0-4-0 locos in n gauge?

Hello All, I'm fairly new to n gauge and seem to be having trouble locating any 0-4-0 shunting type locos. 
- Is it the case that they never went into production - perhaps because of issues running such small chassis on small gauge points or some other reason?
- Are there any models generally available or is my only option to purchasing a kit?

They are somewhat thin on the ground. There aren't any in UK outline ready to run (RTR) but there has been a Fleischmann 0-4-0 produced that you might be able to pickup on eBay. There are quite a few chassis available now that you can put a kit body on (3D printed ones being quite popular) as well as the option of removing the centre wheels from the Minitrix T3/Dock Tank chassis as per the ones @maridunian has made elsewhere on this forum. As far as I know the only RTR 0-4-0 that is available now is from Kato .

Looks very German to me but maybe it might be of use.

Edit: this is not an option, two others mentioned below that the motor is in one of the coaches!

There have been a few    Some have dropped out of production now, I suspect mainly due to changes in motor availability and also lack of space for DCC decoders    They can still be found on ebay and other second-hand sources.

Of the examples I own, the two oldest are probably the Arnold and Fleischmann 0-4-0Ts, both date from the early 70s. Both have been very popular for use as chassis for British loco body kits in both N and 009.  Neither are in production at the moment.

Arnold (and later Fleischmann) have made short steeplecab electic locos. Kato make a longer steeplecab.

There are other larger/longer 0-4-0 diesels by Minitrix, Lima (which was rubbish) and probably others.

So... it depends what it is you're looking for exactly?

I've got one of these and honestly it's probably my best performing loco.

The steam train mentioned above actually has the motor in the coach, so the loco won't move on it's own.

That Kato is without motor. The motor is in one of the passenger wagons.

Hi - I've been very frustrated that as @ntpntpntp describes we are much worse served with small locos than we were 30 years ago.

As @zwilnik kindly mentions I've taken to designing 3D printed bodies for various available chasses (including some built to order by N-Drive Productions).

I've also designed some UK-outline wagon, coach and loco bodies for the Kato Pocketline 0-4-0 steam set and several diesel bodyshells for the Kato Electric loco/tram chassis, which can be purchased separately (Kato 11-109/11-110).

Peco white metal kit SR B4 class dock tank on Arnold chassis, will also fit similar Fleischmann chassis with a bit of hacking, not tried it on any other chassis. Probably no longer in production, so keep looking on Ebay.

@Dorsetmike  Yes, I mentioned the Arnold chassis in my earlier reply.  I'm not sure when production ceased (Spurweite-n database reckons 1992) but they aren't available new at the moment. No idea if they'll come back.

I've not seen the Peco/Wills loco body kits available new for a long time, again I don't know when they ceased.

I notice yours is missing the upper slidebar and linkage, it's a separate part that's often lost.  I drew up a 3D print for spares

I really like your 3D models Mike but I will never again do business with Shapeways, as they just produce junk and are way too expensive. I only print my own items these days. I know you have said before that you don't want to sell the files...is this still the same??? Still hoping one day to be able to print one of your models.
