I wouldn't worry to much about the uncoupling lack unless you are planning to do shunting. Unexpected uncoupling is not what you want however. As for the wheels, can you try swapping your Atlas wheels into the new trucks to see if they work any better?

How bad can these cheapo trucks be?

Anyone any experience of them? I may just take a punt.

Certainly not from the MT production line which is in the USA. These would most likely be cheap Chinese knock-offs.

As for medium and long shank couplers, these tend to be for 60-foot plus prototypes, boxcars, auotracks, centerbeams etc. I fit short shank to anything 50-foot and under in my collection.

I guessed those cheap trucks might be EveModel and I was correct :)   I've had a couple of European style wagons from EveModel and the quality is ok for the price.

Long shank Rapido couplers exist too, mostly seen on old long wheelbase 4 wheel freight wagons to allow extra sideways swing for tight curves, in the days before KK mechanisms came along. I have some old Arnold and Roco wagons with really long shank coupling.
