laughing: :smiley-laughing: but now I know where it is, everything is cool again  ;D ;D

Cheers

Neal.

Hi Neal, the app was one that we actually had to purchase and was coded by an independent programmer, illori may know if there are any alternatives available to what you are seeing that can be utilised.  Obviously we try to get best value out of any improvements we look to make as we are aware that it is, in part, funded by members donations and decisions to spend money are not taken lightly, but if it improves the forum for members we do give it serious consideration.

I think the OP is referring to the main boards being white and the sub boards being blue, however the option to "read new posts" should help that.  Certainly when you scroll down through the Knowledge Bank, for example, you get a lot of blue as there are so many sub boards.

Neal, you will just have to like blue a bit more  ;)  :smiley-laughing: :smiley-laughing:

Background colour to that response, perhaps? Just tryin' to help?!

Ok just saw latest. Blue, blue electric blue...

On my 'old' Nokia E71 it all comes up white background anyway.

:P

if it would help we could just remove the child/sub boards from the index on the mobile theme, then you can only view them from inside the parent board.

Like the flag counter! And also just checked out a London 2012 clip with the torch on the North York Moors Railway. Cool! Also on same clip the Scout guy proposing to his girlfriend.... ah, well. Can't win 'em all. Nah, good on him. :-\

Ok I'm getting in the way of some serious discussion here. I'll bow out.

Love it.
I had difficulty in viewing it before on my HCT Wildfire.
This is perfect.
My only niggle is that I really enjoy looking at the recent posts on the main site. Have I missed it on the mobile version or has it been omitted?

If I was sure that I knew what I was talking about, I'd support this- there's a lot of scrolling to get to the end of the knowledge base on the mobile version, as each letter takes up a whole line. Same would be true for other parent/child arrangements as the family grows and becomes unruly.
Otherwise, top marks, and many thanks.
I mostly view via mobile phone, so this helps enormously.
